LOL grantedNidalee would be broken if her spear didn't cost mana (and i say that as a nid main)

but your point is well made.

if Zed actually had MANA to worry about... he MIGHT be balanced, at the very least he would be more balanced than he is now

No, actually, that would be a bad thing. Zed having mana would mean each individual spell would be more powerful, as well as Zed overall being much stronger late game.

Mana is intended to be a restriction early game, in exchange for much more power. Energy is designed to limit spell spamming to within a certain window

i see where your coming from... but if that truly is the case... then zed abilities do far to much damage to use energy already.

He deals about the same damage output as Talon and less than Yasuo, but the difference is that Zed has no CC. In return for his mana usage, Talon has slows and DOT bleed effects.

Edit: Try getting double cloth armors early now that they've changed the zhonya's buildpath. This change has been helping me a lot against zed players.

talon isn't able to teleport to complete safety like zed is. even with his ulti turning him invisible he still has to walk. you don't need cc to escape or engage when you can freaking teleport. id say that is reason enough to require mana like talon does

No actually, they don't. It's not that energy champions have to be weak, it's that mana based champions (mages mainly) have much stronger spells, particularly late game.

Think of energy as the base line. They have a resource that is consistent throughout the entire game. It's designed to allow them 1, maybe 2 spell rotations before they have to back off and let it recharge.

Mages have mana, which greatly restricts them early (giving much stronger power or utility) until they get 1 (rarely 2) item that solves that, such that after that, they can get several rotations off, often without any problems at all. Once mages get their mana or mana regen item, they are throwing spells as soon as they're off cooldown

mages also have MUCH longer cooldowns (for the most part) so while you have to sit and wait for enough more energy to cast 1 more spell after using all your abilties

we need to wait for the abilities to come off cooldown.

you tryign to make the point that energy is to stop your from spamming spell and lower your ability to sustain spell in long fights. i think thats just plain wrong.

once we cast our spells with mana we dont get that mana back, our cooldowns are MUCH longer.

in a sustained fight lasting 30 seconds im going to run out of mana as a mage if i spam spells. and in btween im going to have to wait for cooldowns.

with energy you never needs to worry about "running out" becuase it regens itself so fast. and likewise you dont need to wait for cooldowns on abiltis just for enough energy to cast each spell

so energy champs will have much more sustained damage in a long fight

what mages do you play that you don't have enough CDR that you have problems with your basic abilities? For my Xerath, I will usually only have 25%, and that's more then enough for me to be spamming skills left and right every couple of seconds.

And you're right, energy champions are going to have more damage in a sustained fight; it's suppose to be that way. Mages are burst oriented, they don't do sustained damage.

As I said, energy is designed to limit spams to 1-2 rotations before having to back off and let it regen (and if it regened as slow as base mana regen, energy champs would either have to be massive overpowered or else they would the worst champions to play)

1-you are taking a troll post seriously wtf?

2-I am assuming you have never played zed even once a day in your life or any energy champion if you think energy costs aren't painful

Ninjas (and one other Ionian) use mana.

Kennen is fucking Pikachu and he uses energy. Shen has a magical spirit sword and can teleport across the map, and he uses energy. Lee Sin can fire sonic blasts with his fist and he uses energy.

That's the "lore reason" why, but another reason for Zed in particular is to solidify him as an early to mid game champ. Energy means he can't go oom in lane, but late game when mages have their mana regen/huge fucking mana pools Zed is far more likely to be shit out of luck with no energy than, say, Lux is to be oom.

because ninjas all use energy, and zed is a ninja alongside kennen, shen, bruce lee lee sin.

Game design

That's it, really

I mean he could have no resources at all, or mana

I actually always found a lot of what energy champs do vs mana amusing. Zed can teleport at will. Kennen controls electricity. But hmmm...Darius takes mana to spin an axe?

I get its most likely for balancing but I always found it amusing for example Zed making shadow clones and teleportation, as well as a death mark magical death sentence spell only uses energy, but like my example, Darius just spinning his axe cost mana.

I always thought mana was for spells, energy was like chi(energy champs are ionian aka asian) and resourceless was just normal power.
