Seems like it encourages Bandwagon effects as well as some posters who shamelessly boost their comments and bury others by using multiple accounts.

It prevents witch-hunts.
It keeps the thread on-topic, rather than about how individuals posted.

Both of those are very big positives.

Making it visible increases the opposite - witch hunts. None of us need to see each others' voting habits. This is not something unique to this forum.
