LIES!! I WIN LANE AS JANNA!!! She's currently my most played champ (Gold 4, ~60+ games played with her, 6.0+ KDA)
So yes, part of the function of what she does is to peel/save teammates in lane and out of lane, but the other part is that she provides a soft engage. And to engage for botlane, typically the enemy is either pushing towards your tower and you see your jungler coming, or your ADC has some kind of soft/hard CC or just more damage output.
HOW I engage can be anything of the following:
- I see our jg coming from tri, so I walk up and either bait enemy botlane to stay by taking a few hits
OR
- engage with W for the slow
OR
- engage with exhaust and then Q/W or both at once
OR
- W and wait for enemy to use their escape then Q (or the opposite, Q, wait for escape, then W)
What I do do:
- AA, always, even when they're 3 manning us and I knocked someone up with Q and used my W... as I'm following my AD who is fleeing for their life, I am AAing the shiz out of the closest person to my AD (or the damage dealer/whoever is lowest health, really depends) while running/flying
- if my AD goes past minion wave to trade, shield them
- if my AD is like 1 hit away from killing someone, shield them for the extra AD
- wait until enemy uses gap closer to use Q because an auto-release barely has range (if I still have W, I use it before I Q)
Normally in lane what I don't do:
- Waste mana on poking with W or doing random Qs that everyone who plays Janna seems to like to do (really, they hit nothing). If I W, it's when I know I can get at least 1-2 AAs in there without taking minion wave damage.
- Shield myself when AAing, unless I'm playing against a Draven or Graves or something that hits hard. Also don't go past your own minion wave for the sake of one AA... not worth it most of the time
- Rush ancient coin first. I always start spellthiefs and rarely ever finish it. If I do get a support item, I'd trade spellthiefs in mid/late game for an ancient coin/talisman/whatever it's called
Yeah, hope that helps. Janna IS a very safe support and not as "all-in"y like other supports. But if played right, you can definitely win lane given your AD is at least decent. If you have questions add me and we can talk.
