so this one game i built flat ap on ahri which is probably fkin bad but none of them got like any mr items except for adc with banshees or something so i was like yolo fkit and didnt get any pen other than my boots///////// so this one guy was looking through my builds and he was like genius u never bought void but i got abyssal some times because enemy mid was probably someone annoying like lb

Going off base MMR alone, voidstaff is going to help you at least penetrate 10 MR, and probably more if you consider runes.
and the 80 AP isn't too bad either.

Assuming your opponent has flat mr runes and no mr per level or mr items, they should have 42 mr. Void staff will go through about 13 of that. It's slightly less magic pen than boots or liandry's but 80 ap and 35% mr ignore for 2500 is pretty solid.
Not exactly, the alternative is Abyssal Scepter, which gives 20 MPen, so if literally nobody builds any MR items, this would be your best bet as it has more penetration overall.
If you look at it like this, Say you're against an Ahri, who took MR runes, she'll have about 42MR. 35% of 42 is 14.7, it works, but Abyssal Scepter is 20, so it's better mathematically, and it gives you MR of your own to further reduce the damage she'll do to you. If you think about it, typically the boost are Sorc Shoes, boasting 15 MPen, so that, plus Abyssal scepter, Plus runes (typically 9), nets you about 44 magic penetration, so you'd be doing true damage to that Ahri.
