You mean the part where everyone was going 21/9/0 was more diverse?

No I mean the part where we could pick and max masteries we wanted and now were forced to choose between two and literally cutting out customization is half

But you aren't limited to that, you can still put two into one part of the tree, and three on the other side, excluding of course those single pick slots. However, I would argue that in most cases, everyone built pretty much the same masteries for chunks of champions, so even this limitation doesn't actually change much. I think right now what should be more important for them to accomplish is to give burst mages and assassins more impact from their mastery choices, especially those that rely upon base stat modifiers. They already toned down warlord's bloodlust into a relatively balanced mastery, now all they need to do is bring the others up to par.

Customization before really wasn't a big deal. Everyone used cookie cutter builds, and Riot changes the masteries every season. It's nothing new. Now, you have to pick between either option, most of which have a larger impact than before, or split it between the options, resulting in a more diverse but slightly weaker thing. The new mastery system makes it so most people will make their own mastery trees more often, rather than cookie cut it out.

There's actually incentive to go into the other two trees after you max the one tree.
