Suggestion to make Worlds groups more even WITHOUT changing tournament format

Saezio··1 votes·2,719 views

So, I was thinking about how every year we see teams from the same region NOT get groups with difficulty respective to their seed number.(prime example is this year's FNATIC,RNG and SKT having harder groups than Splyce, IG and Damwon)

I also took into consideration that Riot don't want to change the tournament format because of technical reasons, and because they want ALL matches to MEAN something (which often doesn't happen in double elimination formats)

So, my suggestion is the following.

When the draw happens, instead of drawing TEAMS they draw REGIONS.(the drawing process is the exact same) After play-ins finish those teams are also seeded as Regions into the existing groups. (just like now)

Then after we have the complete groups of 4 regions in each group, each region's teams start to pick their spot in the groups from the available spots, starting from the Least Successful Region's Best team and working our way through all the 16 teams that were qualified.

I think this would provide more incentive for teams of major regions to want the 2nd spot compared to the 3rd spot.

Any thoughts?

Moving around the others teams and giving them more games just increases the amount of time it takes to get to this point again.

What I am proposing wouldn't increase number of games at all.

How is EU not consistent? They have been getting semi-finals quite consistently. They won MSI. Sure EU hasn't won a worlds (except season 1 but East didn't compete then so it's meh) yet. But EU has always had a very good showing in worlds. And if China hadn't won last year, EU and CN would be considered equals easily.

Also, CN had 2 solo lane imports from KR that carried them HARD last year. All eu teams are 100% european this year.

KR is number 1 undisputed, EVERY worlds was won by teams based on KR players. But if IG didn't have rookie and Theshy but had RNG or another China team's solo laners would they have won or even reached finals last year?

I think NBA does have rules against too many FOREIGN players don't they? Different state is not different country AFAIK.

Can an NBA team consist of 60% foreign players? In Lol there are no subs so with only 5 players playing it means that 2 imports means 40 % of your team is not native.

I think there are also rules about having a certain % of players in the team that were home grown. Could be wrong

Different state is not different country. Did california win with no american players? Also, that's a national competition it's not an international event.

But we are getting way off topic.

All I wanted to point out is that CN and KR were about the same prior to IG winning worlds. And eu and cn have been steadily chipping at the gap between them and KR and that gap now seem way smaller than it did 3-4-5 years ago. It feels smaller with each year passing.

And my proposition about the draw doesn't make it so that the best team wins, that already happens. My proposition makes groups matches more entertaining. And quarters matches as well. Would you not be more hyped for RNG vs SKT in quarters than SPY vs SKT? Wouldn't chinese viewership go through the roof for UZI vs Faker in a bo5? (I know they couldn't meet with this draw but just saying, having suboptimal teams progress because of easy group, and better teams eliminated cause of hard groups does a disservice to the tournament)

No, after the draw the groups from this year would look something like this

Group A KR EU NA LMS Group B CN EU VCS LMS Group C KR EU CN NA Group D CN KR NA LMS

Now, starting from the least successful(or worst however you wanna call it) region's 1st seed they CHOOSE where to slot in. then the 2nd seed of that region chooses their spot, and the 3rd is obviously left with the last available spot for that region.

We move on the the second worst region, same process. And so on.

This way the team from EU that ends up in group C is always gonna be splyce.

This thing that I am proposing is only making sure that groups of death and groups of life appear less often. Making it more consistent that the 8 best teams will advance to quarters.

You got the picking order wrong.

Let's say NA is the 4th strongest region ok? (even if we say it just for this example)

It means TL will pick a spot after all the wildcard/vcs/lms teams have picked their spot(they would most certainly avoid group C and pick either A or D). Then after TL, C9 gets to pick from the 2 NA spots that are remaining(likely avoiding group C and going for group A or D). Then CG is slotted automatically to the 3rd NA spot (most likely group C with a CN KR and EU team)

Now that NA is done, it's eu's turn as the 3rd best region

G2 get to pick what group they want(most likely group B), then fnc(most likely group A) then splyce slotted in group C

Now it's china's turn (unless we perceive IG last world's win made CN>KR, in this case it's KR turn to pick)

FPX picks a group 1st (most likely group B) then RNG picks a group(most likely group D, but could be group C) and then IG as the 3rd seed is automatically slotted (most likely at group C)

And last but DEFINITELY not least KR

SKT picks first (either group A or group D depending on what teams from CN and EU are in those groups and which they value higher, maybe also factoring in which seed from NA is in those 2 groups). Then griffin picks group A or D depending on what SKT left. And DWG is left with group C

Get what I mean now? Groups would look like this 99%

Group A FNC SKT C9/TL LMS Group B FPX G2 LMS VCS Group C IG/RNG DWG/GRF SPY CG Group D TL/C9 RNG/IG GRF/DWG LMS

Depending on what each team's priority is it could have ended with Griffin picking group C if they thought they would have a better chance vs SPY & CG instead of TL& LMS. In this scenario DWG would be in group D instead. Or RNG could have elected group C instead of D and then IG would have been in D instead. These groups make it more likely for the best 8 teams in the tournament to make it to quarters and provide better matches there.

You made a good scenario. Yeah that is how they would be picked. EXCEPT FPX IS CHINA FIRST SEED. IG IS CHINA 3rd SEED

Yeah, the point is that there isn't really a group of death. Maybe you consider D a group of death, but DWG and IG(not fpx as I said they are 1st seed) are the best teams and they should get out of it. And there is no group of life like group B was this year, where 1 of 3 bad teams are guaranteed to get to quarters. The 8 quarter finalists would be the 8 best teams in the competition. And none can really feel bad about the draw.
