So is saving up 1600 for it a waste? What should I get instead while saving to sell later for it?

you dont save up for it you happen to be able to afford it

needlessly large rod is a symbol of status, that you got your laner down on his knees and em your bitch and once you recall after a good stomping, you should have enough to buy the rod... if you didnt, you didnt stomp hard enough

a good example of this is bot lane of course the guy who kicked ass goes back to base to buy BF sword the bitch backs to get a pickaxe the BF sword guy didnt "save up" for it lol, he performed fabulously till he happened to have enough for it when it was time to recall

however duo dorans ring is a thing btw, you may see some mid laners buy a 2nd dorans ring doran items, besdies the shield, are the most cost efficient items in the game but they dont build into anything these are the ONLY items you should ever buy that you plan to sell back at a later date

I don't recommend delaying it by buying items that you're only going to sell later. It makes a hell of a power spike if bought early, but there are other choices such as Mana Regen/MPen that have a huge impact when bought early without costing as much in components.

It's easiest to just save up for it when you decide you need a damage spike, as 3 of the best mage items in the game need that needlessly large rod.

Just stay out until you get to 1600, and if you have to back before that then just build the other part of the item
