When would I pick Nocturne over Yi?

I play both with Devourer and farm till 6. I build both bruiser and neither is really tanky. I'm kind of unsure vs what junglers I should pick one or the other as they seem a bit similar and are both very AA focused. Nocturne's ult. is obviously very different so I know that he's better vs squishy immobile targets with high range but Yi is also good vs squishy and immobile teams and his Q serves a similar function to Nocturne's spellshield.

Pick nocturne when you want to feel useless.

Never, Tank Yi is broken beyond belief, abuse the free elo while you can.

Is it really that simple? :(

Or when to pick Jax over Yi?

wheny you have a good pick comp, mabye with aditional globals like TF, or if you want to protect an snowbally laner with great counterganks, and if your team prefers chatic fights. The vision denial of his ult has far more impact than one might think, and the long range ult for picks/counterganks is quite nice, though to really utilze that it's best to be a coordinated premate team. For soloQ, yi probably is always the better choice

Noc goes in from longer range and has higher burst damage but lower sustained damage. This gives him easier access to isolated targets during the early and midgame, and lets him skip straight past frontlines in the lategame without having to position for a flank. He has higher overall burst damage but lower sustained damage. Generally you should be going Warrior and heavy AD itemization to facilitate his kit, as opposed to AS items like you'd build on Yi.

Tank Yi is a massive threat at the moment, but Nocturne definitely isn't simply a lesser version of Yi. He has his own set of intricacies, strengths, and weaknesses.

There's definitely a place for this champion, despite what other people in this thread are saying. He's my absolute favorite jungle pick into champions like Soraka, Lux, Twisted Fate, and Kalista. High priority squishies that have no real way of escaping his long-range nuke potential, due to his spellshield.

Ok I apologize I KNOW nocturne can be good. just bad personal experiences of dominating lane/early then just losing horribly later. Good luck with your noc games :)

Sick Nocturne winrate. I tried full AD Nocturne myself but the reason I went with Devourer was mainly because for only a 2 damage item build like Devourer-BoRK, it is more effective and I played him bruiser. I didn't like full AD as much is because of how tricky it is and how well you have to know exactly what you can go for. It doesn't leave much room for error.

What do you think of Duskblade on him? It actually feels a bit overkill to me but I was fed when I tried it. Also, what are your opinions on the Sterak's Gage 20% HP nerf? I thought this was pretty core on Nocturne since he's going to get focused down when he ults. a carry and something like GA is useless on him because you want to survive just long enough to kill your target during the massive Q damage spike. Reviving later in the middle of your team with your target still alive seems pretty pointless. I'm ranting but it's pretty frustrating that Riot just nerfs Sterak's so hard instead of simply increasing its cost. I need a REALLY strong slot efficient item for defense on Nocturne and this one was beautiful.

BTW: I think Death's Dance might be interesting, although it's probably bad. I haven't tried it but my thinking is that the passive can make you survive vs burst and the CDR is also nice.

Noc>Yi when the enemy team has any of those.

Nocturne is amazing against poke comps while Yi is not. If a poke comp groups early and the enemy team doesn't have a super hard engage like Malphite or Kalista, then they can take towers and kill Yi if he contests since Yi at the 10-15 minute mark isn't that strong and doesn't have good burst. Once Yi is forced to play the poke comp's game, it is already gg. Yi could splitpush but if Yi didn't get super fed early, he can't do much if a tank brickwalls him under turret.

Nocturne can just jump in and instantly delete a squishy poker like Lux Ezreal Caitlyn Xerath Azir TwistedFate Nidalee mid-game.

That's a good point but don't both still need a primary engager before going in? I don't usually feel tanky enough to go in first even when I build a bruiser Nocturne.

I actually distinctly remember how annoying it was when lanes just grouped mid vs me when I was Yi. It's hard to kill anyone because they're not isolated and I might not even be sated at 18 min or so. If they manage to take mid turret, I often lose control of my jg too. The biggest issue though is just that I simply can't farm when they do that and siege. I have to stay with my team because if a fight does happen, it can easily decide the game. I'm also not strong enough to split push that early so basically I'm stuck in a really bad spot. It still felt pretty bad with Nocturne but at least I could farm nearby camps somewhat since my ult. is a good gap closer.

BTW: I found Ezreal very hard to kill as Nocturne. Blue Ezreal especially is impossible to kill unless he wasted his E.

this is mid-game where Blue Ez isn't big yet. When everyone is on about 5000 gold, you can delete him. Yes, you do need a primary engager, but that just needs to be someone tanky enough to distract them and draw some CDs. Once that happens you can rush in and delete the squishiest.
