Patch Chat with the Playtest Team - 6.16, the Pre-Pre Worlds Patch

RiotAesah··1 votes·91,218 views

What's up guys! I'm Aesah, and I'll be filling in for Gentleman Gustaf to bring you today's Patch Chat, which will be posted here on Dev Corner every two weeks along with the release of each new patch.

I recently joined Riot's Playtest Team, a group of Diamond+ players who play with the new champions, reworks, balance tweaks, items, and map updates before they are released. It's our job to the test the changes that our designers come up with and ensure that we're introducing positive changes to LoL in terms of both balance and fun.

In 6.16, we're excited to be releasing Kled, the Cantankerous Cavalier to bring some new dynamics with his dismounting/re-mounting mechanic to the Rift. Otherwise this patch is relatively minor- there are a few support changes with buffs to Lulu and Nautilus, while toning back Sona's newfound powers to a more reasonable level. Irelia and Viktor have also been performing just a bit too well, so we're cutting their power a bit too.

All of us on the Playtest Team are avid gamers so feel free to talk to us as fellow LoL players. Additionally, you guys can use this opportunity to ask us anything about what it's like to work at Riot as a playtester. While we can't answer specific questions about anything that would be considered a leak, the Playtest Team will be around for the next few hours to try to answer as many questions as we can.

I demand Pool Party Brand And Dragon Slayer Shyvana.

Wouldn't Dragon Slayer Shyvana be kind of messed up considering that Shyvana is a half dragon? She'd be killing her own kind.

The Last Ballad4 votes

That happens in her lore, the dragon that Jarvan slayed? That was the murderer of her father(she delivered the killing blow).

Omg that's right... I wonder what that skin would even look like. It'd be so cool...

Any plans to address Riven 's "quick combo" anytime soon?

Besides it being gated by ping, inconsistent and being unclear to non Riven mains If any sort of patch broke/fixed this (such as the one with overlapping CC) Riven would most likely be in a either super strong or super weak state and emergency adjustments would have to be made. Why not circumvent this problem and nip it in the bud now while also making the champion more consistent as a whole?

I can understand the hesitation to touch her because she currently sees play at high elo but pick and play rate along with other statistics are tricky to balance around as they can often be skewed (see:Riven win rate % by games played) and should be viewed in a dubious fashion when looking at overall champion health.

Its a bug thats existed since the champions initial release that consumes a large portion of her powerbudget and 4 years later Riot still has not decided on rather they want to remove the "quick combo" or give it proper support.

RiotRiot Afic6 votes

No plans to address it as far as I know.

There is something to be said for extremely high mastery curves of champions through super unique/intricate interactions/inputs. Just look at Nidalee for example. Removing the auto attack reset on her R had a non trivial number of people pretty upset, saying that we shouldn't be removing complex or high skill cap mechanics.

I am of the opinion that some champions should be easier to learn, and some should remain more difficult to master. I'm not sure what the sweet spot is for how many champions this applies to, but Riven to me is one of the champions that should remain difficult to master.

Hellioning11 votes

My only real complaint about this is that it makes learning that champ very difficult. In my case, I was getting stomped by Riven, so I followed the usual advice given: play any champ that is giving you trouble to figure out their weaknesses.

But the different between what I could pull off as Riven and what my average enemy Riven can pull off is so different all I got out of the few games I tried was 'hope the enemy Riven is terrible.' I didn't learn her weaknesses, I learned she is hard to play, and unless I bothered putting in the amount of time and energy neccesary towards mastering a champ I don't care about at all, I wouldn't be able to learn her weaknesses. It sucked.

La Bello9 votes

Removing the auto attack reset on her R had a non trivial number of people pretty upset, saying that we shouldn't be removing complex or high skill cap mechanics.

So is this your personal opinion or the general consensus of the balance team? Because Id argue that this philosophy directly conflicts with the direction you tookRyze in and amongst other more general changes overtime.

Id also argue that theres a difference between ward-hopping and "pulling an insec" rather than "having to playing OSU" to complete a certain combo within a shorter time frame. Whats the line between a convoluted input and an more meaningful-acceptable one?

As I mentioned before** Im not trying to get this removed outright** but rather I want to see Riot take an official stance on it with proper support. If not for the people learning her then for the sake of clarity and proper feedback. Thanks in advance.

RiotAesah2 votes

The most recent Nidalee change that Afic referred to is a great example; /r/Nidaleemains referred to it as doomsday, and as a Nid main myself, I was 10/10 levels of sad about the change.

I agree that Riven's quick combo makes no sense, but I also am pretty sure most Riven players would go crazy if quick combo was removed. I would personally be about 9/10 levels of sad. I don't know for sure whether there is "an official Riot stance" on this topic, but I don't think it would be beneficial to do so because things can change- this was before I worked here, but "Solo Q will return" is a good example of tying our hands with an official stance instead of dynamically adapting to what we think is right at the time.

Anyway, from what I can tell, it seems highly unlikely that Riven's quick combo will be removed any time soon.

La Bello2 votes

Those Nidalee changes WERE good changes though. The Nidalee changes hardly had any effect on how the general public percieved and played Nidalee. She stills lots of play at higher levels and more or less her win/pick rates havent changed dramatically but it served its purpose to reign in her power at higher levels of play so in that regard it WAS an effective change with very little backfire.

"but "Solo Q will return" is a good example of tying our hands with an official stance instead of dynamically adapting to what we think is right at the time."

Removing and/or completely redefining a long time existing game mode and fixing a characters bugs are such vastly different entitys im suprised you even found a way to compare the two .

The Solo Q changes affected literally everybody who played rank thus the outcry was 100X fold because ALOT more people felt thier opinions needed to be heard .

Buffs/Nerfs and tentative changes are the lifeblood of this game and happen literally on a weekly basis . If Riven were to have her QC removed only a small portion of the playerbase would be affected (see:The people who put enough time in to master it) and character health along with over all gameplay health as a whole should EASILY take priority over that.

If you would discard personal bia's and community outrage phobias then really dig deep and look at the pro's and cons of "the quick combo" then discuss it with your peers I think you would come to the same agreement that SOMETHING has to be done about it and that letting it just exist in its current limbo state is a bad idea.

any plans with the zilean bombs and yasuos windwall, though it is annoying that it blocks it yasuo can hit w REALLY late, i get its a counter, but in my opinion its broken. Then zilean is on cooldown and there is free yas kill. the least i want is the timing to be different harder to block the bombs. and if none changes please inform me why. I love this game but some things like this make me want to not play it. PS every yasuo iv'e played against has thought the bombs go over but they dont.Zilean Yasuo

I remember seeing this in the Dev Corner previously, noting it would be set for 6.16:

Link to tower changes.

Yet I don't see any mention of the proposed tower AI changes in the patch. Has this been moved to a later patch, or given up on entirely?

Here's the relevant quote from Meddler:

Make towers acknowledge calls for help if the ally being hit's outside their range, but the enemy hitting them is under the tower. At present it's unintuitive and really punishing that if you're zoned really far back from your tower enemy champions can stand under it and hit you without risk.

Give towers some concept of champion aggression memory. Basically towers won't go back to shooting minions until there aren't any enemy champions in their range who've recently damaged one of their team's champions. Main impact of that is expected to be on champions that dive at low levels using untargetablity effects (Elise, Fizz etc). The ability to swap agro onto another champion's still there and still powerful, trying to defend a tower in those circumstances shouldn't be as lopsided though (risk just isn't there for the attacker at present). As with lane swaps we don't want to remove early tower diving, we don't think the risk being taken/price being paid's high enough though, leading to a situation where you just don't bother trying to defend at all (tower still goes down, you just go down with it).

The A.I. Changes were the biggest thing I was looking forward to from Riot across this entire season, then it disappeared. No clue, just vanished. It would be nice if they are encouraging the 4 man gang bang constantly going on bot for the Tower to at least not derp around and actually shoot.

RiotAesah2 votes

Sometimes our engineers implement changes that seem simple enough and "should work", we test them in a bunch of games and everything works perfectly, then a week later we have a weird case where a Leblanc clone screws up the tower for the rest of the game so we need more time before we release it.

This may have been one of those times.

Are there any plans to address Caitlyn's oppressiveness?

RiotAesah4 votes

As far as I know, Caitlyn's winrates in normals/ranked isn't particularly high, nor is she overplayed in competitive, so you'll have to be more specific on what you feel is oppressive (her range? traps? burst combo? late-game damage scaling with headshot?)

Wheatloaf19 votes

General consensus seems to be her ability to pile traps underneath your towers feels pretty bad for her opponents, especially because even tanks can't safely trigger them.

RiotAesah7 votes

I personally feel the traps are pretty annoying as well but again, Caitlyn isn't particularly over-represented anywhere, if we nerfed the duration or amount of traps she could drop we'd probably have to look to buff her elsewhere.

warpenguin5558 votes

that would work well. take power out of her traps, give it to her q or ult

Photos of Ghosts16 votes

Her ult currently feels very weak, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Flyybug2 votes

How about making the traps similar to Azir soldiers? If placed under enemy towers, the duration is cut. That would make her traps feel less oppressive under towers which seems to be the issue. The current duration is 90 seconds. Cutting them to like 30 seconds under enemy towers make it so they are still effective for sieging as she can place them all fairly quick but also let the opponent wait them out. Every where else they are still as effective as live.

warpenguin55511 votes

her traps. she can block off entire paths and forces you to either lose 1/3 of your health or watch your turret die. either way feels like a wrong choice and is just very bad to play against. Not even most tanks can clear them safely.

Will you ever be buffing Garen any time soon ? Or have you basically forgotten about him.

Lord Bagul3 votes

Buffing? He is still a stupid cheap champ when played right.

RiotAesah7 votes

I don't think we have any plans to buff Garen. AFAIK there's still a good amount of our playerbase that view him as very strong even though he's not played in competitive, and that's important to take into consideration as well.

Silverclaw7 votes

If that's the case, why is Brand (a champion most people see as quite strong) getting buffed next patch (as it says on PBE)

YSeT9iEzJK3 votes

The only players who still consider garen strong are the bronze/silvers.

nobody higher elo says garen is strong..

its red posts like this that make me just want to leave the game. why do i even bother waiting if youre not working objectively and have obviously no intent to actually balance the game?

his winrate and playrate have been dropping the last couple of month. including at bronze and silver. all as a result of indirect item nerfs. he was genunely balanced for almost a whole year, and now after all the massive changes you did to the game with the mage update, he needs a couple number buffs. that is all. the risk of overbuffing him by making him a little more tanky or reverting the mobility nerfs after his rework is low.

since when do you care how a champion is viewed?

you are buffing a lot of champions next patch who are generally viewed as already strong. brand? vaynes lategame? why does it matter for garen but not for these champions? the only difference is that they are used in pro games.

personally im not going to wait another 2 years until you decide to look at him again. i know im just one guy, and it doesnt matter to your company, but if there isnt something happening before the assassin rework, this comment is enough for me to finally drop this game and never look back. there are many other good games out there that are fun.

garen has been weak for the most part since he was introduced to the game. at some point it doesnt feel like having patience to wait for you to work on him makes sense anymore.

you can say that you have other priorities right now, but you always have other priorities. and it is evident that some champions simply get more attention than others, and you seem to be mostly interested to work on your personal favourites.

MarineRevenge20 votes

Can you talk about what exactly is preventing him from being buffed? As long time Garen player in diamond+ elo (masters peak, d1 multiple season, d5+ in dynamic queue era) I believe he suffers from an overly weak early game. Not even relative to what he "used" to be, but relative to the strengths of other melee champions who completely lack any sort of ability to be a threat out of directly melee range - examples like tryndamere, darius, irelia, jax, who all scale equally as well or better and have the same core gameplay as garen. Bringing kill potential and little else to a team.

I don't think he needs any changes mid-late game in any form, but facts like his Q is strictly the better ability for trading early game because it's damage is both upfront and higher per-skill-rank in terms of what you gain for ranking them in any scenario where the enemy champ isn't completely isolated for greater than 3/4ths of the duration. His Q should be his utility skill but its his best dueling skill cause you need to get out before the silence is off or lose all trades once the enemy can retaliate. His early game is overly frail and the sluggish nature of level 1-3 spin (5 ticks), along with his unrewarding skill paths is super unfulfilling as a long time garen player.

He can't even jungle because of his W not stacking quickly enough on jungle camps, so he's an easily counter picked niche hero, with low role flexibility and a poor early game. He has so many factors working against his ability to reach a point where he can perform consistently at a high level of play, and in my opinion, just needs a small boost to his early or a redistribution of his Q and E damage to make E THE damage skill and Q THE utility skill that makes it more rewarding to play him.

As a final gripe when he was made more kitable by reducing silence, move speed %, duration and base ms from his kit his channel times on his Q could have been compensated in some way but skilled players can often escape from you during the animation, at times the damage has been applied and people can still flash after the ability has 'landed' even though they shouldn't be able to, due to silence.

tl;dr

early game overly weak q > e max for some reason for DAMAGE purposes, when it should be q < e q cast time makes for a frustratingly unreliable ability that makes him struggle significantly more vs skilled players

Thewhitebrow5 votes

I am a Garen main, so I am in absolute shock that someone in their right mind would think that hes strong let alone "very strong"? In a state of the game where almost every champ builds an offensive item with a slow (ice gaunt, rylai, frozen mallet) he gets kited to death, literally. He has a non scaling, single target form of CC in the form of a 1.5 second silence, and that is it. He is one of the slowest champions in the game (awful mobility), and his Q that gives him a move speed bonus for a short duration doesn't scale either (no increase in move speed amount or duration), but hey at least his Q breaks a slow, only to be vulnerable to any slow after Q is cast. So his Q only scales in dmg, his W is one of; if not the only, passive stacking abilities that has a CAP, and his E really only scales in dmg anyways in the form of "ticks". I mean c'mon people. The champ is literally just a meat shield, who can absolutely delete the enemy support for Killstealing that last kill (Cause he would be the villain).

Yet a few patches ago, Gnar; who is a ranged, tank, CC machine, with decent mobility, who, oh by the way! does % health damage too actually gets a buff??? Huh? Who was part of that group that said "Ya know what... We need to make that ranged, tank with lots of CC and % health dmg even stronger!" #gnarbuffs?

Hi I am FSat, gold II (so admittedly average when it comes to general skill) but I have more than 2 years of practically Garen only, over 400k of mastery points with him and I did write one of the most viewed Garen guides on the Mobafire network so I like to believe that I know what I say when it comes to the champion and his current situation. Here is my 2 cents. The playerbase who considers Garen to be too strong is likely made up of those who just dislike the champion in general, without actually putting out any relevant information on why he is so strong to them I can see the competitive issue being important here because post juggernout patch Darius did show up in competitive quite a bit of times while Garen did not at all... I normally am against balancing a champion based on its spot in the competitive scene, so in Garen's case I'd rather point out that we have some serious experts on him apart from myself who believe his early game is a bit messy and needs tuning, and give above all reasons, techincal and actual reasons on why that is... MarineRevenge being one of them (likely the best), has a very big and detailed comment right around here that I agree with and that should be taken into consideration, not just to say "ah yes he is right let's fix Garen's early game", but to figure out reasons why the mains think he needs tuning and confront them with the "playerbase" likely just saying "oh Garen is op, Rito plz remove from game" Because I completely agree on most of the things MarineRevenge pointed out I won't waste anymore of anyone's time repeating what's going on, just scroll, find the comment and let's hope someone at Riot notices that we got a point, not just a complaint. Have a nice day you all :)

Coconattsu2 votes

Hey, I am a diamond player in both LAN (Coconattsu) and EUW servers; that also plays mostly Garen ever since I joined the game in Season 3 as the first champion I played, reaching around the top 10 spot of Garen players in the lolskill leaderboard (currently #125).

While the ranking doesn't matter at all, it's just proof that I care about the champ and I know exactly his state in the meta, and I'm not biased when I say he is bad right now. We know Garen very well, an immobile tank that scales into a monster as the game progresses and destroys anyone that gets close, AT LEAST this is how you advertised him and the others when you reworked them in the Juggernaut update.

I never saw it this way, yes his late-game did improve significantly, but it's not like he is a monster compared to other champs that DO have mobility and bring more to the team, and as the meta has changed it has gotten worse especially with these problematic items called Frozen Mallet and Rylai's crystal scepter, items that are really strong right now because of the power and utility it gives, and make Garen completely useless unless you have summoner 4 up, and even then, if they have flash themselves well you're done unless you have enough damage to burst them down in the duration of the silence or if it's a squishy target marked as a Villain.

I do believe besides his early game weaknesses he needs something ELSE like, (just an idea), a 1.5 slow immunity on his Q when activated, or at least a slow reduction; a little more speed when running towards the Villain, something like this to compensate his speed nerfs.

Just adding a little more to the topic, MarineRevenge speaks for most of us and I completely agree with his points.

I'd be interested to hear thoughts on itemization in general, if you guys don't mind. Any items you feel need to be weaker/stronger?

RiotRiot Afic13 votes

I personally think item 3116 and item 3022 are potential problems. Certain champions are allowed to be strong in some respects BECAUSE they lack some types of CC. Being able to get a reliable slow on any champion to bypass intended weaknesses can be quite problematic.

HoNisBetterr2 votes

So Rito still doesnt think that item 3046 is broken as ****?

That Item can be abused so hard, esp on attackspeed/crit splitpushers like Jax and Yasuo.

50000000000000004 votes

Isn't that the intended use, though?

ProfDrDeath8 votes

Hmm. Tend to share that opinion.

Have you ever though about gating the slow effect somehow, so it is not a permaslow?

For example, making it like Duskblade or Kled's W? Or making it a toggle that severely drains mana/HP/CdR or AS when active? Or making it an active, that you press to get the slow effect on spells/autos for a few seconds? Or simply make it work like J4's passive/Udyr's Bear Stance slap?

Malicious Metal5 votes

If you nerf rylais you better give morde a really frigging big buff

MistroTTC1 votes

Do you feel that ryze needs any buffs or nerfs?

RiotAesah8 votes

Short answer: No.

Definitely don't think he needs nerfs as his winrate is extremely low at the moment. However he's a new champion with some tricky interactions in his kit, so I'd rather wait to see if anything changes when players get more experience on him before we buff him.
