Just another complaint about matchmaking that I really hope is addressed in the preseason.

DOUBLE TAPPED E·10/16/2019, 5:48:54 PM·22 votes·11,725 views

This morning I had a match where, during champ select, I noticed that our JG and ADC were duo when they picked each other's champs and traded without saying anything. In the loading screen I saw they were Silver 1 / Silver 2, and thought "oh cool we have a smurf duo, this should be an easy game!" since as far as I'm aware this is supposed to be Gold 2 Elo.

Well I was wrong. They were not smurfing, and the enemy ADC was Plat IV. To make things worse the Vi left Garen open (I was first picking Kat and HAVE to ban Kassadin in that situation, no exceptions) in favor of banning Ahri (???) and they both basically ran it down bot into a Plat Kog'maw... the fact that I completely destroyed TF in the early game didn't matter, because Vi's duo buddy was feeding and he had to go play hero, so they would try to dive bot, TF would ult down and get a couple kills (which I just can't follow, I'm playing Kat here, I pinged like crazy though), and eventually I had no lead anymore, Warwick was getting tanky, and Garen was Garen. Needless to say we lost, HARD.

So yeah. Matchmaking sucks. It doesn't wait NEARLY long enough to ensure a fair match.

You know what the difference in skill is between Silver 1 and Gold 2?

Silver 1 is the top 53% of players. Gold 2 is the top 26% of players.

The difference in rank between the Sivir and the Kog'maw?

#11,394,406 vs 4,843,315 on the same role. Are you joking? This is a joke right?

That's 6.5 MILLION ladder spots difference.

That's like putting a couple high school football players in a college match and counting it against the team's record.

How is that good matchmaking in any universe?

gold two is the worst elo because of the diversity. You could get hard smurfs, plat players who got boosted, legit unrankeds that still dont understand the game, or genuine good players hardstuck because this elo is 100% coinflip. I should not be gold 2 getting a mix between silver 3 and plat 3 players. It's bullshit and coinflip as all hell. Sure we aren't masters players, but being unable to climb unless you're the one getting the genuine good players is rather bs. This is coming from someone who plays well abouot 80-90% of games. And by playing well i mean getting a good score in a horid matchup despite my team somehow losing Riven into darius. (Yes Riven is great into darius, I'd know.) it just baffles me how players don't take ranked seriously anymore. You drop one bad word and it's a no no but you troll, run it down, or throw the game and all they get from the 2iq automated bots is "Awh shucks, he tried his best" As he continues to die on a minute basis under the enemy turret. So much wrong with the game, but instead of fixing what's broken they try to add more to spice it up and challange the balance team further. As much as i think the balance team is clueless, the design team isn't exactly making it easy on them either...

Solution, Dont first pick katarina, even better dont pick katarina ever. So you banned kassadin and you're first picking katarina. Now I just pick galio, and collect my free win. Onetricking katarina is a terrible life choice, the champion only really works in normals.

kog maw is gold 3.

hes only platinum in flex queue, which is completely inependent of soloqueue.

the worst i had was in season 3, i was lvling a smurf around lvl 20/21 (this was also when max was 30) my main was only like gold 4 or something at the time. but i did climb to p4 by the end of the season. anyway i get in a game the rest of my teammates were solo q as well cause i asked them and we were all lvl 20. our enemies? a full premade of 3 d1's, a d2 and a p2.

so yah... that was fucking fun...

BUT! i did beat the mid d1 kha as mid yi but we lost the game

Yes but no. Ranks are meaningless especially when the players have played only a few games.

Sivir has played 28 games since the begining of the season. Vi has played 15 games since the begining of the season and didnt even play season 8

There was no plat player on the other team.

Also the ranks are not even used to match people, because riot is well aware that ranks can be meaningless. It uses MMR. Just MMR. Only MMR.

So would you mind reconsidering your topic and deleting it since there's actually nothing to adress ?

I'm gold one and I'll keep having silvers and sometimes plats too. I'd say my mmr is utter trash but I earn like 18 to 19 lp which means my mmr isn't as bad as it should be to have silver 1 players when in gold 1.

Believe me when I say I feel even worse about being on your team than you do. I absolutely hate, specifically during my placements as it were, getting matched in these hodgepodge free-for-all arrangements that make me, a support main, either super hit or super miss. I know I am a gold player. But I know I am a low gold player. I am currently silver. But the game clearly wants me in gold.

How do I know this?

Because every single game it's given me to climb from bronze--that's 50 games or so--has been me on or vs. gold-heavy teams. Every single one. And then I get to placements where I either get carried really hard or rolled really hard, or sometimes it's stacked in my favor. Either way, I've lost 2 sets of gold placements in a row. Here's how it went:

Attempt 1 X X X

back to silver. Next game was so easy I was pissed.

Attempt 2 Free V X X X

back to silver. Next game was pretty darn easy by comparison, but was very silvery and could have gone either way. Still, easy by comparison.

Attempt 3 Free V Free V ? ? ?

Mind you that these games where you see an X, I was either the absolute worst player on my team (if not map) or sometimes went even, and rarely did the best at all.

Now is it that I am a bad player? IDK. That's very subjective. Going 0/15/5 might say I am terrible. But I rarely do that. I do it in these promos though, because there is absolutely a difference in how a silver game (where I have spent most of my time historically) and gold games tend to go. That said, tons of people in gold play like a bronze, so I have no idea what's going on there except to figure it's smurf training.

But when you're used to games going a certain way, then bump a bit, and the entire nature of the game changes, and you're just not used to it, and this is what you get for your promos when most of the other gold-centric games felt more like a traditional mid+ silver. . .

Everyone loses. If I am gold, let me be gold. If I am not, don't make gold my standard for being in silver. And for the love of god, stop with these matches that feel either hyper stacked for or against me (or my team) with one in ten feeling like the division I am actually in or supposed to be in.

I have always suspected that their effort to maintain a 51% win ratio resulted in some shady games. But this season has been so, so bad, that I didn't even bother with ranked until a couple weeks ago. I played ARAM almost exclusively. And oddly, I feel like ARAM is more balanced than SR.

Even when I get a champ I have no idea how to play and I lose hard, I feel like ARAM is more balanced than a "coordinated" SR.

WHAT IS THIS EVEN?

Just saying, duos are punished by being put into higher MMR games.

Riot thinks that's healthier than making duos go to flex smh.

I agree, I'd also rather wait longer and ensure that every player in the match is very close in skill. Looks like you had very little chance right from the start. Only thing you can do is have faith that over the long run this will work out in your favor as often as it works against you.

It is the most important issue to me, followed by eliminating placements for regular players.

I'd be fine if Riot doubled damage and snowball, so long as they recognized how frustrating matchmaking and placements are.

Any plat in a gold game I just assume has bad MMR and is in a losing streak so they're probably tilted or about to demote. I don't consider them plat players tbh. They're more likely to feed than a silver in a gold game. The silver probably has a good winrate. Every game is an instance, play to the situation. I don't think matchmaking is that bad. I think people just see people with bad games and blame that instead of looking at their impact in their own games.

Been playing a lot of silver/bronze games with friends. The offset of a silver or bronze is easily fixed if you play well enough yourself.
