Why I think Galio's VGU Pod should rework Mordekaiser

Malicious Metal··58 votes·3,655 views

So, with Reav3 already stating that they haven't really nailed down who the Evelynn team is going to rework after they finish up the Widowmaker I decided to talk a little bit about why they should be doing Mordekaiser. Besides him actually needing a VGU anyways.

I personally feel Warwick/Urgot's team would be more suited to do someone like Swain, who I really think should be their next project, but this isn't about Swain, this is about Mordekaiser.

Before we get into reasons WHY Mordekaiser should be reworked by them let's take a walk down memory lane:

#Past Projects:

https://www2.pic-upload.de/img/33305862/Yorick_VU_splash_concept_02.gif Yorick, the Shepard of Lost Souls Disregard my 27% ranked win rate with Yorick for the time being.

Yorick was the first rework I really thought marked the beginning of a new era of VGU's, him having come dangerously close to dethroning Sion as THE VGU in my eyes.

They took an underplayed champion with almost no real backstory and thematic appeal and just improved on it. And that's coming from someone who really enjoyed old Yorick (Running down carries with your cancerous ghouls was one of the most fun experiences I had playing). Yorick is a huge success, they embraced the cool things about a "good guy" having to do "bad things" for his mission. Yet he retains the appeal of old Yorick, matched with awesome thematic cohesion between kit and lore.

His kit in itself is ingenious. Everything serves a purpose and it all flows really well, while still retaining the heavy feel. This is something that's going to be important throughout this thread. Yorick feels heavy and lumbering but he never feels clunky, besides the AI, which is supposed to be like that anyways.

https://media.giphy.com/media/LBoph3JFWyYIU/giphy.gif Galio, the Colossus I thought nothing would ever beat Sion...

But they prove me wrong. Galio is, in my opinion, the best VGU to this point. And I know some oldschool Galio mains will disagree with this notion, but it's the same shtick with old Sion.

New Galio is awesome. His theme perfectly translates into the game. You just feel like a Colossal Symbol of Justice! Galio's character, be it VO, looks or simply his theme, never feels out of place and is reflected on his gameplay.

And just like Yorick his KIT feels HEAVY and SATISFYING to use.

#How does Mordekaiser fit into all of this?

Unlike Warwick's team, I feel Mordekaiser is more in line with what the Galio Pod is known for. They've tackled a lot of champions with huge game-health issues (Yorick, Galio and now Evelynn) while not only retaining their old appeal but building on that.

Most of their old traits can be found in their theme/character but they've got so much more to show for. And this is what Mordekaiser suffers from. He's just Sauron 2.0 with some metal gags attached to it. He needs More in terms of character and theme in order to truly be a great character. He has the potential to be one of the coolest champions in the game but he's held back by being a Metal sterotype with a very basic "Death knight" archetype.

But it the main selling point here is his Kit. Galio's team has never ceased to amaze me when it came to translating character into gameplay.

And they've got a track record of Heavy, Juggernaut(y) champions.

Mordekaiser needs to feel HEAVY and SATISFYING like Galio and Yorick, both still having pretty basic kits but you really feel the weight of their spells without them being clunky, not in the slightest.

Besides; Juggernauts, Heavy Champions and total Badasses seem to be their forte.

And this is exactly what Mordekaiser should be.

Honestly, this thread doesn't really serve a real purpose other than to vent my hype over the next few VGU's being unveiled and me just really loving the direction the past few updates went for.

VGU's are, in my opinion, the thing I look forward the most.

No new champion has ever captured my attention as much as a VGU and my most played champions to this point have all received a VGU. Except Mordekaiser.

Anyways, I'm looking forward for the next VGU, can't wait what they do to that disgusting abomination of a champion that is the Urgod.

Mordekaiser getting the same heavy feel as Galio and Yorick would be perfect. That kind of "inexorable walking instrument of death" could use some emphasis when they give him an update.

You don't want them to rework Morde because they will eliminate a lot of his gameplay styles. Like, almost all of it.

The Yorick rework is a failure and a success. It fails to capture the gameplay of the old Yorick, but it succeeded because the result was good. It's almost like an entirely new champ being created and replacing the one before it.

Same with Galio, and Sion.

If they do this to Morde, he'll be completely different. Heck, they might even get rid of his ulti

Malicious Metal10 votes

Implying that's a bad thing.

Most of these reworked champions are inherently flawed and they had to lose a lot of their "unique" mechanics because they weren't healthy for the game.

I agree he needs a vgu. I still think class updates for champions not necessarily in need of a full vgu but of some love still have potential. Despite the flak they receive, the class updates usually have a gem that riot can look back on and say "we did that one well."

Juggernauts had Darius who was fairly well received (except by low elo who are destined to hate him forever, oh well) Mages had Vladimir who went through some rough patches, but is now sitting at a very fine spot if you ask me Tanks had Sejuani who, if you look past the retarded numbers riot put on her kit, is actually decent in terms of design

That's not to downplay some of the crap they did.

Juggernauts saw near irreparable damage to Mordekaiser and Skarner (who apparently is not even a juggernaut anymore...) Mages had Malzahar nuff said Tanks had Maokai which was an absolute disaster and will probably be seen as the worst update in the class

But I still believe in class updates, the idea is sound, it's just the execution. If only the execution could be as well done as some of the recent VGUs.

As a bronze 1 toplainer I have to admit that I hated Darius more than anything in the world, but I am fine with him now...

... with the 10 ban system Riot removed him from the game xD

With how good that rework team is at retaining a champion's theme and showing it in their kit, should they rework Tryndamere too? Solidify him as a barbarian who doesn't back down, instead of his "I'm gonna take your tower then run away" playstyle.

Arcyyy2 votes

@Malicious Metal, what should they keep and reflect on in his new kit? Similar to how they kept ghouls with yorick, supress with ww, and taunt with galio, what ability should they keep above all others?

Malicious Metal11 votes

As much as I'm attached to Shielding being his primary source of survivability I think his Soul-enslavement is the one thing that should remain in one way or the other. It's thematically fitting for an Ironclad Tyrant to rip out the souls of his enemies and use force them to obey his will.

I'd be more than happy if they'd also keep him being the shielding Juggernaut but that's just a minor detail.

If they were to replace his passive, suggestion based on 20 seconds of thought:

Passive: Moulding metal

His damage changes based on the most recent damage he just took from a champion, excluding true damage. 5-10 second cooldown between checking.

Thus when you hit him he kinda throws it straight back and continues to stroll intimidatingly towards you.

This could be changed in that his mr or armour adapts if you view beef as a more fitting trait.

Sounds like it'd have Irelia syndrome - if he gets ahead, he already defeats you via statcheck, and if you get ahead, he just does more damage.

TheSingularity1 votes

It doesn't give him more damage. It changes what type of damage he does.

It isn't w/e spell he uses+additional damage type X It is what would be a magic damage dealing spell is now a physical damage dealing spell.

If he gets ahead he can be shut down by getting a support to use a magic dmg spell on him then having your AD focus him (if he gets def stats) or getting a tank to keep him occupied (if he changed to magic dmg)

underscores2224 votes

That can really mess with his pen options though - if he gets void or whisper (for example) it could become useless because he gets hit once by an auto or random spell.

TheSingularity1 votes

While this is a notable downside.

It seems reasonable. As otherwise there'd be absolutely no downside to what can be a very strong passive. As you basically force them to itemise against their own dmg output. If you get fed and roam, chances are they won't have itemised accordingly.

But as I said, that is a notable disadvantage to build options. What would be your thoughts on defensive steroid based on what hits him instead? ADC hits him he gains armour mage hits him he gets MR

Sorry, this got rather rambley as it's gotten somewhat late here and I've been typing it while playing a game of league (in 10-30 second intervals as I die) so it's somewhat incoherent even after being edited after the match.

I do rather like (or dislike if I'm against him) his current passive - aside from being unique, it feels undeadish and unstoppable when not gamebreakingly overbearing balanced (which is hard). Thematically, it feels necromatic, which is kinda his (lore) theme. He hurts you and heals himself without feeling like a drain tank or falling into the pitfalls directly associated with that (hard countered by grevious wounds). Flip side - if he builds gunblade he basically gets "double healing" out of his abilities, but they cost health.

While I agree that his shield isn't what makes Morde Morde, it is very unique and fits his niche/role/theme fairly well. The question then becomes, what is he giving up (in terms of power) to have the shield passive if it is kept in some manner through the update? Will a new passive open the door for new interactions that aren't just "don't get hit with his abilities?" The answer to that, of course, is probably - but he is technically a juggernaut and "don't get hit with his abilities" is part of the counter to that entire class in one form or another.

Morde has two themes - his "real" or lore theme of necromatic undead suit of armor and his "joke" theme of metal. If done right, you can hit the necromatic undead armor theme and tie metal into it easily enough. So in terms of necromacy, we have an undead guy (that won't change) who can enslave souls (his R). His shield translates easily enough to necromatic energy hitting you shields/heals/sustains him, which makes sense. You could say that he is stealing bits of soul or life essence to shield himself when he hits things.

A new passive might make some use of that in a less straightforward way (when he kills or assists on killing a unit, he gets a decaying shield for their max HP for 4 seconds or something silly like that) but one of the reasons his abilities cost health is due to the current shielding passive. Removing it opens the door to questions regarding his health costs, secondary bar (should he go to mana? No resource?). Additionally, unlike the other health-cost champs, he has traditionally had no way to heal himself easily. His W got a heal tacked on with the juggernaut update, but before that he relied on Will or Gunblade to offset his health costs. Should that change - either giving him an easier way to sustain the costs of his abilities or changing what his abilities' costs are?

TheSingularity1 votes

Can see where you coming from now, especially where you're coming from thematically. My suggestion fits more of a zac/camille hybrid where they absorb what hits em and adapt. Far from something that sounds like morde. AND! don't worry about rambling. I do it all the time <3

.

I was coming from your position of "dislike when against" and love when not. Correct me if I'm wrong here (I haven't played morde for a while and last time I did this is how it appeared to work). While he didn't have a heal pre jug (when I played him to counter fizz. OMFG IT WAS GLORIOUS!), he off set his health costs with his passive. Once he got rolling at level 3 (for me it was endless spam), your shield would eat the health costs and regain more than was depleted. He became, as I said correct me if I'm wrong as this all memory, what was essentially mana less.

Perhaps allowing morde to damage his own minions with his W and heal of that? It would hinder his push but emphasise the theme kinda. ish. idk spur of the moment thinking.

underscores2221 votes

I believe his heath costs always came out of his health.

The issue with damaging/killing your own minions (like GP used to do) is that it denies the kill gold and xp to the enemy, even if you don't get it. It was fairly unfun to deal with.

true, espesh if they can't respond by doing the same

Ooooh I thought you meant he did more damage depending how much damage you gave to him.

I see, sorry.

If given the choice between one or the other I agree. Ult is More Thematically important and should be the Window of Power that Strikes terror into EVERY champion hence why I want to add "grounded" to his ultimate so even hyper Mobile champions will Fear for their soul

Ýones2 votes

Having a point & click ability that makes enemies grounded and deals damage over 10 seconds would have way too many balance and would have no counterplay at all.

Mordepool1 votes

That's not how I would like it implemented. The Ult would curse the target and AA/empowered Q'S would trigger the curse(grounding the target for 1 second). I have made threads about it i Don't assume you read them

I've been playing mordekaiser a bit. Any advice? people say he's a juggernaut, but i always get blown up. Are you suppose to be tanky or rely on shields from doing dmg?

Malicious Metal3 votes

Unlike Juggernauts who get a lot of worth building tanky and don't really need a lot of damage items Mordekaiser should invest in a lot of offense.

His durability scales off his damage output and stacking damage items is usually the best way to build him. try something like this; item 3116 item 3151 item 3146 item 3053 item 3135

Maybe a bit tankier if you're new to Mord.

I've always been curious, how to properly, and I mean properly build Mordekaiser. would a ga, stone plate or other defensive item work for the last item?

Malicious Metal3 votes

Stoneplate is soooo counter intuitive to Morde's design. You WANT to deal damage.

GA isn't that great anymore due to it being more of an AD item. DMP and SV do work well though.

mr Boombastic7871 votes

I've seen alot of different toplaners and juggernauts in the recent patch build item 3078 and then item 3053 with alot of succés, I am thinking about trying it out on Morde too since I feel like it would work well with his kit. Any thoughts?

Galiö1 votes

Give old Galio new Galios Q and he would have been 100x stronger than the new Galio. People just lame and didn't play balanced slower paced champs. I think morde is OK the way he is. He is string bright now and kept weaker cause he'd be OP with number buffs just like how Old yorick was OK with number buffs. Yorick had an unhealthy kit and needed some rework cause you weren't allowed to touch it. Morde is similar right now and may just need a reksai level rework. Galio was great just underplayed and had a tiny bit of mana issues and CD issues.

Malicious Metal7 votes

Just saying Morde only needs a Rek'sai level rework is wrong.

Morde's kit is inherently flawed and never allowed to be good because it would severely impact game health.

That's not true at all. He is just hard to balance for 'bad' players (d5 and below) he has the same general weaknesses are a Darius or swain where if people don't pile on him or stay close during a heal he is kind of useless. If they balance a spell a way to make him not so strong when everyone is piled but not so useless when everyone is far he'd be ok to tweak numbers.

Malicious Metal2 votes

Now I understand why you were so upset about Galio's rework. You just can't be fucked to see unhealthy mechanics and binary gameplay for what they are.

Wyrmblade1 votes

Hopefully they don't do the massive personality changes they did to Galio.

Ýones1 votes

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but when Mordekaiser gets his VGU I'd like to see him back in the botlane.

Botlane Mordekaiser was one of my most fun game-breaking Metas I've tried and I really want to play him as a juggernaut in the botlane again, but he is just not very viable in there anymore. He was legit my instalock when I ever got to be an ADC/in the botlane.

I do agree he could be way more like Sauron and way less a heavy metal punnist (is that even a term?)

I feel like the way Morde plays now, the only thing about him that even hints at that gravity and presence in game is how satisfying his third Q is.

The rest of him feels like the bad kind of clunky, the slow "this doesn't really feel right" kind of clunky.

hum... let me see, every time i hear mordekaiser I remember one guy and Digimon. that said, this should be the solo source for inspiration on the mordekaiser rework: http://www.badassoftheweek.com/heemeyer.jpg http://www.badassoftheweek.com/heemeyer.html

the site of course, but i like that history, sound like mordekaiser in a Alternative Universe.
