What We Heard on Ranked 2019

Hey everyone! SapMagic, the lead for Ranked, reporting back in. A couple weeks ago we announced some big updates to Ranked for next year. You spoke up with valuable feedback on forums, social media, and surveys across the world. On behalf of the team: thank you. Today, let’s talk about why we’re working on Ranked at all, what we heard from you, and lay out how we’re gonna build this together over the course of summer and fall.

Why change Ranked now? One of the big questions we heard was, “Who’s asking for changes to Ranked?” We embarked on this journey because we saw a bunch of long-time Ranked players had started to burn out. That makes a lot of sense given they’re doing the same thing over and over again for the same result. And it makes even more sense when you consider that our last major update to Ranked was more than two years ago when we added Position Select.

Whether it’s a champion update or a big system like Ranked, we try to stay focused on what makes that thing fun and special. Then, we try to look at those essential elements from as many angles as possible. Are players telling us there are parts of it that suck? Is it under-serving players it should be serving? Is it driving a certain way to play that makes League less fun overall?

In the case of Ranked, it’s really a combination of all of these. New tiers and placements are aimed at fixing obvious problems, and other changes are aiming to better serve players of all skill levels and add fresh ways for you to challenge yourself in Ranked.

We think these are the right goals, but we still have a lot of work to do. So let’s talk about what we heard from you.

You’re worried we’re making Ranked too grindy. With the addition of position ranks, it feels like you’d need to play twice as many games to reach your rank across two positions, let alone three, four, or five. We’ll go into detail on this in our next blog, but flat out you won’t need to play double the games to hit your peak rank in two different positions.

We also heard we need to keep true fill players in mind. For those players, the prospect of making way slower progress in Ranked than they do today feels really bad. This is a great point, and we’re doing some homework here. Alienating fill players would be a clear failure to meet one of our goals: to give better recognition for breadth of skill.

You’re worried other players won’t take games seriously. Position ranks promise to let you challenge yourself in off-positions without hurting the accuracy of your main. For a while, we’ve worried that that if we do this, some players won’t try to win off-position games because there’s less on the line. Worse, a few players might actively try to ruin your experience because they know it won’t affect the rank they care about.

Match quality and competitive intent are critical because they keep Ranked legitimate. We’ve explored a number of solutions already, but your feedback reinforces this concern. We need rock solid fixes before moving forward.

You’re worried positional matchmaking can be abused. We’re worried about this too. It’s actually the thing we’ve spent the most time figuring out so far. Specifically, there are two major cases we need to handle. First, we’re worried that players could queue up for an off-position and swap in champion select for favorable matchmaking. Second, some players could take that a step further by queueing up with a duo partner and consistently swapping positions.

I want to be direct: we believe in position ranks as a part of the overall changes to Ranked because if we get them right, they could help refresh the game’s challenges. We’re in the middle of finalizing our plans to solve or mitigate these abuse cases into non-issues, but if we don’t believe we can, we won’t ship position ranks as part of Season 2019. Period.

The good stuff. Outside of grindiness and abuse cases, the majority of the Ranked changes went over well for most players. Smoothing out progression with a couple extra tiers was a big hit, as were revamped placements. Splits and revamped rewards need some more work. We plan to do a deep dive on those later in the summer when we have all the details ironed out.

What’s up next? Our next dev blog will target crossing big concerns off your hit list. Then, we’ll do this whole loop over again. Pitch. Listen. Iterate. Repeat. All summer and fall long. Buckle up and come along for the ride. In the meantime, let us know if we missed anything major.

Thank you for considering player's feedback and even keeping the possibility not to release this feature if issues are not addressed in a satisfying way. Good job guys.[slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Is there any way to stop players from picking champions that they have never played before (new champions and reworks especially). I have found this to be a big issue, they feed every time. Make people play 3 games with that champ before ranked (at least solo/duo) or something would be a big help.

My biggest worry was the swap abuse as well.

Have you given any consideration of how to best adjust matchmaking so in the bot lane you don't have a recent Ranked player with less than 20 games paired against another Bot lanners who has triple the amount of games?

I'm okay that it happens from time to time, but it's super frustrating when you get a player who is either Auto filled or Choses the ADC/Support role but has little games played in that specific role. Unfortunately I don't' know what to suggest to combat it and I also concede we all must start somewhere. I really hope that at some point all new players to ranked are auto placed no higher than Bronze 3. A couple times this year I've been paired with a guy who is only wining 47% of their games, yet they were placed in Silver5?

A few times last season and a couple already this season considering the 4 bot laners on both sides, I've either faced a player who had significantly less games in bot or with BOT lane champs. And it's no fun for any of us. I don't like to wreck a person who has no idea how to play the lane any better than I don't like it when it happens in the lane I play.

I'm hoping these changes will address that somewhat.

I'm eager to see how these changes bear out and thank you for adjusting the ranked system, I think it's a step in the right direction too.

hey when you update ranked can we globalban new/updated champs for the first week? i know there are is some data to be gathered from letting them be played in ranked but it is very destabilizing to throw them into the mix and often times the champion decides the game on how strong they were on release.

it's possible this would just push that "new champ instaban" back a week but it would also give everyone more time to adjust to the new champ in a live environment and people first timing them in ranked would likely go down making the overall experience less caustic.

another thought would be to make a 10 game minimum for players to need to play before taking a champion to ranked. as a veteran player this is nothing to big for me but for more casual players it might be more taxing and add barriers to getting new champs rather that Riot do not want to implement.

Please tell me you guys are also fixing the following issue: When someone leaves in my games and causes us to lose, I lose a ton of LP thanks to that 1 guy. Can you please have a checking system for how many people were still in the game for a longer amount of time (so it cant be abused) and if someone was longer AFK then 10 minutes or so, the LP they lose is doubled and the LP the rest of the team loses is halved? Cuz that'd be a great way of punishing those leavers and it isnt as much as a punishment for the ones that are not doing anything wrong at all. [sg-ahri-1]

Can't remember if it was said anywhere but has it been decided on where the new tiers are gonna be and what they might be called?

AlorsAzir5/24/2018, 3:43:16 PM4 votes

I would very much like to know if you would be prepared to pull position select from season 9 should you fail to guard against abuse cases and lack of competiveness due to off-rolling ? At least temporarily if you can't figure out a working solution before the season start.

PsiGuard5/25/2018, 1:28:39 AM4 votes

As a solution for Fill players, what do you guys think about including Fill as an option to queue (so it'd be 6 positions). This would be similar to StarCraft 2's Random race which has its own rank. This would let players challenge themselves by seeing how high they can climb playing all roles, while one-tricks can still just play their main role.

Only potential problem I could see with this idea is that Fill players might just end up being support players if the population of the role isn't high enough.

Morning Raven5/24/2018, 3:47:06 PM3 votes

Well you seem you got a good start to this and are investing the time to make it the best it can be.

I just want to know what the names of the new tiers are. (Hoping for Copper at the bottom and Rhodium for the near Diamond tier)

"Swap abuse" isn't really an abuse if you compare to the current system.

In the current system, you can "swap abuse" by using a smurf account, and play with a friend. Your level won't be the one the system take into account.

So I highly doubt backing off the whole project for something you can currently abuse is a good idea.

I feel cheated. Loads of problems have been mentioned here, no fixes, yet still you say you are going ahead with it. The position ranks are only detrimental to leagues health. No matter how many free skins you promise to people who don't int in auto fill games, people will still int and run it down mid and afk etc. Even if they don't, do you really think players will be trying their very hardest? Or will they instead just half-heartedly play until they can surrender. Of course they will. It also severely punishes multi-role players, and rewards one-tricks. It's all I've just bad, and creates more problems than it solves. (I can't wait to have to remake 30 games in a row before I get one where everyone is in their preferred role and no-one is afk).

The problem I'm seeing you trying to solve, is one in which people filled are not as good in that role as their main role, so they let their team down. Firstly, I say: isn't that what league ranks are about? Isn't it supposed to show how good you are at league of legends? Not a very particular champion or role. That's the whole point. People who are good at every role deserve to be a higher rank than those who are only good on one. Secondly, if you really want to solve this "problem", my solution is this: have one rank for all roles (like currently), but have different MMR for every role (maybe not hidden anymore to show what's going on). So all wins and losses contribute to the same centralised rank, but you can be getting some LP from platinum level midlaning, and some from silver level supporting, at their respective MMR's. It all just contributes (in both positive and negative ways) to the same goal. This would solve most of the problems the current model shows.

Faxium5/24/2018, 8:43:18 PM2 votes

Instead of givin each position a rank, you can give only MMR, so the rank of the player will be unique ( and i do prefer it). You also solve the problem of player who only play "fill" and the problem of much fair game, bacuase the MMR will depend to the position. I dont know why you dont do that, bacause i think is siplier, clearer and will offer better result. Thanks

Hey, Rioter. I hope I am not late to ask a question. So recently, I started to plat Twisted Treeline with my friends and I saw this post. I realized: Will Twisted Treeline be affected by the new ranked system?

Skeletons Grave5/24/2018, 11:30:32 PM2 votes

Stone for low tier. Wood could work too but wood is a plant so i think stone works better. Plus we had the stone age in the past followed by the bronze age so i think that works out.

Now i have never heard of rhodium outside of a few video games. Something more likely to be heard of would be Steel, but this has the problem of color. There is also Obsidian which being black brings a new color and it would feel awesome( black is a popular color). Also there is mithril.

The only thing else i think can think of would be reversing the thought process and going for color first and then deciding the physical representation of it. Colors we already have= silver, gold, shiny green, brown, blue/clear, silver/blue, and gold/blue. So way too much silver Colors available=pink, black, white, red, orange, and purple. Skipping yellow because its similar to gold and usually unpopular. So would could there be... pink> Alot of people are not fond of this color and irritated getting stuck with it. Black> Popular color, coal for lower tier and obsidian for higher tier. White> odd color, chalk for lower tier and marble for mid tier? Red> popular color, bloodstone for lower tier, ruby for mid tier, and lava? for high tier Orange> odd color, citrine for low tier but not widely heard of by teens. Other then that all i can think of is sunstone. Purple> popular color. Amethyst for lower tier.

1 thing i agree with that was posted before is that Masters tier makes more logical sense to be ABOVE Challenger tier.

One of the big questions we heard was, “Who’s asking for changes to Ranked?” We embarked on this journey because we saw a bunch of long-time Ranked players had started to burn out.

Well that could mostly be attributed to the game feeling shittier and shittier from virtually every patch since the Juggernaut update, but sure, "burnout" works too.

Aside from that, please keep iterating. I'm really liking how at least you guys actually WANT feedback and are actively listening to concerns and taking them into account. I'm still not sold on this whole position rank setup since your rank should ultimately tell how good you are as a player by still maintaining a high rank even playing off roles, but take your time.

Don't rush something like this to be in time for the next preseason as Riot's new "flashy idea we're going to shove down the playerbase's throats and plug our ears for over a year when they complain" addition. If it needs to take until season 10, fine. And be realistic - if it's not going to work, then it's not going to work. Please no more of the "it's our idea so of COURSE there's no consequences and IS a great idea!" mentality.

I know, I know, you're taking concerns seriously and want to iterate, and that's fantastic, but this jaded old-league vet has seen philosophies and positions change on a dime multiple times over the years, so I'm hoping you can at the very least remain critical of flaws in the future. None of us want another Dynamic Queue catastrophe.

I did a survey for the new rank systems about position rank. It’s not a lot, but it’s not nothing. What you guy think about it?

It feels really good that you guys are actively listening to the community on this one. Theres a lot of companies that can learn from this (looking at you activision and EA). I am curious to see what you rioters can come up with as ranked can use a breath of fresh air. Keep up the good work and thanks for putting up with this (over)sensitive community

Dragfin5/24/2018, 3:37:19 PM2 votes

Positional Matchmaking is why position ranks won't ship because there is no way you can solve that problem as evidenced by your failure to offer any current solution or reason like you did answering the other questions. It simple means you don't know and have nothing in the works at all.

Oh and the word grind was created by the lazy casual and because there are so many of them it stuck.

Sheen Estevez5/24/2018, 6:19:20 PM2 votes

My idea to improve ranked is to improve champ select. My idea would be to allow dodges without punishment only because it was for a good cause like champ select hostage situations. Maybe after dodging a champ select we are asked like a report for why we dodged, it could even be something like "Personal Reasons" or "Computer/Internet problems". I feel like a small improvement like that to champ select would make a major impact on the overall ranked experience. If I was not on my phone I would love to make a full post on how I would take this approach and how we can prove hostage situations/computer problems by automatic detection by the system.

AtomToast5/24/2018, 3:57:33 PM1 votes

Hey, what would you think of adding like a general background mmr that influences all position ranks? Maybe not all equally but like if you lose alot on your offrole you also get a small damper on your lp gain on your main and when you do well you gain more etc.

Or are there any downsides I am not seeing with this?
