How to Read/Analyze Ability Tooltips?

I assumed that I understood ability tooltips well enough. I've been playing this game for a little over a year and a half now, and honestly I had so much to learn about how to play this game in general that I haven't had time to learn much about scaling at all. I understand some very limited basics like what scales off of AP and what scales off of AD. But there are a bunch of different colors that I am not sure how to read.

I also am not sure how to do the "quick math" when trying to decide what items to buy based off of scaling. I've finally broken away from pre-determined builds completely and am now playing with builds as I go to see what can be done differently from the standard build. For instance, I main ADC, but the standard ADC build is just so blah. I'm convinced that there can be more diversity.

But I can't play with this if I don't understand scaling, and how to read that scaling from tooltips.

Is there a good resource I can look at or can anyone explain this scaling to me? I see a lot of posts/articles around that throw numbers and percents around, and I literally have no clue what is meant by them or how they got those numbers.

Its a bit hard for me since with the new UI its harder to see your total AD/AP (in my opinion). But if you see you have 100 AP and an ability has (+25) in the green text next to it (meaning ap damage), it would mean that it has a 0.25 ap scaling.

Sometimes its also just stated in the tooltip like 'taric gains armor based on XX% of his total armor' etc. Some more tips for text color:

Green - AP Scaling Orange - AD Scaling Red - Health Scaling (cost or damage either way) Blue - Mana Scaling Yellow - Armor Scaling White - Cooldown Reduction scaling (often seen with ammo-recharge times in tooltips like teemo and corki)
