I've been playing him on my other account, and while I struggled for like my first 15 games he is seriously strong.
Like I get that he can get hard countered by mid lane assassins like Fizz but what mage doesn't? He is so good at team fighting that even if he doesn't get kills in lane, he will always manage to get back in the game. Is it because of how unique he is?
It's because he's made to roam and get his teammates ahead. People prefer mages like Ori and Syndra how kill people themselves.
Aurelion Sol's gameplay is kinda boring. Because a lot of his damage is in his passive, he does damage by just floating there. It's the passive gameplay that a lot of people find unrewarding.
No it's because he needs a lot and i mean a lot of practice to be worth,his gameplay is really different from any champion in league,but when you master Aurelion he's one of the best mid laners in the game.In the NA LCS every game with CLG Aurelion would be banned because huhi is really good at that champion.But people don't play him because he's too hard and they don't want to put the time needed into him
Awkward to pick up and play, and ruined by people that jump on top of you - which will happen a lot in solo queue since you'll have barely any front line if any in most games what with everyone going full lethality assassins and crap.
He is tier 1 midlaner at the very moment but only few play him. New champ, most find him dull for some reason

He's not very flashy compared to other mages. Your job, as Sol, is to stand in the right spot, at the right time. However difficult that may be, for a significant amount of people, it doesn't seem like fun gameplay.
He's too team dependant in a meta where it's coin toss if you'll even have a front line
