Which is better: spamming ranked or practicing in normals

So I'm looking to get at least plat this season, but don't get to get on too awful much. Do you guys think that it's better to spam a bunch of ranked so that you're still gaining/losing LP as you get better, or is it better to weave in some practice in normals so that you are theoretically going to get better than those of your elo in larger jumps. Some other information: I don't rage nor do I really go on tilt. I do play normals after two losses to make sure I'm not doing anything too poorly, but otherwise I mostly stick to ranked. Currently S2, but have played at high gold fairly well (last season ~G2).

Play ranked. Stop for the day if you lose a lot and take a breather. You shouldn't be losing games because of your attitude. If you lose elo because you got outplayed, you have to accept that, even if you drop. These are mindsets to have if you want to spam ranked but I do digress that it is the better learning experience. You will have to make a conscious effort to get better. For example I know Annie's base damage and cast ranges by heart and it's not just numbers I remember, I know exactly how far and how wide Tibbers will hit when I cast (like space wise) and it's so useful when you're chasing or something. It's things like this that really improve your play to a higher standard.

I normally play at least one normal and maybe an ARAM before I start ranked, just so I can get into the groove of playing

I always play ranked. I have gone from being bronze 5 last season to silver 2 and still climbing this season. If you keep playing you will eventually get better.

I normally just play a lot of normals, honestly. I know how I play, and what my skill level is, so I really don't feel the biggest need to do a lot of ranked. It's just up to you, but since you said you don't go on tilt often, it may be worth it to try and play a nice amount of ranked. GL with getting higher elo!

Of course people will immediately say "Play normals otherwise you will hurt other people's rating (and yours)" but this will get you a lot of ranked queue anxiety when you do finally queue up for rankeds, so think about that

It's good to play some ranked I think. The matches would matter more to the player, you don't surrender as easily and everyone goes a bit harder and the picks aren't just what people feel like even if it's five AD squishies. So I assume it's the better tactics to improve. And unless you're well below 50% winrate it won't hurt your placement either. On ranked you will be facing opponents who are placed about as highly as yourself. In normals you get a lot of mixed stuff with people from bronze to diamond all on one match; maybe the normal MMR is just not as exact or premades of multiple guys affect the matchmaking heavily.

I'd still go for normals, though. For example, many people including myself tend to play epecially bad on their first daily match. Or if you've lost a few matches of ranked in a row, it's often better to go for a normal and calm down instead of playing rankeds on full tilt. Of course, if you are trying new tactics, builds and champs you should practice them on normals first or your ranked mates will have every right to be mad at you if you're making it harder for them. Normals are a good choice to prepare for ranked play at any rate: getting runes pages ready or if someone can't play a role at all, they ought to learn a few champions to play on that role decently on normals, for their own best, (it wouldn't do you good if you lost every single time you were forced to play a specific role; not only would this stop your progression but also annoy your teams).

And these are two good tips I've discovered, at least they seem to work for me:

  • Draft Pick normals are more serious than Blind Pick. Less trolls, a proper ban phase, no screaming for roles and the average draft player is simply more skilled than the average blind player, I daresay.
  • During night time or before midday (depending on time zones I guess), you can play much better in such elos as Silver. There'll naturally be less raging, trolling and flaming with most kids being at school, the average player's age will simply be raised a bit and I am positive you can feel the difference.

ALWAYS practicing in normals. Spamming ranked will just ruin your MMR and make your rank nose dive, where practicing in normals gives you a way to effectively get better without screwing over your actual rank rating.
