Who should I play mid?

I'll start off by saying I'm very much a top laner. I like to push and be my own little island up there. I main Renekton up there, and he's definitely who I'm the best with up there. To give you the best idea of the type of player I am, I'll talk about my mains in the other roles and why I like them.

I play him because:

  • He has a lot of options (sustain, manaless, mobile, hard cc, damage...) and I can alter my playstyle to adapt to whatever enemy champ I'm facing
  • He's arguably the best melee to take vs ranged champs and does favorably against many other melee champs
  • He's still relevant later in the game shredding armor for his adc, soaking up damage with his ult and heal, and stunning enemy carries

Support, my next most played role, I typically go Leona because of her exceptionally threatening all-in makes her very versatile. Not as versatile as say, thresh, but she can

  • engage through minions
  • is much tankier than a lot of supports with her w

After that is jungler, and I play a lot of Sejuani. Played her when she was trash, when she was OP, still play her to this day. Her ability to

  • cross over terrain instantly with her q as well as it acting as fantastic cc
  • no matter the enemy jungler there are steps she can take to beat the enemy, there's no like insta-lose matchups
  • her inherent tankiness and game-changing cc still allow her to contribute to her team even when behind

Finally ADC. I play Quinn a ton because

  • she has an escape
  • her trading is insane in lane
  • even when outranged she's got the AOE blind to allow her to move in and trade with longer-range adc's like caitlyn
  • she has an escape
  • she has an escape Seriously, at my (silver) elo I feel like people don't know how to peel, so being able to peel for myself is amazing. I know cait and ezreal are longer range and also have escapes, quinn can break channels and has a slow. I also don't have the sick mechanics to play vayne. Lucian, graves, and tristana may also be champs I try in the future, but that's not what's important at the moment.

In the mid lane, I started off with Velkoz and got real sick real fast of just getting completely decimated by assassins and yasuo. The matchups were so heavily favored on either my side or the other side that I just got sick of playing him. I picked up Lissandra to try and play against assassins, but longer range mages absolutely decimated me. I tried Malzahar, but he feels kinda boring and felt way too much like I was just playing top lane. Roaming didn't really happen. I just shoved to tower because apparently that's what Malz does. I've been trying Diana mid, which feels ok, but I'm not really getting into it as much as I did leona or quinn or renekton or sejuani.

TL;DR : Who's a mid laner that isn't super matchup-dependent? One that can be flexible and come out even or only a bit behind in pretty much any matchup, but isn't overwhelmingly micromanage-y and crazy difficult to pick up? I also want someone who can roam effectively but still has a good amount of waveclear.

Diana is a good choice, if you get fed she's super fun. You could also try mid Jayce He has the best of both worlds. Poke and engage. Ziggs Is also an option, safe laning phase, long poke, an escape, and a global ult that can wreck teamfights.

I would recommend Heimerdinger. He has no really bad matchups, and he laughs at assassins. He can roam if he needs to, and he has really good burst as well as extremely effective zone control.

Viktor . If you're willing to learn how to control his Laser, he's pretty great.

well as a tip for vel if you werent doing this already you can take barrier/exhaust instead of ignite to deal with them easier, as for versatile mid laners which i feel will appeal to you there is viktor and leblanc(not sure on this), personally i really enjoy bran mid so i think you should try him out. hope this helps

Morgana. Morgana is a fantastic way to learn mid lane. She's incredibly safe in lane, has great farming, and has a freaking 3 second snare at max level. You never have to over extend in lane and if you run ignite, you can kill most other laners in one rotation (q-w-r-ignite). If you don't kill, you can often push people out of lane and roam during that time easily. Seriously, ganking with a 2-3 second snare is devastating. With her ult, you cain chain her snares for a total of 4.5 seconds. That's fucking nuts.

Plus, if you have your runes and masteries set up just right, you can clear minion waves with one rank 2 pool, making it super easy to keep lane pressure and aggro minions onto your opponent while you poke with her snare. And speaking of her pool, it scales based off your opponents missing HP. Most people don't know that and some people don't pay attention to the tick damage the pool does, making it deceptively devastating in lane. Overall though, she just has great AP scaling ratios, with each ability scaling between 70%-110% (pool ticks for 11% ap on top of base damage every half second for 5 seconds, up to 10 ticks total)

And also, she has natural spell vamp up to 20%, meaning she can out sustain most other champions. If you're fighting AD champions, all you need to do is carry exhaust and counter engage with your rotation to turn the fight, starting with her ult to snare, follow with her q to extend that snare, while letting your pool do its work and heal you back for the damage they tried to do to you. Plus since Morgana can use ZH, your natural build order can offer you some extra armor against ad laners. She's a super low risk, high reward champion.

I wouldnt give up on Vel so easy. He is an amazing champ in both mid and support. I carried myself to plat from bronze just by playing him.

The only truly terrible matchup is LeBlanc. I honestly dont know what to do against her. All other nasty assasins like Zed, Yasuo, Ahri, Fizz, Katarina etc can pretty much be dealth with by simply farming from range. Your waveclear is soo good that you can just poke them and then clear the whole wave with 2 W's.

Ahri and Annie 2 best mid laners right now! Both very bursty!

I know its probably cliche to say but have you tried Ekko ? His wave clear is definitely there and honestly isnt challenging to pick up and learn. Other than thatVeigar Ziggs Zyra may be some champs to try as they arent too challenging as far as mechanics go.

In my opinion, Leblanc Leblanc is such a fun champ to play. I will admit, I got shit on a few times when I started playing her but now, I'm pretty decent, maybe even really good, at her. Her abilities are really simple to use but have so much potential. Playing her, as well as many other champs, require a knowledge of other midlaners and you will need to adapt well (good adaptation is honestly a general rule in LoL tbh). Her w (distortion) allows her to roam quickly and can juke people easily, if you ever get caught out. On another note, you can use her w to abandon ship when your teammates get themselves into a really bad situation. Her w + r (mimic) can clear waves quickly as you begin power spiking. She's good against most champs, but if you don't know how to play her well or dodge important skill shots, she's probably not that cut out for you. I've seen people say that Ahri is a really good midlaner, but she's honestly really risky. She's one of those make or break champs, where if you get some early solo kills, you can carry a game but if you fall behind, you're completely useless. I used to main Ahri but I found that LeBlanc can just shit on her if Ahri misses charm. Ahri Ahri can be relatively easy to play but you need to be able to land your skill shots. Charm is so important because it sets up your entire combo. Her early game is strong and she can pick up kills pre-6. Jungle presence helps a lot as well, especially if you're up against early game poke-heavy champs, such as AzirAzir or ZiggsZiggs. You can poke and farm with your Q and it gives quite a bit of movement speed while it's active. Ahri's roam potential is really high but if she gets caught out or cc'ed without flash or ult, she's pretty much dead. A midlaner that I've been fond of since I first started was AnnieAnnie . She doesn't have strong waveclear but once she hits level 6 and has her stun charged up, she can easily burst someone down and carry a game. ----All three of these champs are my favorites but you will need to be able to play with quick cast (assuming you don't already) because it allows for quick combos and burst. Another good pick is XerathXerath. His mobility is iffy, but he has great waveclear, mana sustain (passive allows for mana regen on basic attacks every 18 seconds), and long ranged poke, meaning if your enemy is farming under tower you can charge up your q and still be able to harass. He has great cc-- his w provides a nice AoE slow and his e, being a skillshot can stun. His R is amazing at catching enemies (CLICK R TO ACTIVATE SHOTS) and he's really fun to play. I don't see many Xeraths who roam but I think you can if you want. If you get spotted by the enemy jungler, you can just e-w them (stun and slow) and make your way back to safety.
