Ranked Changes - Update & Known Issues #2

Hey everyone, Ed “SapMagic” Altorfer here on behalf of the Ranked team. Last week, we started rolling out the first batch of Ranked changes to live—Iron and Grandmaster tiers, the removal of Division V, Ranked Armor, and new placements. Most of the features are live and working well, but we’re still working through a handful of issues. Today I want to give you a quick update on those and let you know when you can expect fixes.

##Issue: Some players are experiencing low LP gains and/or high LP losses. When we added Iron and Grandmaster, we bumped many players up from Division V to IV, which affected LP gains. We also experienced a glitch where some players saw a dramatic increase in LP gains, allowing them to get a couple divisions above where they should be based on their skill. We corrected this, so it’s not happening to anyone else. But since some players now have an inflated rank, they’re seeing larger LP losses and smaller gains than they usually do.

On a related note, later today we’re planning to switch Ranked over to newer tech we’ve been using in other queues to prepare for position ranks next year. When we do that, some additional players may experience unexpected changes to their LP gains and losses.

Answer: We know this doesn’t feel great, but discovering these issues in Preseason helps us ensure they don’t happen at season start. These issues will correct themselves because of the season reset, so the current plan is not to make changes. Status: Resolved, No Changes

##Issue: Returning Ranked players get a provisional rank of Iron IV after one game.## This is due to a bug with the changes to placements. Returning Ranked players—that is, players who have ever had a rank—should be seeded based on their past rank/MMR.

Answer: We’re planning to correct this in 9.1, so returning players who play placements after that will seed based on their MMR. Starting next week, players who completed their placements in 8.24 and ended up miscalibrated (e.g., Bronze rank but playing in Platinum or Diamond games—sorry Rush) can open a ticket with Riot Games Support and one of our agents will help make corrections. For players who don’t, that’s ok—the issue will correct itself during the season reset.

Status: In Progress (Target 9.1)

##Issue: Players smurfing on fresh accounts seed in Iron and climb too slowly. We made a change so new accounts seed in Iron to improve the onboarding experience of Ranked. This had an unintended side effect for some smurf accounts where a player’s rank and MMR could desync (e.g., Bronze rank but playing in Gold or Platinum games), making the climb feel very grindy and unfair. Sorry CoreJJ.

Answer: Starting new accounts with no prior Ranked games in Iron helps avoid new players seeding in Silver and demoting rapidly to Iron or Bronze. The climb for smurfs will a bit more grindy as a result, but at the same time we want to avoid smurfs playing in Gold or Platinum games while still in Bronze. We’ll be accelerating LP gains for these players so their ranks and MMRs stay closer together. After the season starts, we’ll add even more mechanisms—things like the ability to start with some bonus LP after promoting and more aggressive division skipping—to further increase the speed at which these players climb.

Status: In Progress (Target 9.1+)

##Issue: Players are able to see provisional ranks on third party sites. We’re aware of an issue where players are able to see your provisional rank through third party sites.

Answer: We’ll correct this by the time the season starts so that provisional ranks are private and only visible to you.

Status: In Progress (Target 9.2)

##UI Bugs In a few places, players have reported confusing or broken UI elements:

  • [Fix for 9.1] The profile tooltip displaying past rank is incorrect for some players
  • [Fix for 9.1] The profile tooltip currently says “Past Highest Rank” - we’re planning to change it to “Last Season’s Rank” reflect what it is: your highest ending rank of all queues from the previous season
  • [Not Started] When clicking a different player on the ladder on the Ranked dashboard the summoner name is not displayed

As I mentioned in my previous post, if you’re seeing other issues that aren’t captured here or you just have feedback about how things are going so far, let us know in the comments. If I play placements on a fresh account in pre-season will my placements in season 9 be based off of my pre-season MMR or will I still be placed into Iron by default?

I'm on a fresh account with a 67% winrate across 45 games.
Even gaining +30/-10 it took 45 games to get silver 2, my last 35 games were all in mid plat MMR with a 60%+ winrate. At this rate its going to take 80-100 total games just to get P4 and by then my rank would still be 2-4 divisions below my MMR.
Unless you start giving +60 LP per win I'm not sure how my rank ever catches my MMR in the current system

Smurfs with high winrates reach silver or bronze and joing queues with master players i lterraly played one game all master and one bronze 2 player

I mean I got demoted to plat 1 and climbed back into d4 and still only get +12 -24. At this rate I need to win 8 in a row just to get to promos...

I was Silver 1 when the season ended with MMR good enough to get 21lp on a win and 16 on loss. When the Ranked Armor system hit I placed Silver 1 again, my losses set me back 22 LP max and I only gain like 16 per win. I fell from Silver 1 instantly and even crashed through Silver in a decent session, even with wins to offset the LP drops. I just climbed back to Silver II and my LP gain/loss is STILL 16w/22L.

Is my MMR seeded that much lower? What's the deal here?

Hey Sapmagic! I frequently read your twitter posts. It's nice to see someone at Riot trying to keep a close contact with the community. Anyhow, let me tell you my experiences with the ladder changes.

I was Platinum 1 when the changes hit, roughly gaining around 20-21 and losing 18-19 LP before the change. I'd say that means I was right where I belong. After the changes my gains changed to 24-26 and my losses to 14-16. This felt pretty normal. I mean, if those at division 5 got bumped up to 4, that means that those already at 4 before the change now had a higher average MMR compared to those that got bumped up. They should now gain more and shortly reach division 3. Same with div 3, with a bunch of players swarming into division 3, those that were there from the start should now shortly reach 2 and so on.

Now this was probably not the case but it felt like the most logical answer to the increase in my LP gains.

So I ended up with like a 7 game winning streak and got promoted to diamond (which would've happened either way, with or without the changes to LP) took like a 1-2 day break from ranked and then BAM! +15 LP on my next win. Tried again and boom, +14 LP! Lost my third and poof, -24 gone just like that. Won one more, still +14. Lost the next but got loss prevented so I assumed that this change was due to a server issue. Ranked queue went down after that so I was like okay, it'll probably work properly once the queue is back up.

Did it work when the queue was back up? The answer is of course NO! +13 LP on my next win and now I'm here, wondering what the hell is going on. The more I win, the less I gain.

So what's my question?

Well, is it safe for me to play ranked now or will I gain like +3 LP and lose -2903454230986087345603857325?

So i send a ticket and support told me " we dont have a button to alter rank sorry". So why you post this, i dont get it.

Fyi, Riot may want to get their story straight. The whole dumped into Iron but play vs Plats thing happened to me so per SapMagic's suggestion I opened a ticket and the CSR replied with the following gem

"I know it sucks but at this time there's sadly nothing that can be done :/"

Will the issue of inflated accounts with abnormally low LP gains and high LP losses be fixed/worked on before the new season starts or do we have to wait until then?

Why the hell can't you guys add higher LP straight away? Why make us wait for so long? Having bronze rank while having dia 4 MMR is the most disgusting thing ever. Getting +30-31 LP is no where near enough to climb fast enough and i don't care if it's pre season and MMR only matters, it would be nice to see my rank progress just as fast.

My friend and I were both Plat V last season but now we tried to duo in placements and it says the difference in our ranks is too high. Why can't we play?

I'm personally having an issue where I'm gaining 14 LP but losing 22 LP per loss. I understand the inflation, but according to my MMR I'm at the rank I'm supposed to be at, making it frustrating to increase my MMR before the season starts. I understand the issue, but when my MMR is where it is supposed to be I don't see a reason for this to happen.

So i just want to tell you guys, that the support will help you as long as you can convince them that you belong in Platinum. I was placed in Iron 1 and by the time i reached Bronze 2, i sent a ticket. I have been gaining 13 - 15 LP per win after 6 wins, 1 loss, 4 wins, 1 loss, 2 wins. With every loss, I have lost 22 - 25 LP.

Support said they couldn't fix it and referred me to this post. This post says nothing can be done, but to ask support for further assistance. So neither can do anything and the issue will not be fixed or touched until the season reset.

I still climbed two divisions with the minimal LP gain, but I feel snuffed as I could have pushed my rank further, had I not missed out on ~60 - 80 LP. Feels bad, man.

No ranked games for me until season 9, I guess.

I was moved from G5 to G4 when the change happend in SoloQ. I have not played ranked in the preseason until recent past week, I am experiencing insane loss to win rats for LP gaining around 13 LP a win and losing around 24 a loss. At this rate of loss It will take me 68 games played at a 2/3 winrate just to move up one rank, I don't think the categories apply to me as I never saw huge gains and my rank is 1 division different I just really don't think that one rank should punish me to a degree that makes SoloQ actually unplayable because it is so ... not rewarding.

I have people actively trolling my games because I couldn’t get placed before season 8 end and now I’m stuck in iron with a bunch of smurfs trolling and I can’t escape iron while I play high silver and gold players the dev team gives zero f**** about the player base and openly messes with mmr what a joke

Do_ old_ accounts with no prior ranked games start in Iron, too? If so, I'll scrap my planes for finally starting to play ranked this season.

Tbh only 1 % players are in iron, so you guys should do a total reset on the rank and mmr of all people. Otherwise this will never be fixed, and the game will feel too grindy, which will make all players quit the game.

Out of the 8 games I played to get ranked I only lost two games and won the others so why is my rank iron II, I just want to know why. I mean I don’t mind starting from there and moving up but I just want to know why I got ranked iron when I truly know I deserve a better rank than that.

In my provisionals of s9, the Q&A said that their would be bonus LP gains and no placements, but the system subtracted 5 divisions while only giving me 20 LP, and i had placements. I was really sad cause I've been wrecking as long as people don't dc, but its frustrating cause i cant climb. Please help

same issue here i'm right now B2 with 11W5L I lose more LP than how much I gain with wins. This issue is just on Solo for me I closed the last season in S5

I am a iron 2, and I keep matching with at least platinum in rank or normal. How am I going to improve myself when I just lane with someone out of my league and keep getting killed. I can only play aram and nexus right now. I highly doubt the efficiency of your matching algorithm.
