Updating the Gameplay Rules

Hey there, Boards.

I want to talk to you all about the Gameplay sub-board for a couple of minutes – tl;dr, we’re presenting some tentative rule changes to get feedback on them.

We’ve had many requests from passionate Gameplay forum-goers to look at improving the health of the Gameplay sub-board. There are many people that have strong opinions about the game, and the Gameplay sub-board ought to be the best place to discuss those. Unfortunately, it often isn't, and feedback is largely focused on suggestions to make it better. We'd like to start talking about how we would, theoretically, bring about positive changes that would transform Gameplay into a more positive and more useful place for League discussions.

Below, you’ll see some rules that we are considering, and we’d like your feedback on them. They may seem simple, but we want to make sure that what we’re proposing is enforceable and helpful, so we’re taking small steps. As a heads up, we’re considering removing downvotes from Gameplay when we roll out changes; they are often used to bury unpopular opinions that contain good analysis, and we don’t think that’s healthy for the sub-board in the long run. Upvotes still allow people to show support for good threads, and that should be good enough.

There are a significant number of complaints concerning the multitude of topics that fall generally under “Gameplay.” Right now we don’t think that’s a bad thing, but perhaps it does require a bit more attention to how we structure and moderate the sub-board. Happy to take some feedback about the issue of “scope.” For example, would tags be a good way to help organize things? Feel free to propose your own ideas on that.

Anyway, here are the proposed rules:

  1. Universal Rules apply. Most importantly, keep discussions civil and focused – comments attacking or insulting other posters, or that are generally off-topic, will be removed. On Gameplay, especially, bear in mind that rank shaming is not allowed. Rank discussion should, the vast majority of the time, not be directed at any individual player's rank. Telling people their opinion or experience is wrong because of rank won’t be tolerated.

  2. Posts must have a clear, but informative title. Intent is to cut down on clickbait and help people know the real content of your thread before opening it and engaging the content. If your thread is a joke or a misdirection, it belongs in Memes and Games.

  3. Posts must provide new content, whether that's a new discussion or new information/analysis on existing discussions. Basically, the intent is that we’ll delete reposts and low effort threads in an attempt to keep Gameplay neat & tidy. If it’s just asking to “Nerf X,” with no additional content, it should go on the rant sub-board. We want to reserve this space for genuine attempts at in-depth discussion. Short posts are fine, but they shouldn't repeat conversations already happening or just be rants about the game.

Let us know what you think. These aren't planned to be rolled in in the next few of days;. I want to emphasize that these are tentative and we want to make sure that we're in open communication with the community before making major changes. Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Some additional thoughts we've been kicking around:

  • As Gameplay covers a lot of topics, it would be helpful if posters added the topic in the title. [Items] Proposed Spear of Shojin Changes , for example. Obviously, we can't enforce that, but we're discussing some incentives for people who do.
  • We've talked about doing a showcase of the best posts, either weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Gameplay+ was a cool idea and produced some great results, but it was also very moderation intensive, as we had to manually review every submission. If you have suggestions about how something like this could be structured, that would be very helpful.
  • Riot recently gave some insight into their perspective on balancing the game as a whole. We know this is a contentious topic, but arguments that Riot shouldn't balance around one or more of those groups are probably going to be subject to heightened review.

Honestly? These are all rules I believe that should have been in place since day 1. Nice to hear that they might be coming soon.

A reduction in the number of identical "DELET YASOU NAOWWWW!!11" posts will be very helpful for actual discussion.

Two questions, though:

  1. Will there be more moderators to help with increased demand? Especially if duplicate posts are being cut, there's going to be a lot more reports that I imagine you guys will have to sift through.

  2. How tight are you going to be on that third rule? Is it just "it has to be something new"? Or does it have to be substantially different from what's already there? And what's the time requirement on those? Just no reposting anything on the first page of new or hot? Further than that?

Posts must provide new content, whether that's a new discussion or new information/analysis on existing discussions.

Feedback is, by extension, an opinion. You can't say people should have strong opinions and discuss them, but then say a type of opinion is not allowed, but THEN you also say opinions have to be new while most new ideas are direct suggestions.

Also, what qualifies as "new content". How long does an existing idea have to be up for me to say it again for it to be considered "new"? Isn't removing the ability to have multiple posts on the same topic reduce the image of the passion the users of this board have for a topic? If a Rioter comes on this board and sees one single thread about mages being overpowered, are they going to realize that the players think mages are overpowered or are they going to think "eh, it's just one post, who cares" because there's no visibility?

Both of these ideas seem flimsy.

Is using the statistical fact that high elo players are better at the game than low elo players, not as an insult, but a fact of argument still considering rank shaming? Or have we realized using facts without using them to insult is fine? I look at a very specific mod when I say this.

What about champion shaming? I've been gone for a bit, but this was the issue I had with mods when I was last here. Has moderation toughened up on shaming people because they play/main a certain champion?

  1. Posts must have a clear, but informative title. ... If your thread is a joke or a misdirection, it belongs in Memes and Games.

Good idea, but with that last part, let people make puns in the title while still having an articulate post. It's a means of grabbing attention; a function of writing.

Let people make similar posts as long as they are articulate. People should be allowed to have their voice heard with many threads to show (like a protest), but they should also be doing so in a good fashion.

Gameplay+ was this. I eventually gave up posting because of the stringent requirements.

This sounds like a solution looking for a problem.

If this leads to the point that Rioters take this board more seriously and visit it/answering threads: ok. If not: Leave it like it is now.

As long as it's not Reddit 2: You can't post anything really

I just wish there was a way to condense similar posts and topics. Example: when yuumi was released and there were 15K threads about yuumi which offered not much in the way of discussion... just a ranked complaint and opinion which could have all easily fit into one (albeit larger) post.

I kind of wish we can break down gameplay by items or a champion.. but I know that's a lot of work and unreasonable.

Just kinda frustrating sometimes seeing the same thread over and over.

might as well remove downvoting from the entirety of the boards with that logic [slayer-jinx-unamused]

Question about 1. Is it okay to self shame? IE; Personally, I think Master Yi is pretty unfair, but I’m just a bronze scrub to be fair.

I can see how this would possibly promote rank shaming so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was disallowed.

I love it!

I'm super late to the discussion, but can titles asking for upvotes also get banned? It would also be nice if something could be done about posters that frequently spread misinformation and blatant lies to push a narrative.

I love this updated board, but i do have a concern that shaco will never be in a good game state for a very long time. Would be awesome if y'all could update him a little.

I vote no on Gameplay1/2+

Sounds horribad.
