Armor pen runes vs flat AD runes
I'd like to be off meta and plays ADC's in mid lane. Which of the runes are best for early trading, and does one set "fall off"?

The flat AD will help you to CS better early on, which will lead to better snowballing, whereas armor pen will only start to become useful later on, but only if you're putting a good deal of AD behind it, and even then % armor pen will scale beyond the pen runes anyway, so in this regard flat AD is just far more useful to you.
I like my armor pen ruins on my adcs who are spell oriented and poke alot, like ezreal, sivir, and varus. The reason why is that the armor pen scales well with both your bonus ad and your base damages on your spells/sheen procs on ezreal. You can also take an early ghostblade for really strong poke on varus/sivir.
