Champion base armor needs to change.

This is inspired by Phreak's recent YouTube video, which I overwhelmingly agree with. Base stats - particularly resistances - are a crutch for many champions and yet it isn't inherently obvious just how tanky those champions are without taking the time to look at their otherwise fairly irrelevant base stats, health pool aside. Furthermore, armor in general is largely ineffective as a purchase, making most good players skip buying it outright if they aren't specifically playing as a tank or against an AD assassin in a solo lane as a squishy, the only item being an exception to this is item 3026 which arguably only one class of champion cares for.

There are three very big differences between physical and magic damage (aside the obvious): 1.) physical damage cannot be meaningfully itemized against whereas magic damage can be 2.) physical damage is repeatable through fast and/or resetting autoattacks whereas magic damage is largely utilized by abilities with cooldowns 3.) physical damage items offer larger amounts of flat pen than magic items thanks to Lethality, as well as more scaling thanks to Crit

These three things work together to make attempting to play around physical damage so trivial that no one bothers anymore (in most cases). The armor stat simply isn't impactful in items, and aside for the squishiest solo laners against unfavorable matchups it is never the reason people buy items with armor on them in the first place. One overtuned armor item for carries in GA does not excuse the otherwise complete lack of counterplay to physical damage.
Champion armor needs to change in order for the game to be healthy again.

Suggestion: The reason players don't like armor right now is because it isn't impactful enough - how about all champions lose some amount of base armor and armor/lvl so that buying more of the stat is more impactful, and everyone gains a buff that gives % physical champion damage resistance and scales throughout the game to compensate? This would keep physical dps in check but it certainly wouldn't slow down lategame AD carries in the slightest - 90% of a billion is still virtually a billion, right? Some tweaking to armor values on items would need to be done for armor to be fair, however, namely item 1031. There's a big difference between having 40 and 80 of a resistance; Chain Vest only offering 35 armor for 700g instead of 40 for 800 should make it less abusable by champions that would otherwise have barely any armor early on, while making the stat more easily accessible for champions that need and intend on buying armor items frequently. Turrets and minion damage to champions would need tweaking as well, so that champions wouldn't get 2-shot by towers early on or lose lane purely to minion aggro in a world where everyone loses a large chunk of base armor.

I wish Phreak had more influence over the direction of the game. He is clearly smart. He is extremely lovable and humble. Hardly anyone else at Riot has his length of experience, and I'd say no one has demonstrated more passion and loyalty. The way he presents his points, I almost always find myself convinced by him and trusting his motivations. It's not just this video, but all of his interactions with the community over the years that make me implicitly value what he has to say.

If Riot announced that Phreak was getting more influence on the game, it would really give me some hope. At the moment, I'm on the edge of quitting the game after having played since season 2. I think if anyone could steer the game back on track to something I would enjoy playing, it would be Phreak. He obviously knows the game inside and out and he's been around long enough to know the depth of the game's history. He's a great shoutcaster, but I think he truly deserves a chance as a gameplay designer.

Please, Riot! Phreak is a treasure you are lucky to have. Please don't squander him! Phreak, please apply for a gameplay design position. The players need the change you can bring. You have ideas and insight that can help fix the stagnant decay of the last couple seasons. Please give me hope to stick with League, Phreak.

Phreak was suggesting universal base armor values so we can instinctually know how tanky a champ is just by looking at hp bars and items.

I really don’t think we should reduce armor per lvl just for satisfying armor purchases. Not only would it end up feeling like an obligation to build armor no matter what class you are, but the massive systematic changes to minions, towers, and items would require a lot of work to balance.

I think purchase of bonus armor is pretty good right now. Carries don’t always have to buy resistances, but if they do, they only have a few options since damage dealers should never have a satisfying option of being tanky and still dealing damage.

Also, dps from autos is not inherently better against resistances vs spells. For example, three 100 damage AAs into 50% reduction from armor is going to deal 150 damage. One 300 damage spell into 50% reduction from mr is going to deal 150 damage. Of course, if the fight is long the AAs will win and if the fight is short the spell will win.

Also also, resistances are more effective against lethality vs magic pen since lethality has to scale over game time and with high values (as you said) more gold is spent on lethality than AD; and since resistances counter flat pen, more gold of the lethality user went to waste than that of a magic pen user if resistances are encountered. AP can also scale with death cap or items that have AP ratios like lich bane.

Tbh if they really wanted to fix resistances, they would reduce the Amount you get from items a little, then increase bases and make them permanent, so they can’t be removed or ignored. (Only the base, so only bonus armor pen)

I don't know, he doesn't seem to grasp the severity of his "juggernaut vs Assassin role redefinition suggestion" thing. starts at 3:153:47. The mana suggestion for a certain class, AKA mage class, would probably work out good, but he is suggesting it as a "general" thing to implement. 23:5125:13. He also did not mentioned, the AP scaling that some mages have while also having a large mana pool that would alter these. Which is a biased or unfinished reasoning. He just should stick to his Marksman changes overall, he does seem tto have a vast more experience in that area.

the last time they reduced defensive stats from items and put more power into individual champions kits was the tank update.

they nerfed every defensive item in the game, compensated tanks by buffing their kit inherent steroids and resistance scalings, added a new defensive item that only tanks can use, and completely ignored juggernauts who where made to rely on the same defensive items, and subsequently dumpstered the entire class as a result.

i remember i made multiple posts like one or two month in advance not to forget juggernauts when they made the change to defense back then, and there wasnt a single compensation buff for our champions with the entire update.

fuck that. i dont need this again, and its not like they learn or even care for that matter.

Comments so far mention everyone losing base armor without also mentioning them gaining %champion physical damage reduction as well. Imagine how impactful something as little as 5% reduction would be early on, scaling to something like 10% as the game goes on. That is extremely worth missing out on a couple dozen points of base armor or so by lategame.
