corki mid

So if corki mid is basically a net-neutral pick (doesn't win lane, doesn't get dumpstered) in laning and he gets outscaled by most other mids, why do people pick him so much? Wouldn't it be better to pick a somewhat weaker laner, fall a bit behind because you play safe and simply outscale? I think there has only been 1 successful corki in pro play recently for NA and EU lcs and even then, Hai wasn't solo carrying his team via corki in a way he couldn't have done on another champ. So mid mains:

  1. If you do pick corki, why do you do it? just curious
  2. If you don't pick corki because you think like I described above, why not? just curious

I get the whole safe waveclear, decent laning phase where you CAN bully some matchups, shouldn't get wrecked by anyone in laning phase, etc. But in a world of tanky tanks, burst damage junglers and mids and supports, corki has 0 burst mid/late game (because of his range - he will be cc'd and killed if he tries to get burst on squishies and cannot burst a tank) and lacks any cc unless you build rylai's or frozen mallet (very bad decisions). So he seemingly falls off very hard before you have a chance to finish the game... thus you either need to have snowballed hard early/mid or you get outscaled and lose hard. I mean the right mix of tank, cc, and damage from your teammates can make it work late game, but it requires burst damage, tank killing damage (beyond the adc), and tankiness you don't typically find in a team comp to make it work I feel. So I'm probably missing something and just want thoughts on it so I can figure out the logic.

He lacks 0 burst? His q chunks half your adcs health, then I proceed to proc sheen to two shot you

He has a lot of burst, and his ult can be such a good trading tool when your abilities are on cd. His Passive also divides teamfights, like a damaging taliyah, and can catch people by surprise.

Yes, he has burst vs squishies... in teamfights, he can't burst squishies because an enemy support or tank will cc him and their team will focus him and 1-shot combo him... thus I SHOULD HAVE SAID he lacks burst in teamfights. Thanks for catching that by me.

.... That applies to most assassins then. Kat cannot burst, because a support will cc. Same with akali. Lee. Khazix. Talon. Fizz. So on and so forth. Which skirmisher has reliable burst in a teamfight?

kat can burst. she has the damage and mobility to avoid much of an enemy team's cc and no longer really needs a full ult or even partial ult to burst out a squishy. Assassins like fizz, talon, zed, etc. I would generally agree with you -- you need a solid flank onto a carry to delete them and then run away or stall with zhonya until your cd's are back; however you do not see these champs in pro play right now to a large extent (some kat) while you see a ton of corki. Thus my question of why is corki so popular when you are generally so clearly needing to win early/mid or simply get outscaled and need a miracle teamfight to win. Kha and lee are not played mid - they are played jungle because... lee can snowball early and is tanky enough late game to pretty much guarantee a trade of kills with him and the enemy carry he insecs into his team while kha has much better survivability while diving in to deal his damage than a corki does to get the same damage on the squishies. Thus both kha and lee are more consistently safer at doing their job effectively late game than corki is from my observations. I am not comparing skirmishers, but midlane options which see pro and high ranked play. Ex: why corki over Ahri Annie Cassiopeia Fizz AurelionSol Brand Gangplank Katarina Leblanc Lux Malzahar Morgana Orianna Ryze Talon Swain TwistedFate Velkoz Viktor Vladimir Yasuo Zed Ziggs Zilean

I know why he is picked over some of these and that some others are played bot or banned, so unavailable for mid, but why not the others? Ex: lux has the same level of poke and relatively same safety early/mid game while being able to hit squishies even when tanks are peeling for them and thus more safely get off better damage onto squishies mid/late game 5v5 while bringing the same ability to poke in sieges. I won't go through all the other examples because this post is already very long.

The same can be said about any mid laner though

Why is corki suddenly so different from that

if syndra, ziggs, lux, etc. hit a tank instead of a squishy:

  1. they can do it from a safer range while dealing more meaningful damage
  2. they generally bring cc - slows, stuns, roots, etc.

Corki is actually a very successful mid laner right now.

He fits exceptionally in to poke/siege comps. He waveclears well. His package allows really easy roaming / early plays to help his team. He's mobile and safe. He brings sustained damage, which can make up for the utility ADCs that are being preferred right now.

There are a lot of strengths. He doesn't work with every team comp, but there are definitely some that go well with him.
