'Gameplay' is a cesspool because downvoted comments rise to the top.

The top comment of a thread should ideally be the comment that deserves the most attention. But all too often, I see just the opposite: Some idiotic comment below threshold that nobody can resist replying to, to tell them how wrong they are. That's why reddit doesn't sort that way. The purpose of downvotes is to remove bad comments from the conversation, but this website doesn't seem to care. Why even have downvotes if they don't do anything?

To be fair, the community could solve that by not responding to the comments that aren't worthy of discussion.

Pretty sure the way the system works is to sort based on both replies and votes. I tell people often, if you really think something isn't worth discussion, then don't discuss it. It's an easy fix, really.
