Earlier we fought a team who were alright, but the biggest threat they had was a Jax who essentially carried them. He even was able to kill 4 of us when he was down to 10% hp. So I would like to learn from this and instead of avoiding Jax unless we have the whole team there: How may I counter Jax in the future?

Pressure him all game, wherever he may be. His early game is laughable, and he only wins duels with most duelists post 11. The trick is to keep him down and have the tanks stay on top of his items. Having a frontline is key, and a support that can peel for the adc because after he jumps he is very kiteable. He has to dive straight into your team to do anything so you can use that to your advantage.
Jesus no one built thornmail. With 3 AA reliant champs. Yi build is awful... and where is rengar Hydra? o.o
This is just some tips during early game laning phase. Around level 2 or 3, you two guys were off happily cs-ing off minions. At the instance you see Jax uses E early, it is your best warning to back off til the stun goes on cd. Or either Jax did a sudden jump on you with his Q then he starts his E, it's best to try to run away from him til the stun finishes, or if you're playing a mobile champ, like 
, dash away from him before you come back to him after his stun finishes.
Btw, Jax is at his most vulnerable point without his E, so this is all I can tell you based on my past experiences versusing top lane Jax.
Jax gains a lot of passive stats, mostly attack speed and resistances.
Frozen Heart and # penetration will help keep him down.

is a late game champion. His specialty is countering auto-attack based champions. My recommendation would be to pick an early game caster type champion. I would take 
, or 
into consideration.

Different Jax builds tend to have somewhat different play styles. Raid Boss Jax for example is a bitch to kite thanks to his 3.6 second cool down Leap, whereas duelist Jax is basically an impossible for for most auto attackers to face.

hes a late game monster it would b advised to not feed him early so his late game doesnt come any time soon...
