Depends on the match-up, the team comp, and the enemy team comp.

AP Sona brings the hurt with her Q aa lichbane combo, and her W lichbane helps win trades. Problem is getting into aa range first. If someone sees your passive up, they're probably going to make sure to either zone or poke you before you get into aa range to discourage it, or at least win the trade.

Sona excels in late-game teamfights, and full AP will mean decent shields and damage.

Problem is this:

Sona has assloads of synergy with support items. item 3504 item 3190 item 3222 item 3092 item 3050 are all really good on her. Building full AP on her benefits her ratios, but doesn't benefit her team overall as much. Sona is the aura mage, and she gets a bang out of her buck with a lot of support items. Playing her sheerly for burst is like building an ADC full AD but no attack speed. Sure, it's damage-y, but it's not always the best thing.

You can also play utility mages midlane instead too.

So is it competitively viable? Probably... not all that much. Maybe a comfort pocket pick, kind of like Poppy in the LCS.

Is it viable enough to try? Go have fun, don't see why you shouldn't. "Supports can do more than support," you know.

YES!!!! I am completely a fan of AP mid Sona. I main Sona support, and most games I have to actively try to not ks my carry (though it does happen quite often). Going AP mid, I can let her true power loose with damage items and not feel guilty. And it is insanely fun to let her hair down, so to speak. And I like that her best support features are not wasted since in late game everyone is all bunched up anyway for teamfights, making her one of the most useful mids to have on the team.

Of course, there are drawbacks to her in a solo lane, like her wave clear is almost non-existent, and certain champs I will lose a trade to almost every time I step up. But I feel every role in any lane has challenges and counters, so... ~~shrugs~~

Oh also, a mid Sona will shut a Kat down. SHUT A KAT DAOOOOOWN.
