Breaking Yasuo's shield does not count towards assists, why?

I'm playing Pantheon and I gank Yasuo.

I use chilling smite on him to break his shield, then within the next couple seconds, he is executed by the tower as I was preparing to jump to him and I did not get the kill.

Why did this happen? If I break his shield, I should get credit for the kill. Is this working as intended? Is this a bug with his shield and smite?

because you don't damage him, you just broke the shield, you can recall with Janna E on you if they attack you but don't brake it during the time

This is how it works with every shield.

It doesn't register the damage if you don't actually break the shield.

Because damaging shield no longer gives you kills, assists, or stops recalls
