How do I make sense of MMR readings?

Obviously higher numbers mean higher skill leveled players, but whats the breakdown of it? In what range do you find Bronze, Silver, Gold, Plat, Diamond and Challenger players?

yah i messed up silver is 1000-1300 roughly

0-1000 is bronze, 1000-1600 gold, 1600-1900 plat, 1900-2600 diamond, 2600+ master/challenger

silver is about 1000 to 1300 or so I believe. not 100% sure, just going off memory and it's been a while.

Sounds about right. Most of my games have been landing myself in the 1100 to 1450 range. Just wanted to know where that would have me at if I were ranked.

sounds like you would end up at silver 2 to silver 1 on average for normal mmr wise. ranked is harder though since in normal people tend to not care as much if they lose and they try new things more often in normal; that and you could be fighting any rank in normal since it's their normal mmr with your normal mmr.

From what I heard from friends who try ranked for the first time, they usually get dumpstered by the enemy team. I assume this is Riot's protocol for figuring out who is a smurf and who isn't. But would you happen to know what the average MMR Riot throws ranked newbies into? I'm assuming its somewhere in gold...

actually, I believe it's around silver 5/4 mmr about for the first game or so(first game is fairly random, but most players you see on their first game is around there) and when you win, it gets harder, when you lose easier since the mmr goes up or down depending on if you win or lose. there is nothing that catches if someone is a smurf or not. if someone is a high ranked smurf, they tend to win most of the their games/all of the games. if you win all of them, gold 1. if you win 5, you will get silver 5/4 (I forget which one of these, I think silver 5).

Theoretically that sounds pretty darn accurate. Realistically I think the system is more complex than that. I had a friend who was new who won 9/10 games and got Silver IV. I assume its a fluke but the ranking system just confuses me sometimes, lol. I just wanted to get a better understanding of it.
