Good mid laners for someone new to midlane

So I've been playing ranked for a while now, but the one role I've always been absolute trash-tier at is mid lane. In an effort to make myself a more rounded player, I would like to pick up the lane, so I can have as positive an impact as possible in my games. Can you guys give me some tips for simple mid-laners, and how to play them?

By the way, my go-to thus far has been annie, but I really don't like her "one trick pony" kind of style. I like champions with a little more depth to their gameplay.

Lux if you want someone super safe and simple. Idk what ELO you are but Katarina is a good pick in silver and bronze. She has a lot of snowball potential. My one friend wants me to learn Diana for mid lane. She's good, but feast or famine, always has been and always will be. But if you want the strong sleeper pick mid laners that won't see nerfs real soon try the following: Malzahar, Viktor & Azir. They're not easy though. Malzahar requires you to know how and when to cast space AIDs on the minion wave. Viktor's laser aiming takes getting used to and Azir takes real good timing and positioning to pull off. And Azir also requires patience too.

Azir, period. Right now, if we were to put the entire mid-lane on a scale, Azir would be at the top without question. His farming is better than most things in the game, his poke is ridiculous (one of the few things that can nail things under towers without it actually agro-ing), and assuming everyone is on the same skill-level the number of true counters to him is incredibly limited. Even his team support is pretty good, as the free tower allows for plenty of mind games and the ulti allows for great zoning. If you ever want to be even remotely decent at the mid-game, mastering azir is an absolute must right now. Azir

Azir is a very difficult champion. In an effort to pull off great plays, many Azir players can put their selves or their team in a bad situation. i would recommend Ahri if you're fairly decent at landing skillshots. Otherwise someone like Malzahar or Yasuo.

Ahri and Lux are great for people that are new, Xerath is also good. Once you get more comfortable look at Viktor and Zed and then get to the top tier champs like Azir. Oh and AP Kog'Maw mid is super duper easy and Varus mid is a good mid tier.
