RIOT: Give Skarner a slight buff to make him viable for his new legendary skin!

Yoella··17 votes·2,398 views

Skarner Skarner is a champion who hasn't seen much playtime for a while. He's sad and he's lonely, he misses his kind. He told me so! I think that the main issue with Skarner is that he's a horrible fighter and a sub-par tank. With other fighters doing much more damage, other tanks being much more durable, and Skarner not really fulfilling either role successfully, he has dropped in popularity and usage.

Riot, the new Battlecast Alpha Skarner skin looks amazing, and I would hate to see its popularity and sales plummet because it's on a suffering champion.

Here is what I feel is what's making Skarner so inferior to others.

  1. His Q. His Q does mixed damage in a (very) small area around himself and applies a nice movement and AS buff after hitting an opponent. However, for a Skarner going Fighter the ratios are much too small (40% AD and, 20% AP after the first strike) and the base damage 18 / 28 / 38 / 48 / 58, and 18 / 28 / 38 / 48 / 58 after the first strike is much too little. Whereas for a Skarner going Tank it's still inferior to what other tanks can deal, such as Rammus. To fix this increase the base damage, or the ratios.

  2. His E, fracture, is his only ranged attack and it has some big issues. First of all, the CD (a constant 12) feels a little on the high side for champions these days. Maybe scale it 16 / 14 / 12 / 10 / 8. Not only is the projectile tiny as hell, it also moves slowly for a skillshot projectile. This makes it often hard to land and over-punishing if you miss. Not to mention a 40% AP ratio makes it exceptionally underwhelming compared to tanks such as Sejuani who have a 1000 range AoE slow on a lower CD that deals more damage. This fix is simple, speed up the projectile and increase ratios slightly.

  3. Up his movement speed. At 345 Skarner definitely isn't slow, but in the age of leaps and jumps and dashes and teleport abilities Skarner can't even hope to catch up to someone that isn't right next to him. Even with his bonus speed from W. Considering he's nearly an exclusively melee champion who's abilities all rely on him being right up on his target, his ability to catch up to said target is very underwhelming. I mean the guy has six legs!

  4. His ultimate is his signature ability and there's only one thing wrong with it. It doesn't feel like a true suppression. When you ulti them Garen and Wukong still spin, Rammus still shockwaves, etc. This makes it very difficult to drag said opponent away from your dying teammate, and makes you take considerably more damage while using your own ultimate. That just doesn't make sense. The guys are crystallized, how can they still be using an ability like that? Either make it stop abilities like that, or give Skarner bonus Armor and MR while dragging an enemy.

If you address at least the first two of these four things I'm certain Skarner will see the light of the rift once again en masse, and your skin sales will increase greatly. (After all, why go through the effort of making a cool skin if you can't maximize profit from it?)

Skarner is the Jack of all trades but master of none when it comes to jungles. You can build him tanky or damage heavy and still perform both roles. I'd like more base armour or health on him though because of the new jungle monsters being tougher. Plus you can't forget his game changing ult (get the adc the fight is won for your team).

I feel Skarner is unpopular because as you pointed out he doesn't really excel at any particular juggling aspect. Jarvan is a better tank, Warwick has more sustain, Lee sin and Kha'zix for mobility plus a Good Maokai can provide more cc. Unfortunately for Skarner he has no dash, uses lots of mana, and needs those 3 stacks to have any hard cc.

He's just currently un-favoured in both the Meta and the way the jungle is structured which sucks cause I loved playing him in Season2 before the rework.

Skarner is the Jack of all trades but master of none

That's actually the perfect way to describe Skarner right now.

Yeah, on the reasons i truly like Skarner, is because of his versatility. He can take the maximum potential from lots of items. However, as You stated before, there are champions that do his job better. @op, the thing i truly love of Skarner is to stalk and running after the enemy, and feels so rewarding when i finally get to stun them after a long chase. However, his constant damage is nothing to really worry about unless Skarner got at least a sheen upgrade, then it becomes "OK". That being said: i agree on buffing his base ms; buffing a bit is Q damage; as i was a big fan of AP Skarner, i rather see his E as a tool to get close to the enemies, than a damage skill. Due to it being just a long cooldown, slow traveling, and mana intensive slow, i think lowering Es mana costs is a reasonable change; and, if there's more room for improvement: increase its travel speed; Increase the slow duration; the R is fine to me, the examples You mentione are bugs to me. Stuffs like those happened to me too (getting damaged from a suppressed spinning wukong, or being stunned after suppressing a jumping pantheon in mid-air) and shouldn't happen, as those guys are suppressed. And that's all for now, as a reference, i've been playing Skarner almost everytime since the end of 2013. Sorry for my bad English =) Edit 1: removing cast time on his E would be another reasonable buff indeed

Option 5: Lower the crippling mana addiction. If I could just get in a fight and not have to go back home to stop the mana shakes, I'd be able to do so much more.

Other than that, making the E less slow and narrow would be wonderful.

Not to mention, his E might as well zero damage- people who get hit with it just feel a slight tickle. I'm not asking for it to be his main source of damage, but I don't think an increase in even just the base damage would be too much to ask for.

Skarner would be great right now if it weren't for the huge game-breaking bug on his ult:

HE CAN'T ULT SOMEONE WITH GUARDIAN ANGEL - it's like QSS, it just cancels. They just have to own GA, not trigger it by dying.

Skarner is really underwhelming. I feel like he lost a lot of power for more "disruption". They wanted to make him a tank, so they gutted his damage. Amumu and sejuani have better cc/disruption, better damage and better initiation. His main damage ability has a measly 58 base damage with 0.4 bonus ad ratio... combined with his magic damage that's 116 base damage with a 0.4 bonus ad and 0.2 ap ratio. That's incredibly low. Why play skarner when you can play hecarim. Hecarim has a 200 base damage q that can be spammed as well. His w gives him a good amount of survivability compared to skarner. His speed boost is much better and doesn't disappear if you damage him unlike skarner and his ult is an amazing initiation tool. Oh and his passive is way cooler. The bug needs some love. Make him a tanky, disruptive fighter that doesn't tickle people.

I completely disagree. Been playing him more frequently than usually lately, and just building a Stalker's blade with Warrior, a triforce and a maw for damage, I've been able to do the most damage to champions in numerous games. He is just really heavily build dependent. I find him fine where he is at right now. And his Q is nice where it is because of how often you can activate a sheen with it. I don't know where he was before all those nerfs a while ago since I didn't own him back then, but I feel as though he is really fun and still can carry games if built right.item 3078

Skarner is mostly fine. His passive takes people by surprise easily and his Q isn't meant for straight up damage, but a mix of AS, MS his passive and obviously regular damage. He can't burst people and that's why he suffers a lot in lane, but in a sustained fight, I found myself out trading many champs with the use of TF or IBG because Skarner is the best user of sheen effects in the game (highest base AD). Having max cooldowns mixed with a little bit of tankiness and attack speed make him pretty terrifying to fight against.

If I had to change anything about Skarner though, it would be to give him a shield when he ults just to make it a tad easier to survive reaching a squishy in the backline and bringing him back without dying since Skarner doesn't have a gap closer.

shield on ult would be an awesome idea

You can shield while you ult....

WeihGuy1 votes

Yes but if you attempt to pull someone from the backline, itll most likely be gone by then and you lose all your movement speed that actually makes it easier to pull them back to the front line

Vellich0r1 votes

ive played enough skarner to know that, that doesnt change that if you used it to go in, you wont have it to get out.

What if we gave him an amumu passive for damage? His Q does a fixed amount of max hp per hit? 3/4/5/6/7 percent of max health per hit? For having low base damage, i feel like this will help supplement his damage, but take away the ratios.

Also, why not give him a slight armor and mr buff on his W? It makes sense that creating a shield from his exoskeleton should also imply the ability to harden his defenses.

I really, really hate his E. So slow and narrow. Very predictable and easy to dodge. I would much rather have it like a minor aoe explosion that slows everyone with range. Of course, it will have a much shorter radius. This way, he can just dash in with W, slow them down with E, then do damage with Q.

no thx I like unpopular status <3

No. Every skarner i see literally single handedly goes 100-0-100 and carries the game.

I actually think Skarner is in a decent position right now, and he can survive the jungle fairly well. He just needs some small buffs in order to bring out what he excels at (constant sticking power). Nothing too big, just small things like:

Q - Base Damage increase on Q for the physical and magic damage (25/40/55/70/85 would be nice, since it was that way before 4.10).

W - Remove the ramp up on the speed buff, separate shield buff from speed buff (so if the shield goes down, Skarner still goes fast).

E - Remove cast time.

I think these all support his strength as a champion with strong sticking power that deals his damage over a long period of time, who also does not have instant gap closers (outside of flash) available to him.

Yoella1 votes

I agree wholly on the Q, but I feel like the W is actually fine where it is. It has a nice 80% AP ratio with a decent base. It's his best ability IMO.

All of Skarners issues can be summed up in two points:

  1. Absolutely awful Q damage
  2. Lack of any powerful gap closer (outside of flash, which everyone has)

Again, as I stated in the original posting, in the age where nearly every champion either has a leap, dash, or teleport as part of their kit, and those who don't have flash instead, Skarner suffers greatly.

He just needs some method to get close to an opponent if they dash or jump away. Either that or he needs Q damage amplified so that the challenge is more worth the reward.

Messaiga1 votes

Yeah, I kinda felt like the things of his W could be over-the-top, but it would make him feel so damn fluid. I do agree he has trouble getting close to people, and nowadays he doesn't even pack enough damage to make the challenge worth it. Sad thing is, they attempted to pack all his damage into his Ultimate from the looks of it (3 passive stacks on target = 700 Maximum Magic Damage on Impale). Burst just ain't Skarner's thing and I hope they realize that.

I've been playing a lot of Skarner in the new jungle and I actually think he's in a pretty good spot. The problem with Skarner is how item dependent he is. Recent jungle changes helped him out, as before his best clearing item was lizard, then he would have to get a sheen into a gauntlet, then boots of swiftness(with alacrity, NaSkarner OP). To build all those items, which were all core in my opinion, took too much gold before you could start building bulk.

With the new Juggernaut jungle item, he has a better option for clearing while being tanky and gaining tenacity. Getting to a high priority target and sticking to them was the reason swifties were important before, but the new Righteous Glory accomplishes this very well, also giving him the stats he loves along with the catalyst passive. With this patch his core items (my opinion) went from elder lizard, gauntlet, swifties, to juggernaut, gauntlet, righteous glory. So overall the new items allow him to be bulkier while still having the speed/utility he needs.

If you do, however still want to buff him, there is one way I can think of. Nerf his base ad. Why? Just look at his kit, he works absurdly well with spellblade with highly spammable spells with the highest lvl 18 ad in the game, making him balanced around that. Nerfing his base ad could shift some of that power into his actual skills.

Skarner is more pick/ban reliant. He needs good bans and picks. He can be fierce. He is an off tank imo. You can build him tanky but if you build no sort of damage item or extra sticking power to mobile units he can easily get kited if the fight goes on to long due to his mana issues.

with the new item I get item 3713 , it helps restores his Mana and HP in the jungle and faster clear added to his already fast clear(somewhat). Now depending on your laners match-up your gona either want to get a item 3024 if the team had a good amount of ad. It gives him cdr and helps gives mana and small armor.
item 3211 If there is alot of ap instead and I mean alot. item 3025 slow passive used to be built in Skarners kit(somewhat) but they changed him, it Generally should be his 1st item fully built. You shouldnt rushitem 3725 1st unless they have heavy cc and you are losing. You need item 3025 quickly only get item 3078 if your team is snowballing and your team has some sort of decent cc to help you stick. Your're gona need item 1001 but that can vary on the enemy team and your comp. item 3009 can be good against slows.

If they have a lot of auto attackers get item 3047 , Don't get item 3158
You need something to be able to get in to use your abilities or take some sort of damage. Skarner q is already low cd if he hits with an auto attack. 15% wont make a huge difference early on for cdr. Chances are your gona be low on mana, If you already had a fight to make it worth cdr for his ult/others skills. CDR on Skarner isn't something you should be rushing for. Its not bad to have it but you ain't gota have it. Next get depending on the enemy team comp which you get 1st, item 3143 or item 3102 ,

but I often get item 3065 instead of item 3102 for the cdr and Lifesteal/etc. If they lack a lot of cc I don't need the spell shield and it helps as I run 3.0 life steal quints and 3 points in Vampirism which helps keeps me in the fight a lot longer. This is entirely up to you. This is my niche pick Champion to be honest. I play him a lot but in a slightly different way as opposed to how most people would play him. Skarner having 6.0 Life steal Early on with 3.0 Spell vamp helps me stay healthier. Smiting minions can change a fight too.

for the last item it depends on your team and what you go against and how you are fairing in your game. Use the best judgment you can make. Is the adc being problematic? Get item 3075 if not you can get item 3068 or even item 3110 , is the enemy team doing too well and ad/ap is steady get item 3026

unless your trying to be a bad ass get item 3091 or some other item like item 3153 or item 3072 or item 3074 . I believe you should get another Tank Champion with Skarner to provide more peel and cc with your team as he works best with in case he fails. You can also use a good initiator.

Skarner is fine he doesn't need a buff. If he does his E needs a bit more damage as it is way to weak in damage yeah it has a great slow if you nail it. This is all just my opinion though. Skarner can be built more ways than 1. But he never performs the Best tank option or best damage option. He seems to provide a bit of both. If you want to go all tank or all damage there are better options to pick. The best way for Skarner to win is not let the enemy team get full build, cause no matter what he won't be able to tank it all if He goes in 1st to do any sort of damage or cc. As his cc besides his ult take time to use during a fight. Never pick Skarner in to a Morgana , Even be wary ofLux . If you do whether its ranked or normals you may need to get item 3140 which eventually upgrading it to item 3139

Janna can be a hassle also.Udyr late game is to much of an hassle for Skarner . He will easily solo you mid or late especially if you chase if your not ahead by a lot Works good with Morgana Braum Sona and other game changing cc champs.

Make his W an actual speed boost and give the shield a max health scaling

I remember when his Q actually did DAMAGE and along with a sheen it was just so good... I hate how they took that part away. Also the slow was so nice and the new attack speed buff doesn't do much.
