Remove Downvoting

We've talked about this a lot but, ultimately, people seem to really like having the downvote option -- there was a lot of outcry during our brief test of removing it. It's a subject we're definitely open to revisiting, even on a board-by-board basis, but it is one that's a bit trickier than it seems at face value.

I can see why, but I wouldn't let people's fear of change deter any necessary adjustments. The reason I think change is more relevant now than ever is because whereas a site like Facebook has never had a wide-spread downvoating system, Twitter is reaching the point where they're removing the like button as well. It's spreading that the idea of a "Boo!" function is unnecessary in enviroments where discussion is valued moreso than preference.

You do realize though that it could have just been a very vocal minority that "outcried" about that right? Maybe create a poll and let it run for some time to see how the community truly feels about it.

Considering not having downvotes has worked on Gameplay+, maybe you guys could start phasing it out of the other boards one by one.

would be nice to see something at least close to it in some form, if it's even possible to have a system of "no downvoting without removing downvotes" (I don't even know if that sentience makes sense). It's honestly really frustrating to try to make a post that's thoughtful and tries to be respectful (like skin concepts for example), only to get downvoted by one or two guys who hates the topic/hate you just so it never sees the light of day.

Really just wish there was some kind of middle ground that could be figured out.

And, in case you haven't noticed, the number of upvotes/downvotes pales in comparison to the views. That's because most people don't actually bother with voting.

Actually, that's probably because, as I mentioned but you failed to address, the view count is based on total views not unique views. I saw a post get 800k views. I bet there haven't been 800k unique viewers of that post.

You don't need to remove downvotes to determine a post's value, based on that^

Your two examples are anecdotal. And anecdotal evidence is irrelevant.

And that matters...why? Don't just toss out words people have said to you as if it makes a point.

Having votes period does this. It's why I'm glad most other communities I'm part of do not use then and refuse too. They just cause too much bias towards things and in this company is are a real source of toxicity.
