Possible Answer to Que Dodging issues (Trolls? DC? Not paying attention?) - May help with Ranked

So as I play (and read the forums), I see more and more the need to be able to que dodge without penalty - especially in low level Ranked solo/duo que.

I may have a solution to this, but it's one of those "so simple, there's a reason it hasn't been done" things.

Why don't we have a "leave" button during the champ select, which greys several seconds after the last champ is picked so that you get a chance to decide if you want to play with your team? It could work like the "reroll" in ARAM where you can only use it two or three times in a set period, and is slowly replenished over time.

This way, if you use your dodges smartly, you will have at least one for that time when: a) one of your team mates decides to troll b) you realize at the last second that you didn't want to play this que (or a friend comes online and you decide to play with them instead just as the last person picks) c) you find yourself matched with someone who trolled a previous game d) your team doesn't pay attention to composition e) etc...

Thing is, especially with ranked, there are times where you really need to dodge (if anything, for the sanity of the summoners involved). Ranked isn't "fun" because you are always forced to play every game whether you want to after champ select or not. You are forced to play with outspoken, self-named trolls or get penalized for not doing so. Sometimes honest mistakes are made in champ select (like first pick calling top while banning, then picking Vayne, and I take Cait and lock in way before I see in the chat that he called ADC instead - so guess who went top and almost won lane ;) ). I feel like if summoners were given even a small window of freedom to leave an unpleasent or unwanted que, League would be just a little more fun.

Yes, I see how this might open up to trolls forcing people to use their dodges so they don't have to, but people already do that in Ranked. I've had someone literally troll pick a champ as 3rd pick, then scream "dodge! you better dodge!" the entire rest of the champ select, just to tell us once we got in game that they had a friend come online and really wanted to play with them instead but didn't want the penalty. So this issue would not be new.

Thoughts?

This would lead to too much dodging. "Oh, I don't like that my team mate picked Teemo top. Bye." Now all jokes aside, Teemo is a valid champion that can do pretty well, but people will dodge because they see certain champions. "Oh we have all AD, bye." "Oh, So and so was just heavily nerfed and you're playing him? Bye."

It would encourage selective playing. There would be no penalty to leaving for any reason. It also ruins moods. People tend to like being one of the first picks to get the role they desire. I personally like being 1st-3rd pick. I don't think anything annoys me more than getting my desired role in ranked, picking a champ I'm really good with, then some asshat dodges and my next queue I'm last pick.

Also, if I have vendetta's against certain champions, that would led me to dodge. "Oh they picked Fizz? Bye." Same with bans. Don't like the bans? Bye.

Overall, keep ranked as it is. Trolls exist, yes. It's an internet community, shit happens. You'll lose LP, promotions, etc, but they're not THAT common.

Oh, and a side note, it would increase trolling. Say I was a troll, and I was 4th pick and wanted mid, but someone else got mid. I'll just lock in a champion, "Mid or feed" and just wait to reap the rewards as someone else dodges and then my next queue hopefully place higher. If not, rinse and repeat.

Not sure what rank you are placed in, but this happens all the time already in Bronze 5 (hello three champ selects to get into the first game of the day). I am thinking that limiting the number of dodges to something like 1 or 2 and then not letting them replenish for maybe a week, or possibly on a count of how many games you've played (get one dodge every ten ranked games, for instance) would help.

The problem isn't the trolling or the rage dodging. That already happens. The problem is the innocent people who get stuck on the receiving end with no escape that's not punishable.

And sometimes the innocent just have to take a hit here and there. I placed in Gold 4, and I hardly experience these issues. Having people just dodging here and there would cause so many issues and lost games.

I wonder if the leniency of this new system would allow for harsher penalties if you dodge without the free pass.

IE: I've used all my dodges, and then I decide to dodge once more just because - immediate low-cue priority.

It also hit me that this idea may save some people with unusual internet problems - not the chronic ones, but the ones who rarely have problems. If you disconnect in champ select it treats it as a dodge taken, so you in essence get two or three free internet issue passes before it starts to hurt (hopefully enough time to fix whatever problem you're having).

EDIT: I meant to say that yes, I get that (more than you could ever imagine because I'm RARELY first or second pick, and when I am, someone dodges). But I would be less annoyed knowing that someone used a free pass because they don't dodge much, or knowing that if they didn't have a free pass, the penalty would be so much harsher.

How about this as a compromise?

FYI, I'm not deliberately being controversial here - you provide the perfect devil's advocate for this system, and I'm bouncing ideas on how to tune it to be viable.

But if you think about it, there are 10 players in a game. So highest count wise, that's 20 free passes to dodge. Now multiply that by the thousands in queue at one point, and you just have a constant stream of people that will, honestly, most likely dodge for whatever reasons with their free passes, and it'd become a struggle to get an actual game going.

This logic doesn't really make sense to me - maybe I'm just dense. People already dodge/disconnect. You have not, in this counter argument, considered the free "oops" pass verses the higher penalty for dodging without the pass.

There are times in Normal que where it takes almost an hour to get a game started. Again, this is not a new issue.

But they dodge/dc with a known penalty, and this penalty prevents most people from dodging. Only a select few dodge. A free pass means anyone can do it any time. If you think it takes an hour to get a game started now, even though it doesn't, at most maybe 6-7 minutes, then you'll hate how long a game will take to get started with the oops pass.

Yes this option could be trolled, but only very rarely. If you only got the option to leave once per 10 wins/games (to throw out random numbers), it wouldn't be a big trolling threat.

i think this could work. there are so many times i have wanted to dodge because of stupid bans/trolls

I think a modification of this would have a reasonable chance of success (but it still won't happen). Allow players to leave, but only before the first champion is picked. Hopefully by this time most of the vocal trolls would have revealed themselves, and you can get out before starting what would be a miserable game. There would have to be a severe limit on how often you could dodge, though. Perhaps a maximum of once a week or every 5 games, whichever is longer.

I thought of a shorter frame for the dodge time, and had originally thought when the banning phase is over. Sometimes the trolls don't come out until you lock in your role as first pick and they start screaming that's what they wanted. But, more often than not you are right, and they are pretty evident when their requested bans don't get banned.

The second reason for the longer wait time was the thought of friends coming online at the last possible second. This usually happens to me around 3rd pick. I know you can't please everyone though.

Edit: Also the thought of just accidentally picking the wrong champion (like my Cait/Vayne scenario in my original post) - would be good to have a dodge for that lol.

Also consider the other side. It's so frustrating when the draft is fully completed, you're happy with your team and your matchup, and then bam someone dodges. The worst part is that it isn't just once every now and then, it's that it happens multiple times while searching for just one game. Like KGB said, this would lead to too much abuse. "Oh, the enemy team counterpicked me? Lol dodge.", forcing all 10 players back into the que, with no compensation for the people who've sat through the que for an hour already looking for a game. This is really the problem with finding a support or jungler in team builder. "This team doesn't fit my exact specifications? Nope, I'm out."

Dodging is fine as it is, I do not even want to read the above. It is perfeclty fine.

Please don't comment if you don't read. Thanks.

It would have to be disabled for the higher ranks (Challengers, Masters, possibly Diamond).

But aside from my minor nitpicking, yeah this should work pretty darn good.

Nova Skye1 votes

I thought of that too. For ranked it would definitely make sense to double - but then, I have to ask - are there issues with trolling that high up?

There kinda already is no penalty for dodging so I don't think we need a change like this. It only lowers your LP, a.k.a. your fake rating that doesn't actually do anything.
