@Meddler Can we talk about how bad AP support items are?

So, As someone who mostly plays mid/support, I was outraged to see none of the new support items gives AP. Then I remembered what happened with frost queen claim when it got changed and how I was pretty much the only mid laner not buying it in every game I played. So basicaly: support items with AP have to be kept bad so no one else but supports want to buy them. Thats why we overload those said items with mana regen and CDR and shit a small amount of armor/mr on most of them to ''compensate'' for the lack of AP. Give the said item an active and there you go! You have your typical AP support item!

Let's say I'm playing Nami I would probably be expected to build something like item 3222 item 3190 item 3092 item 2045 item 3117 item 3050 or replace one of these items by something else that gives like 50 AP. That build doesn't look so bad in itself but only gives about 100-150AP. But supports don't need AP right? WELL SURPRISE THEY DO!

Nami's W is supposed to have a negative amplifier early game so it is not oppressive, and get positive late game through AP utility scaling. But oh what a surprise our dear nami won't have enough AP to scale positively into the late game. And what do we give her to compensate? Actives, mana regen and cdr. Her spells's utility will be shit but she will be able to spam them.

Wanna know what I do on Nami? I build item 2301 item 3285 item 3060 item 3089 item 3504 item 3117. That looks like a troll build right? Well guess what. I am more usefull this way.

No, I don't have an AOE shield for all of my team, an instant cleanse for any ally or a crit boost to my ADC. But wanna know what I have? I can heal for more than 370 HP AMPLIFIED by about 10% for every bounce. My passive gives a movement speed boost of about 140, double for my ult. My E gives more than 150 damage on hit to the ally I target and about 55% slow on hit. And if I decide to change one of those items for one that gives even more AP, All those numbers are amplified too.

Of course, I could buy item 3222 item 3504 + redemption and get a 45% increased healings. But that won't affect anything else but my heal, and I will heal for about what I heal when I go full AP+item 3504 anyway.

Basicaly, when you are a support, you are given a choice: Either you build off-path to make your abilities have an actual important impact when you use them, or you build the usual mana regen, CDR and defensive stats path so that you can spam your abilities non stop to compensate for your lack of scaling and have some actives to also compensate for that lack of scaling. And I don't know if I am the only one but it feels so wrong to me to build Hp/resistance items on a squishy ranged champion like Nami, Janna, Lulu or Soraka. And even if I wanted to not build tanky on those champions using only supports item, well it is just impossible. Look at the AP items for supports

item 3092 item 3504 item 3174 item 3050 and the soon to be trashed item 3060 for a great total of 260 AP. 200AP in next patch. Not to mention those 5 items (4 soon) are the ONLY options for AP in support itemization BUT HEY I will have 200% mana regen and 60% CDR how fun!!!! I can't even think of one support item that doesn't have CDR on it.

So with 4 options for AP items on support in preseason, can we take a look at them please? At least having enough to make a build. Removing CDR and mana regen in exchange for AP would be nice. Let's say item 3504 had no mana regen, no CDR, but gave you 100 AP+ both its passives. That would be a nice start and I doubt Lux mid would build this and sacrifice damage in order to make her W stronger. and if she does, it won't be much of a problem. She will sacrifice damage for utility. Of course this is just an example of something we could do for enchanters, a new item would be more than appreciated and a lot of support items could use some work. Just keeping the AP on banner of command would be a nice start.

Oh and item 3174 item 3050 those two babes right here could use a total rework if you ask me. I haven't seen Athen in ages and nor me or my adc wants to do absolutely nothing but walk until a fight breaks out to not waste Zeke's passive.

I guess the issue comes down to preventing mid laners using support items. I was there during the days of Frost Queen's Claim Mids.

As for Zekes, the only reason it's allowed to exist is _because _of how unreliable it is. Does make for a very dull item, I do agree :P (I'm not very fond of how everything is being balanced around being unreliable nowadays)

Frost Queen's was total cancer but the only reason it was used is because it's active was usefull to mages too. If it had a shield or a supportive active instead of an offensive one it would have been a lot less popular on mages.

And for Zeke I would leggit prefer it to be removed and replaced by another item to be honest XD

Did I miss something with the Frost Queen's Claim mid?

Whenever I saw an enemy mid using that thing, I tended to just murder them because it wasn't really giving them good combat stats compared to what I was buying.

Back when the slow was 5 second at any distance and the item gave more ap/mana regen It was just better than other options and was builded on anyone getting mana regen. Until it got nerfed to its state where only supports use it for gold income.

The problem is that Riot gave support utilities reliance on AP to begin with. Supports were suppose to not require a lot of itemization to be strong. Now they require AP to scale all their utilities. But they don't get AP so they suck.

Pardon my thinking, but buffing AP support specific items would only allow "supports" like Brand and Zyra to build their high damage builds along with some utility. If I'm being honest, touching the realm of damage supports would make the Brand and Zyra support meta that does more damage than Mid lane over the course of the game even worse.

I don't think Zyra or Brand want items that strenghtens their shields, healings or buffs to allies. Wanna know why? Coz they don't have any. We are talking here about enchanters itemization. Mages that go support just use mage items with like 1 or 2 support items. Buffing ardent sensor or athenes AP won't make them more appealing to Zyra or Brand because there already is items like Rylai, Liandry or ludens that have passive to buff their damage/utility and they have leggit 0 reason to build items that would strenghten their enchanting since they have none.

Personally I think Redemption should offer AP instead of Health. I also totally agree that AP on caster supports is important. The whole point to caster supports is the power of their abilities in exchange for not being tanky; if the potential of their abilities isn't being maximized, there's no reason not to choose someone like Taric instead.

I do think Rabadon's is an item that can be built on both mages and supports, although it'd be nice to get a support-centric "Rabadon's".

But...what's wrong with your build above? The one you say is trolly.

You sacrifice utility for AP. Why do supports need their own AP items when they can build Mage items just fine?

I'm more upset about no new AP assassin items than I am about no new AP support items.

Well first, banner is getting its ap removed so I will have to change it for something else and I sincerly don't know what it'll be.

Luden's passive is pretty basic, not very usefull for supporting

and the point being, I build like this because There is no other choice if you want AP as a support, you have to go pick some things in the other classes items while you will never see an ADC build items from mages and tanks or an assassin get zeke or sensor. The only class I can think of that supports don't use items would be all the AD champions, otherwise mages and tank items are most of the time better than the support options. A tank can build full tank with tank items, a mage can build full AP with mage items, but a support can't build full anything with their items.

I really hate how they keep shifting Banner into this weird "cheap, low-stat support item" role.

I used to like building that thing on various different AP users. It was great on AP supports, but also on AP junglers or even AP mids, since it had a good set of stats (AP, MR, health) which made it not a complete waste of a slot for anyone with a decent income, while also providing a great active.

Frankly you're better off replacing Luden's with Mikael's. You heal for about the same, and while you won't be giving as much movement speed anything above ~90 MS is redundant due to the soft cap. Furthermore, Mikael's allows your ADC or other sustained damage carry to deal more damage with a better safety net, offsetting the small damage reduction on your abilities. And it gives you strong mana sustain (though soon to be weakened), which is important for Nami considering her obscene mana costs lategame.

Want good support ap items? item 3089 item 3116 item 3041 item 3041 item 3041 item 3151 item 3135 Yea, besides Mejas, which on some supports is honestly stupidly broken, thos are actually rather expensive items, but with only 1-2 of them, you already get alot impact on many supports. People really underestimate how hard most supports scale of raw AP. Yes, there damage isn't that great, but the utillity scaleings are actually pretty absurd. Sona with Athene's+rabadons has a talisman on no CD for her team, Jannas shields, the bonus ad it gives, her slow and her own MS scale prett huge, and her ult heal gets massive, she can get an entier team from 1% back to 100% with high ap. Namis passive easily reaches 100-200 flat ms while her E slows for 60%+ and the W bounces actually get massive heals and good damage.

Also, the amount of poke damage that a karma with just item 2301 item 3151 item 3135 does is quite disgusting

Try to get the reworked or "stronger" support items off midlaners.
