i noticed that ulanopo now shows up as green "moderator" on the behavior boards and i think it may be better to have specialist "override" moderaotr if possible. like still give him mod powers on the board (except dont let him to delete my posts ofc) but make the specialist override unless he's doing a mod action. not sure if it's possible to make this a toggle/trigger, but if not, i still think specialist should be higher priority as it shows knowledge about the board.

We specifically made Specialist show up secondarily. It's important the moderators are still recognized as such, since Specialist is a role that is specifically not necessarily a member of the moderation team and we wanted to avoid confusion as much as possible.

yeah i getcha.

is it possible maybe to make the color override but the tag "mod" first? cause i think people like ulanopo who i hardly ever see commenting as a mod publicly may comment less if they're always having to comment as "mod" and i just dont wanna see ulanopo comment less (or any of the others who may now have both tags idk who all they are rly)

Advisor was also a moderator position, so Ulanopo was always commenting with moderator flair. I assure you the change in colors is highly unlikely to change the posting habits of any member of the team. And, again, we want moderators identified easily as such, which is why that flair overrides the other flair.

oh to be honest i didn't know all advisors were a primarily moderator position.

i saw the "advisor" position as primarily being superexpert mode (and i knew a couple had mod powers or whatever from seeing them lock threads).

good to know everything will be status quo :)

Things like this are a big part of the reason for the reorganization! With so many roles and so much uncertainty about them, it felt like a good time to go to a model of "MODERATOR" with a secondary option of "board specialist," and the fact that we could call out individual community members at the same time felt like it made this model a clear improvement.

I'm guessing it's impossible to let the moderator toggle which they're posting as? Cause most of ulanopos posts seem to be as a specialist and he's great at that - but when he needs to mod he could put the mod "flare" first? I assume you use the word flare to mean the tag being first but i'm not really sure if it includes color too.

It is impossible at this point in time, and the point of this change is increased clarity for the community on who is a moderator and who isn't, which this suggestion would hurt. Moderators are always (and have always been) welcome to post in any context, and moderation ACTIONS will almost always end up pinned or be specifically called out as such. If you don't see that, they're just participating in a conversation like anyone else would.

I personally feel that this idea that "pinned comments are mod, others aren't" is less clear than a toggle, but if it's impossible it's impossible.

I also don't personally agree that identifying mods as mods in all posts is necessarily, well, necessary but I know you've been a mod for a while now so you probably have better insights onto the boards than I do. Sorry if this comes across as backseat modding I just worried that some of the people I liked seeing post wouldn't be anymore now that they're "mods" instead of "advisor" or whatever the tags were.

Again, they always were mods. We were pretty clear internally that all Advisors were also mods. It may not have been as clear externally -- which is part of why we've made this change -- but I can assure you that I don't expect to see any decline in posting that is linked to this change.

We also did get a lot of feedback that having so many roles was confusing people, and people like knowing who is on the moderation team and who isn't. This makes both of those situations much clearer.

I have no doubt that you guys will change it further if necessary, and to be honest I've looked through the boards (if not posted) since the old software and I think yall are doing a great job with the current boards.

Thanks for replying and discussing with me through this, I do appreciate it greatly (and I'm sure others do too if they had any of the same questions).

I think most of the confusion comes from the torturous path we've taken with roles and titles.

For example, when the program first started, my title was "Senior Arbiter" because one of my responsibilities was to keep tabs on the other Arbiters and nudge them when they took questionable actions. Thankfully, we have Heralds now and I can focus on the work that's most interesting or important to me. If I don't comment as often as I used to or as much as some, it's because I have a busy personal life and because I do a lot of behind-the-scenes work.

Totally unrelated to the post at hand — congratulations on getting specialist! I see a lot of your comments and you're often super helpful. [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]
