Lack luster vision Season 6 was a fun and all but ...

GankLord··134 votes·4,276 views

Can you please bring back green wards in Season 7? I'm tired of not having any vision mid to late game in most of my games because my team mates refuse to ward and I can't clear camps without fear of getting ganked when I need to catch up. I really feel this season punished players that took vision seriously and cut a break to people who never bothered to do so in the first place. In that sense I feel like the game was dumbed down and matches are won by pure luck rather than strategic plays. In short riot your going in the right direction with the return of Solo Q so continue on that path by bringing back green wards. Supports (not that it's only their job everyone should ward) mainly don't buy pinks or rarely place wards and late game you can't buy pinks if you don't have a free slot.

Don't forget the removal of the vision totem trinket, which gave you a pink ward instead of the standard ward, if you spent gold to upgrade it.

LankPants4 votes

That was mostly done to help champs like Akali, Twitch and Wukong. Honestly how often would you actually build that trinket over the red trinket in any other case? It's just a trinket that existed only to screw over an already weak subset of champions. There was nothing wrong with Riot removing it.

ZT Xperimentor6 votes

I built it on most every support due to being able to use it with a sightstone, likewise I used it on several toplaners. Besides it's not like riot is afraid of screwing over a particular class of champions, so why not bring it back?

DrugsForRobots4 votes

Countering invisibility needs to be more than forgiving than pressing a button and gaining a 1000 radius AoE of True Sight at instant speed, with no travel time, no setup time, and at a ~400 casting range to boot. Heaven help us if the things were still going invisible!

There seems to be this sentiment in the community, as evidenced a number of Boards posts in the past few months, that players want a way to place Pink Wards without sacrificing an item or consuming an item slot. This is a valid concern, but the functionality of Pink Wards - what I just described above - is crippling to the users of invisibility precisely because it functions the way it does. (Making Pinks more fair for stealth may be as simple as giving the Pinks an activation delay upon placement. Riot has creative people, I have faith in them.)

Riot knows this. They know that implicit in the Pink Ward's functionality is that it can be used as a combat consumable - functionally a substitute Oracle's Elixir. This is why they've removed it as an optional trinket upgrade. They actually care about stealth!

Rozzeta4 votes

And then you remove it, and invisibility becomes an issue. Again.

DrugsForRobots2 votes

That would indicate that the issue is with invisibility itself - the forms it takes, the way it is expressed, etc. Pink Wards address the symptoms (its gives players a way to 'deal with' invis) without fixing any of the underlying issues with invis, such as the near total lack of tell-tale signs and audio clues on those champions.

Anidan2 votes

At this point, it seems like they're shifting the burden of invisibility to the champions that are stealthed instead of wards, as seen with Evelynn's radius of detection or Twitch and Shaco's very brief invisibility. Stealth as it exists in most games seems to be one of those things they're kinda just phasing out.

Vision in general has been something riot should've reworked years ago, but just keeps pushing it off while making more bothersome champions to death with regarding it (rengar, quin, graves, khazix). Not to mention the artificial limit on wards they enforced; a limit on pinks is fine, but regular wards?

My counter argument is to bring back the vision totem trinket, but make it have a brief cast time (say 2~3 seconds); that way it's clearly only to be used for warding and not to suddenly deny a stealth champion to have impact. It already had the opportunity cost of having the occasional free pink ward vs having more frequent free green wards; and pretty much the support was the only one that could place both without going out of their way.

Too bad riot doesn't care about some other important facets of the game, like the mobility & damage creep.

DrugsForRobots2 votes

Well, define 'regular wards', because both the wards from SS and Yellow Trinket count toward your limit despite having different attributes, which is a different limit that that of Pinks, but for some reason Blue Trinket ward doesn't count toward either? Talk about convoluted and messy.

You're advocating for more wards, when you could be advocating for more forms and ways of getting vision. If the trinkets where all vision tools that didn't drop wards or place ward-like constructs, maybe they could have more charges, quicker recharge times, etc. and still allow the map to remain somewhat dark - creating suspense and some amount of risk. And if the trinkets could be used more often, they'd be more engaging just by virtue of that alone, yeah?

Personally, I think the 1 Ward Per Player limit is a beautiful design, as it makes Pinks feel special and unique. Maybe we could have a Green ward, or a Blue ward, or Red ward, all unique and cool in their own way, none strictly better than the others follow this 1 Ward Per Player rule. That way, you choose the ward that best supplements your choice of trinket, your comp, your strategy for preventing ganks, the enemies comp, etc. And everyone would have equal warding duties.

Arthimetes1 votes

What if pinks were changed to where stealthed enemies have to stay within vision range for a solid 3 seconds before they are revealed

DrugsForRobots2 votes

I think that particular functionality would be better suited for an actual Oracle's Elixir, that way you can have a True Sight buff that stays on your champ for a long period of time, without immediately crippling any invis champ that gets walks into your vision range. 3 seconds might be a bit long, since most forms of invis don't even last that long.

I also think it would make the Pinks less worthwhile as a defense against invis champs, which they should be very good against, if not the premier form of anti-invis.

Regardless, Riot could think of a hundred different forms and functions for making Pink Wards more fair - but it's unlikely they'll do it if everyone keeps asking for more of the same.

I spent most of s6 trudging through game of hateful, feeder troll after game of hateful, feeder troll. It's getting beyond out of hand at this point. Every year has been a little worse because the only people who are dedicated to reporting everything are the asshole trolls trying to ruin people's fun, and even then they just do it because they think it's funny. I've played for four years now, and up until the last month and a half I've never had a restriction or ban, ever. Would never see verification of my reports having any kind of an outcome. I have had 2 chat restrictions and my account is currently banned for 2 weeks. Still not sure why to be honest. I even have the chat logs. The only thing I said in chat that I can even remotely relate to being reportable was "Dude, do you talk to your friends like this? I know my friends would beat my ass if I acted like this towards them. So surely you don't behave like a jerk in real life so don't do it here" (probably not word for word, but it's pretty close) and that was because a Voli and a Teemo both called me a %%%% like 40 times spammed in chat because a Leo caught me and I died. Worth noting that they did not get punished as I have added them on my smurf and still see them online. Might have also been a combo ban from the game before? The one where I was Sion and Cassiopeia got mad because I told her that her ping didn't matter, I'd keep her alive in fights and we'd get the kills, and I'd make her too big for ping to stop her. All she heard was "doesn't matter", I know this because she quoted just that part back to me then came to top and fed like 6 kills to the enemy. I went mid lane since she was coming top nonstop and feeding. Proceeded to win mid lane somehow, with no one on my team complaining about it, even the Cass. Then got to end game lobby and had 9 motherfuckers talking about reporting me for trolling. So basically, I got banned for going to the abandoned lane and holding it down and for asking someone to stop calling me a %%%% and telling them that shit's rude to do. As a result, I don't think vision is going to make a difference. I honestly see this game falling apart in season 8. Now I"m gonna get off here and go download Smite and HotS. They don't really look particularly fun, but the friends I have who play it never get called %%%% and have to deal with temper tantrum throwing children. I'm an adult, I stopped spending time at daycares back when I was a toddler. Between that and the aforementioned lack of vision now I don't see much room for league to recover.

Anidan1 votes

For a game saying it's doing a lot to stamp out player toxicity, League seems to have one of the most easily abused report systems I've seen in a game. It hasn't even affected me and I still see evidence of its abuse. More than once I've been asked/told to join in reporting a 3-4 man premade on the enemy team trying to report the non-premades because they weren't on the same page.

No shit they're not on the same page, you're not communicating with them and when you do it's to verbally assault them for not being, I dunno, a mind-reader that happens to be spending time on a MOBA instead of doing the incredibly productive things they could be doing with that ability?

Why Graves of all junglers? I mean, jungle vision is effective against everyone

Big Daddy Husk15 votes

Probably because Graves is one of the junglers that brings hardly anything of his own to assist a kill in a gank, and when people can see he's coming it's much easier to just walk away from him at a distance then another jungler, like elise, jarvan, gragas, etc.

item 3361 I actually had vision control without a sight-stone mid lane. It was fantastic!!!! Give it back ya greedy bastards.

Durfain7 votes

Absolutely! I always loved being able to ward for myself. Now I'm forced to either buy a pink ward (which will rapidly get discovered and disappear once the enemy jungler runs over it once) or pray my jungler builds the warding jungle item (lol, who are you kidding, they always get the blue one) AND swings by my lane and is nice enough to deposit a ward. I just can't rely on my jungler to be available to do that in solo queue.

Weissritter5 votes

I will have you know I rarely get anything BUT the ward jungle item ): not all junglers are selfish.

Vistha Kai7 votes

In the last Season I'd come back to the lane with at least one green ward, sometimes even two, on top of a trinket. Then I'd proceed to play dumb pretending, I don't know the enemy jungler is in the brush to not have him sweep it.

In this Season I can't even have one brush warded half the time in early-mid game and I'm mostly playing mid lane with practically 7 different gank routes, with one ward only protecting me from max. 2 of them at the time.

Renascent5 votes

All I need is that sweet Yellow Trinket Upgrade for 250g to return.

Zoeeee5 votes

They were saying that the combination of item 3649 item 2049 item 2045 item 2043 item 3341 item 3361 made the map into a light bright. I'd rather have more vision than less, more so in lane. Right now I can ward once at 3 mins and once at 5 then I have to wait the full cool-down to use them again, and I can never ward further than a lane side river or tri bush. If your jungler doesn't get deep wards you're almost always in the dark.

NineTailedMystic3 votes

That's why they did it though. They wanted to have players take more risks than be ultra safe with entire map vision, and to help losing teams make a comeback because the winning team would likely have their entire jungle warded preventing any gamechanging plays. So on one hand I agree with the entire enemy jg warding change, but mid is so unsafe with the amount of wards they give.

You do realize the best way for a losing team to make a comeback is to have some vision up so they stop getting caught in unsafe situations right?

The removal of so much vision is a directly contributing factor to how fast and snowbally games are this season. Making comebacks is many times more difficult than ever because the winning team has so many advantage due to many of this season's changes like minion strength, in addition to also having significant income advantages.

The absolute worst thing you can do for comeback scenarios is remove vision tools. The absolute worst.

Idrk about that.

I think if we had infinite wards again, the game would be 10x more snowbally.

You don't really notice it . . . because of all the tower/minion changes. But, I just want you to sit down for a second, and imagine graves/Nidalee ((or even 4 man teams)) to run around nonstop warding your Eve jungle and slamming pinks down in every single location. Your Eve account wouldn't have even made it past gold 2. I know you'll try and argue against it. But like, there's a reason my Shaco jungle was really fucking good back in the time he was at his most weakest, it's because I abused unlimited wards and could systematically destroy the entire enemy team if I got a single kill in 2-5 minutes. The enemy team couldn't even contest me because they couldn't even buy wards because they had no money anyways.

So now, with junglers even more snowbally than Shaco. Just imagine Graves running up to you, telling you to go F yourself, kills you ((face it he will in higher mmrs. )) drops a pink + has his top laner drop a pink then lays vision wards in such a way so that the pink applies all over in your jungle. Smites your wolf. You're officially out of the game. To make matters worse,he can drop vision at bot and top and mid too. You'd think he'd be behind? No, he clears your jungle faster than you. And now that he's visionafied the entire map nobody can make plays, or dare try to ward against his team. It's just an extreme collapse that'll be unstoppable.

I don't want greeen wards back, and I don't want unlimited wards back either. It's way too powerful for the winning team, and the slight benefit it gives to the losing team is only in less than 1% special snowflake cases that you can just as easily do with the 5 wards you're given every 60 seconds.

Well there's no question eve is better off because of the changes, the only way to stop her is to ward all her camps and track her. But ev3carriesu was plat1 100lp last season and I just forgot to do the promos the last week of the season. So clearly my success with that champion (and honestly with slightly better individual skill metric last season minus farm rate) hasn't been impacted at all.

But there can be no question that ward availability directly correlates to game length and snowballyness.

Just for giggles if you want, go look up the average game times from the previous seasons. You should notice a trend: game times creeping up slowly as vision tools improved for 5 seasons straight, a spike for longest avg game duration last season (the peak of vision availability) and then a dramatic decrease in game duration for this season. The facts don't lie, limiting wards increases the snowballyness of the game, shortens game times, limits strategic diversity, and makes comebacks far more difficult. That's kinda just how it works out. Numbers mate, they can't lie.

Gotta admit, some of these stats are pretty interesting tho, I need to take some time and go over them even more closely, I feel like there is some hidden meaning in these things that I could puzzle out.

My avg game time as Shaco jungle was 18 minutes. I was 50-7 as him until I stopped playing and lost my touch.

I think games are longer because the players are just blatantly better now. You can't just run up kill a person twice and outright win the game anymore. You have to know how to make use of that death timer + exp, or it effectively means nothing now. It's one of the reasons LCS is more boring to watch now. They're not as retarded, and so they play ((for the most part)) a lot safer and don't make as many errors as they used to.

If we had the same level of vision now as we did in season 3/4((unlimited wards)) the game would be ridiculous tbh.

Now, I very well could be wrong. But I'd rather not risk it and have another dynamic queue experience.

But they are shorter... So I'm confused by this statement. About 3 minutes shorter on average compared to last season. The biggest single change in game duration for any two seasons. By like 150%.

That's a huge change. Games haven't been this fast and snowbally since season 2.

I feel like if they keep the trinket changes, limit stealth wards to a stack of 2, and increase the cost of them to 100 gold it would be a solid change. These limitation would prevent ward abuse and lighting the whole map up, players would have to choose between paying more for a non permanent but harder to detect additional vision option or a cheaper easy to detect by permanent vision option. Losing teams would have a viable tool to regain control of their own portion of the map, at the cost of immediate combat stats, but would no longer be susceptible to placing wards to regain vision of their own half of the map only to have all that vision immediately negated and cleared by enemy pinks, oracles, and raptor buffs, because they have enough tools to still have some vision after much of it gets cleared out.

Now, I very well could be wrong. But I'd rather not risk it and have another dynamic queue experience.

They're shorter now because minions are stronger than last season, dragons are more snowbally.

But I mean, even with that small change, that's just 10 more wards for the snowballing enemy to use to kill people that try to ward.

I play abusive champ. I kill him in his jungle. I clear it. I back, upgrade smite and get green wards and a pink. I now control one whole side of the map and repeatedly kill him in his jungle forcing his laners to come to me. Doesn't matter anyways since I know where they're coming from. I now kill all 3-4 of them. I just won two lanes + jungle. I'm now level 6-7 while the highest enemy is level 4. All because my gold lead bought me a 3 minutes of jungle wide vision + a pink making my top or bot lane ungankable.

I mean, if you want, you can blow that couple hundred gold to try and ward. I'll just kill you and sweep it while spamming my mastery banner over your dead body and then kill your laners trying to help you again. There won't be a defensive game because the game'll be too done to bother.

This is how my Kindred jungle consistently has an extremely high winrate even in her weakest state. If I actually played Graves and Zac I reckon my winrate would skyrocket, especially with those proposed vision changes.

But alas. I could be wrong. I'm just stating my own personal experience and giving examples of my own that show why this can be abused.

Valid points, but this type of thing was regularly done to me in previous seasons and all I'd do would be concede the half of the map he warded to him wars his opposite side Jg, and we would each still have a half to ourselves. It was actually a pretty standard swap in high level play, and people rarely died to it because it was expected.

Maybe green wards could have a timer to unlock in the shop? Put in place my previously mentioned restrictions and then only have them available to champs who are level 9 (corresponding with upgraded trinkets) or after 10 or 15 minutes of game time to prevent early shenanigans. Although, again, my experience was that those early wards just made us swap the part of the map we were working on and actually led to safer early games.

Pretty sure we all just wrong here. But I know for a fact who was wrongestest. Rito. XD

Edit: don't you wish all gameplay sub board debates went like this? Two players being respectful, presenting factual evidence, and making valid points for both cases? Do you think it's cuz we're both diamond or do you think it's cuz we happen to be friends?

It was a pretty drastic change wasnt it? S5 had a lot of vision. Green wards, totem that gave 2 wards, and the pink ward/totem. Then, instead of getting rid of one or the other they got rid of both and gave us this shitty half ward totem. What was their reason for taking the green ward out of the game any way? Didnt make any sense to me.

I don't remember where I saw that so I can't credit the source, but this would literally solve everything. This would singlehandedly give both extra vision and the ability to deny enemy vision in one fell swoop throughout the game and remove the "I don't have room for pinks" excuse.

For me not havin' proper wards ruins the game. I hate playin' blind and bein' forced to make lucky guesses to the enemies movements, or bein' forced to play passive in lane JUST BECAUSE I can't see anything. Like there should be at least an option, even if I have to pay 100 gold for a stealth ward next season I'm cool with that j'es let me use my eyes.

Out of all the changes made this season the removal of green wards is the one I was upset about the most. As a jungle main it's infuriating when you see a lane pushed up with no vision and you're in a camp on the other side of the map knowing that their gonna die in 5 seconds by a gank and then the people that got ganked want to blame the jungler.

Lack luster vision Season 6 was a fun and all but ...

I cannot believe they didn't manage to make an 8th slot for late game pink wards throughout the whole season.

I personally support this idea. Even as a support main I'm not giving up that extra slot just so I can buy a pink ward because it's simply not worth it. I love vision as much as the next support player but god damn it's hard to keep the even just barely lit up nowadays.
