Changes to create counterplay actually removed counterplay.

Talon Kassadin

By removing their point and click silence, there is now little counterplay for highly mobile squishies. Talon went from a specialized counterpick to highly mobile squishies and immobile mages, to being just a regular assassin with no escapes and thus inferior to most assassins out there. Kassadin went from an anti-mage that got stomped laning phase for the privilege of riftwalking all over his opponents late game, into a cripple.

Veigar

Veigar used to be a niche pick against high mobility, short ranged AP burst thanks to high incredible 1 shot damage and reliable stun. Now he's just terribad.

Ryze

Ryze got nerfed hard and now he can't do shit either top or mid.

Rammus

Nerfing Rammus by making the jungle harder just made highly mobile ADCs stronger. Of course, the only counter now to a highly mobile ADC, is highly mobile burst.

Every time "counterplay" is added to a niche or immobile champ's kit, they become unplayable and even less counterplay exists for ranged, mobile generalists.

Those champions actually had tons of counterplay. It just wasn't in the form of dodging shit, so according to Riot it didn't exist.

+1, apparently counterplay no longer involves using the brain.

I don't know what ryze has to do with anything. He was complete no counterplay bullshit and the class of champions he facerolled still isn't good.
