Proposed Leaverbuster system

TouchpadExpert··34 votes·2,881 views

The first paragraph is my opinion on the matter. The second paragraph deals with the proposed changes I want to see made.

I don't like the new leaverbuster system. I've never been banned by it but I still don't like it. I think its too aggressive and way too black and white in giving out those low priority queues. It is well suited for anyone who plays ranked, it's well suited for normals and PvP modes. But why is it in custom games and of all places why is it in bot games? It's been ridiculous for quite some time now. Something needs to be done.

What I want to see done about this is have the teammates of the player who disconnected get prompted with a questionaire asking if they want the disconnected player to be reported. Because to be honest, if they disconnected to fix lag issues (Riot's server is to blame at least some of the time for lag issues) or came back within 5 minutes and were key in winning the game or keeping their team in a close game... they shouldn't be penalized in such an absolute manner. The people who are inconvenienced are the disconnected player's teammates, not you Riot. If the teammates really didn't mind the loss of that disconnected player then why isn't their opinion taken into consideration? If the teammates say that they were inconvenienced by the disconnection then they have the right to voice their opinion and now Riot can follow through with the punishment. If nobody on that team says they were inconvenienced by the loss of the player Riot shouldn't issue a punishment on that player. Simple as that. Riot can implement a system like this very easily. Just remove that "I agree" prompt you guys made and replace it with my proposed idea.

Now if you cannot do this at least remove it from custom and AI games. Custom games are usually with your friends or people you know anyway and AI games you program to match a disconnected player with a disconnected bot. Losing one player in a bots game isn't detrimental to the team's overall performance because its still even due to your removal of one of the bots. Keep it as it is in ranked. Ranked is for serious players of the game. But all the other modes: normals, ARAM, Dominion, Bots and customs games... it doesn't belong there. Your move Riot. Do the right thing.

I'm pretty sure Leaverbuster doesn't apply to custom games? Because I leave unfinished custom games all the time. (Unless it only applies to games where you will be gaining IP/XP.)

I do agree that punishment for AFKing for AI games should be removed. Or at least downgraded to your proposal, because it really doesn't effect gameplay all that much at all and bot games don't matter.

As a side note, frustrating leaverbuster story:

This was right after patch 5.9, I believe, where the client started having login issues where people had to login twice. I was getting random massive pings spikes for no reason after this patch, but I didn't even realize that until I got into champ select. You know your ping is going to be bad when you lag trying to get into champ select.

I have a mac, and the mac client is naturally slow. Combined with my 2gb of RAM and awful ping, it takes a whole 15 minutes to load into game and when I've finally gotten into game, everyone else is already in lane. So, I rush to lane.

And League glitches out.

For some reason, it auto-sets me to walking towards the enemy base whenever I enter into a movement command and I can't cancel it or change the destination. Which gave up first blood and made me look like a complete noob. So I had to disconnect and reload. Which looked like a rage quit. Awkward.

GREAT. So I reconnect, wasting another 5 or so minutes loading. And then I get the leaverbuster message telling me I've been AFK for too long. And tells me it's going to disconnect me from the game now.

At this point, I just want to be like this: http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view6/4484167/mark-wahlberg-rage-quits-o.gif

I had to restart the entire client (because after that, league completely froze) and reload back into game wasting another 10 or so minutes. We still won, but I was miserable the whole time and pissed off that leaverbuster forced me to re-load a second time, forcing me to be even more behind.

OK that thing about dcing, coming back, only to be kicked out because "you've been gone longer than 5 minutes". This has happened to me multiple times and it's such a waste. This needs to be fixed

Leaverbuster's crap and needs shut off and thrown on the trash heap of crap ideas like DRM and POGs.

What Is Smite1 votes

DRM's are not actually terrible if you understand what they are trying to accomplish, unfortunately Microsoft didn't understand the impimentations that they could have used their DRM for on the Xbone. Imagine a Microsoft Gaming community that would check the age rating of the game and then use the kinect camera to scan for an actual changing "biome" or area of gaming including the person who is playing said game. What it could be used for is to limit specific age groups from playing certain games such as kids under the the age of 17 playing CoD,Halo, or other M rated games which would basically filter the amounts of annoying kids whose parents buy them these games that they know their kids are not old enough to play but "whatever, who cares." In essence DRM and POGs could be beneficial if utilized correctly and not to make a profit off of them. In other words if parents don't want to deal with their kids by buying them video games rated above their age then the companies should be allowed full control of the child/families console in order to keep them as civil as possible, because we have all seen those YouTube video's of kids raging at CoD and Halo...... Then we have Twitch TV and those really angry streamers (I'm including LoL Pro's, but they have reason to be frustrated since they are the primary, if not secondary, filter for champion changes)

Gallowgrim1 votes

..that you used "DRMand "POGs" makes me question how much you've researched friend.

Yea you caught me XD, I literally had no idea what a POG was, but thanks for the article and parents need to teach (or beat) their kids to become better people sooner rather than later in their lives XD

I believe it is too lenient. They need to increase LeaveBuster's punishment especially with repeat offenders.

I remember one time I lagged out, went downstairs and adjusted my wifi to see if it would help, and then rejoined. The whole process took about 7-10 minutes. I joined back in the game and we ended up recovering from my issues and winning. Guess what? I still got a warning for AFK and that dumb "I Agree" message. Riot needs to address this issue, as it would be an amazing QOL for all players.

Dumb and really inconvenient right?

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

I disagree about taking it out of normal games... Leavebuster is essential to helping Riot employees deal with the toxicity until a new Tribunal comes along. The fact is that leaving, for ANY reason, hurts the other players's experience with the game. It's just smart business for Riot to do something about that, especially if it reforms the player being punished and prevents further incidents.

I can understand, to a certain extent, why this would trouble people in the case of lag... but seriously, if you lag out more than one time in the span of a month, I have no problem with you getting caught by Leavebuster. Check your ping in a custom before you enter a real queue. Now, you say that customs have this system, but I leave my own 1-man custom games all the time, so there really isn't any issue testing your ping on it before a game.

Normals, Dominion, ARAM... all these are competitive modes for some people. Not everyone plays ranked all the time. I used to only play normals and ARAMs, and people quitting mid-game is just as toxic there as in ranked. Those people need to be reformed unless you want the game to continue to have toxic leavers, and Leavebuster is doing that. I like it as a system, personally, and I hope they keep it, maybe even AFTER the new Tribunal comes around.

My main issue with your opinion is that Riot's servers aren't reliable. They do crap out and cause lag all on their own. An example of this was when Lizard Squad was a thing and plagued Riot for a short while. So if this ever happens again with the current leaverbuster in place then what? I am to be penalized for Riot's mistakes now? No. That's wrong.

And bot games... why is leaver buster even in bot games? The people who generally play bots are new players and FWotD people. So leaver buster goes after a newer player and now that newer player thinks "I gotta wait 10 minutes just to play this game? I'll just go play something else." and now Riot loses a customer. Or if a FWotD player disconnects and returns they too get penalized? Bots disconnect with the player. It doesn't hurt the team as badly as it does in PvP. It has no place in the co-op vs. AI game mode.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

The most recent new player I've interacted with almost quit because of toxicity in co-op AI games. People are still toxic there.

As far as the servers go... Right now, the lizard squad isn't attacking. I'm sure Riot would take it into consideration if they did. And as far as their servers in general, I've rarely had problems with them. One offense with LeaveBuster isn't enough to get you into a low-priority queue. I've had several, and never even been warned, and I KNOW it warns people BEFORE punishment.

In the past, when their servers are having issues, they have been able to have loss prevention and such in place. There's no reason to think they couldn't disable LeaveBuster in those cases. It's not a fair argument to assume they're going to use maximum punishment when their end is faulty. It usually isn't. LeaveBuster is working great.

I 100% agree with you. I just got penalized because my computer restarted and it took me 20 minutes JUST to get back online.

I swear to God. This is getting out of hand. And hell, it wasn't even my god damn fault! D:

Leaver buster is essential but sometimes it's wrong. For example computer lags out and pwwwwwwwss. You load back in. ( I made no sense didnt i)

Gallowgrim3 votes

It's only essential to letting Riot be lazy about doing a job that ought have actual hands-on oversight.

Therefore not essential whatsoever.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

It depends entirely on what you see as essential.

You want Riot to have to hire so many people that LoL becomes subtraction based? Okay, then it's not essential.

Human workers are REALLY EXPENSIVE. If you want the job to be hands-on, you just made this game cost a LOT of money, my friend.

Gallowgrim1 votes

And?

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

And Riot is a business. They are here to make money, not to give us all exactly what we want for free.

There is nothing wrong with that

Gallowgrim1 votes

I doubt they'd notice much of a difference with the money they're making.

And 'free' is not relevant in my case, or in many cases.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Your individual case doesn't matter to a business. It's fine for you to have your opinion, but to say what is and isn't essential about their business is overstepping, imo.

Gallowgrim1 votes

So you're saying stopping AFKs is more important than stopping toxicity?

Care to objectively explain why that is? Why AFKs deserve automated enforcement?

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

AFKs are toxic. I don't delineate between those two things.

LeaveBuster isn't just about "AFKs," either, if you're talking about accidental occurrences. It's also about stopping rage-quitting, as well, a toxic behavior.

The point here, overall, is for Riot to send a clear message about which behaviors are and aren't acceptable. The opinion that AFKs shouldn't be punishable is popular, but Riot doesn't think that.

Riot is trying very hard to have a clear stance. They disagree. The want EVERYONE to understand that going AFK is not acceptable. I call it toxic, they may not. Either way, it IS punishable. It's natural for people to be on both sides of that argument. I wouldn't demonize anyone for disagreeing.

For me, it's just about how that affects the other players. When you AFK, it ruins the game for 9 people. If something in your life is more important than the game, the lower priority queue will be worth it. It's a small hurdle for people who only occasionally/never see it.

I can understand you needing pick a friend up from a car accident, or see someone who was just admitted to the hospital. By all means, leave the game for that. Those things are rare, though, so the players that have those particular issues won't be punished, or will be rarely punished. It's the people who make a HABIT of going AFK that get the brunt of it. It is designed to STRONGLY DISCOURAGE people from going AFK, without removing them from the playerbase.

In my opinion, it is doing that job well.

What Is Smite1 votes

I'd be willing to do the tribunal crap for $9 minimum wage per hour and I don't give two shits who the person is, if they deserve a ban/restriction then by all means they reap what they sow

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

$9 is still expensive if they had to hire 1000 people to do it. By missing that point, you aren't really making any business sense.

Riot is a business. Not a charity.

What Is Smite1 votes

Well you can't just say that if Riot hire's 1000 people for $9 an hour wage they would be at a loss, there would have to be projected gains from hiring the 1000 people since it has been statistically proven that when customer service/support goes up so do the company profits because there is a mutual trust between the consumer and company that would entice the consumer to purchase more of the product that the company is selling/making. I know this from working in retail and when a competitor store doesn't provide satisfactory customer service they come to my retail store and we help them find what they need, the effect is that we now have those customers coming back to buy from us rather than the other retailers because of the customer service we gave them.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

That works both ways. You can't assume they have the money for that without looking at their books.

I side with them, because they CAN look at their books, and they are committed to coming up with the best solution. I would bet ALL THE MONEY that someone at Riot looked into this at some point. I can't guarantee they looked into it in the depth that would satisfy you, but it's in their best interest to investigate their options.

Yes, customer service is important, and you'll notice that I'm not the only one in this thread who likes LeaveBuster.

if your computer lags out very rarely then you have nothing to worry about however if it is an constant thing then you shouldnt be playing league until you can isolate and fix the issue.

I think they should make it so the game won't install in computers that have 2gb or less RAM or certain age of video cards.

R1102 votes

The toaster I play on has 2gb RAM but I can play perfectly fine without dc'ing. As your RAM doesn't affect dc's but your connection does. The only way it can be related to disconnects is when the game crashes as the computer doesn't have enough RAM but then you wouldn't be able to get through the tutorial anyway. I highly doubt that more than 1% of all disconnects are caused by toasters that can't run the game.

Singing Lark1 votes

I play with 2gb of RAM, and I can guarantee you, the game is 100% playable at lowest settings.

This empowers players who have afks on their team --maybe this will reduce afk QQ in boards--

I fully support this since players feel like they contributed to banning/unbanning other players.

It should be like the surrender system in terms of votes, if 70% vote "ban" the player gets an afk registered on their account.

Yup. No need for a tribunal because teammates are the tribunal. Saves Riot money, makes the leaving party member have to suck up to their teammates if they don't want a report and Riot can wash their hands of the whole ordeal (something they enjoy doing) and just state "your peers found you guilty of this, not us." I don't see why this idea hasn't implemented this yet or why Lyte hasn't considered it into his grand scheme of plans on how to make league a better community.

Iirc, if you come back within 5 minutes LeaverBuster doesn't tick on.

But yeah, the system is really janky. Imo it was put in place like this because of Nemesis Draft and never changed back.

I want it to be even more aggressive, especially as to ranked games.

The team is behind? Rage quit. Don't like my team comp from champ select? Rage quit. Arguing with my own team in chat? Rage quit!

Anyone who leaves a ranked game for more than 5 minutes after connecting to the match should be banned from ranked for a week.

  1. they people who leave in normal, not with bots should be reported and is part of the leavebuster, cause that is annoying having to do any normals with less people in the groupMissFortune

Leaverbuster had it's 15 minutes of fame, it needs to go. I agree it was a good start, but the fact it's way too "aggressive and way too black and white" as touch said perfectly it's just riots way of saying how much it doesn't care about the community.

As someone who has a pretty bad PC I would love to see a change made to Leavebuster. What generally happens to me is my game will crash, I get into a loading screen and then I get disconnected while I'm still in the loading screen, and because of this I'm consistently stuck in 20 minute wait times before I can look for games. I would just love to see at least something for those of us with bad PCs to help with things like this

That's a different problem all in itself. It takes them weeks if ever they do respond to you and there is hardly any feedback to those support tickets, unless Riot wants to say that your claims are unjustified and that their decision is final and you suck, but other wise they really don't help from what I have seen. They just send a generic "someone will be with you shortly" email and then throw you into the "we'll fix this problem never" bin. But I digress. Leaver buster needs fixing yesterday.

Remove the system altogether.

TouchpadExpert1 votes

{quoted}

And?

I'd really like to see this fixed since this system is overly harsh and inaccurate. If it was 100% accurate then I wouldn't be making this thread. But it isn't accurate like Lyte says it is. The readings the system makes to determine leavers from disconnectors needs improvement. And penalizing any leavers regardless of how long they are gone is stupid. The penalty system should kick in if the player in question is gone for 10 minutes or 50% of the game, whichever time is shortest. Leaving as a response to fix lag issues shouldn't be penalized because being gone 5 minutes and returning free of lag is a more useful player than someone who doesn't leave but is plagued by lag issues. Riot needs to either fix their server or fix leaverbuster. Seeing as to how a server costs millions of dollars I think reworking the Leaverbuster system is in their best interest if they do not want to lose customers.

{quoted}

Remove the system altogether.

Leaverbuster has a place in ranked. In ranked there are things to be won and lost. In PvP there are still things to be won or lost (winning nets a slightly higher IP gain) but in bots and in customs it has no place. It needs to be reworked not entirely removed.

The issue here isn't leavers in general. Its leavers who leave for 5 minutes to fix a connection versus leavers who rage quit and never return. The latter demographic is the group of people who should expect the leaverbuster system to take action upon them. The former is a group of people who have lag or connectivity issues and disconnect in an attempt to fix the issues and improve their game play over the course of the rest of the game. When I have connectivity issues I will disconnect and reconnect and then it will all be fine after doing that. I shouldn't be penalized like I intended to have these connectivity issues. I tried to fix them the only way I knew how to fix them. My apologies for putting my team at a disadvantage for 5 minutes but I am back now and 100% capable of performing in a helpful manner rather than feeding the enemy team for an entire game. But you know, Riot logic, I left to spite my team.
