Malzahar's Passive
After looking it for some time and seeing him in plays, I can tell you guys this is pretty broken. Consider this. Malz has damage negate and crowd control immunity for 1 second. Lot of things can happen in exactly one second, and you can't really afford to take a second off from your ability combo because his team would melt you down without that additional cc from your abilities if it has them.
Let's list out Scenarios shall we? I will be using multiple champions to make an example.
- Akali finds Malzahar alone in the jungle. She q Malzahar and dives to assassinate him because Akali is an assassin. All of the damages are nullified because his spellshield is still in effect for a second, Malzahar silence ontop of himself along with Void Swarm + Ultimate before Akali could Twilight Shroud to protect herself. Akali is finished.
1B. Akali finds Malz in the jungle and delays herself by qing Malzahar before diving him. After Spellshield is eliminated, Malzahar knows exactly what just happened. Before Akali can dive him with that 1 second elapsed. Malzahar simply repeat Q,W, R before Akali can finish her combo. Akali dead again.
1C. Same scene, Akali delays Q, twilight Shroud into Malzahar before Malzahar reacts. One precious second is wasted on Twilight Shroud. Due to Twilight Shroud's mechanic, Akali can't stay stealthed because each attack reveals her for time to give Malzahar to once again locks her down. Akali is dead.
- Nautilius with his team versus Malzahar Team. Nautilius catchs Malzahar off position... Q and it's ignored because Malz is ignoring CC. Nautilius is now off position because he pulled himself to Malz, Team Fight falls in bad favor to Naut's team.
2B. Nautilius's ally manages to poke Malz's spell spell. Nautilius knows this is his chance, but a wise Malzahar would simply not allow himself to be caught without his spell shield up. Repeat Scenario until either one get impatient.
2C. Nautilius goes all in ignoring Malzahar while trying to dispell his spellshield with a stray ultimate bolt or E, extremely circumstantial. One way can happen, another can. If Malz is dispelled, an assassin/diver would already be in combat with another priority target. If Malz is not dispelled, Malzahar simply enjoys freedom to himself because no one can damage him as long as that passive is present, nor stop him. Malz profits regardless of outcome.
- Olaf is angry that a wannabe Olaf-mage would steal his spotlight. Olaf demands Malzahar to a 1v1 stand off. Duel occurs. Olaf knows Malz cannot ulti because Olaf can removes it. Olaf throws an q to remove spellshield. No slow or damage inflicted. Still a sizable distance. Olaf throws another q. Hit or Miss, Olaf is still slightly faster than Malz due to being melee. Gap is closed, Malz by then has already thrown out a Q, E, and a W to eat away at Olaf's HP enraging him even further. Malz then understands that to truly kill Olaf, he would need to make Olaf throw away his resistance and ulti him. Olaf of course will not allow Ulti to keep him in a spot, ulti, becoming even more vulnerable to the E and W's sustained damage. Olaf dies while Malzahar receives half of his health worth of damage.
You can apply any of the champions to these and the outcome would be more or less the same unless you are so SO devoted to killing Malzahar as a whole that you fails to include his other 4 allies and the result would still outcome as a loss.
The problem isn't that his passive has good theme. The problem is he has both Olaf's immunity for a second, AND invulnerability to all form of damage all while being freely mobile as well without any actual drawback due to his own kit of a silence. three body blocks, and with Rylai, a sustained slow, and a Suppression.
Keep one or other. Not both. Reconsider it please Riot.
