How do you play Skarner?

Just bought Skarner today and have been trying out different runes/masteries used by highly ranked players who play him a lot but I've had some pretty bad games with him for the 5 games I used him right after getting him. So can someone explain how I should be playing him?

Should I try to be ganking pre-6 with him? What runes/masteries are best used when jungling with him? What items are core on him? (I've noticed a lot of people always build Lizard Elder and Trinity Force on him then tanky items after that) In team fights how should I be fighting? Ult the adc or the person with the most CC? Any general tips that wouldn't be obvious to people who hardly see him played?

Any advice would be helpful since I want to do well with him and I'm having a harder time doing so than other champions I've picked up recently.

Skarner loves attack speed. He scales with it better than he does AD. I use AS marks, Armor seals, Scaling MR glyphs, and movement speed quints.

I also use 21/6/3 in the masteries. A little unconventional, but I like the bonus movement speed from the Utility tree. In Offense, take Blade Weaving and Spell Weaving, as Skarner is just an ability spamming, auto attacking monster. The only monster killing mastery I take is Butcher - Skarner has an extremely fast clear time, so you won't need the defensive jungle masteries.

For items, rush Elder Lizard and Trinity Force. If you need early tankiness, build Sunfire Cape after the Elder Lizard, then Trinity Force. Skarner is a fast moving fighter who excels at dueling and picking enemies out, so build around that concept. If you want more sticking power, you can get Iceborn Gauntlet instead of Triforce.

I also typically get Boots of Swiftness, but the other defensive boots can and should be built when needed (Ninja Tabi VS Fed ADC, etc).

In teamfights, you run headlong for a squishy, and ult them. Pull them backwards. If they don't have Flash, they'll probably die. After that, just try to hit as many people with your Q as possible and keep W on cooldown. Use E to catch people trying to run away, you won't need to use it when barring down on someone since your Q comes off CD fast enough to stack your passive quickly.

If you see someone with 3 stacks of Crystal Venom, auto attack them if you can. When dueling, just spam Q and W, and use E when they try to run. Make sure you try and stack your passive to 3 before using your ult when dueling, as it'll proc the bonus damage.

Pre-6 ganks are possible, best if they're pushed up or in the middle (Curl around through the tribush). His E and passive make his ganks good, but his laner needs to bring the damage - Skarners damage is very high when sustained, but his burst isn't that great. Don't do early tower dives, since the build I'm suggesting doesn't give tankiness.

I'm not sure if it's optimal but when I play Skarner I use: Runes: MS Quints, AtkSpd Reds, Armor Seals, MR or CDR Glyphs Masteries: 21/9/0 or 9/21/0 depending on my team's needs Core Item Build: item 3111item 3209item 3025item 3068item 3102item 3143

Early game, I will mostly farm and make the occasional gank if I see someone overextended or a countergank opportunity. After I hit 6, I being ganking whenever my ultimate is off cooldown and farm in between ganks.

My build is pretty tanky and is focused on providing a consistent mixed damage source in teamfights. Between the Q AoE, Iceborn AoE, Sunfire Cape, and Elder Lizard burn on my Q, I do a lot of damage when nearby so it's dangerous to ignore me for long. I'm also tanky and have a spammable slow for peeling and chasing.

I'm not a fan of the Elder Lizard -> Trinity Force build because I find it is too squishy for how I like to play. This may be a good build if you are experienced with him, but I'm not so I prefer the tankier variation.

In teamfights, you pretty much have to decide what is more important: protecting your carries or killing their carries. If your carries are fed or they die to quickly to people diving, you usually want to protect them. If the enemy carries are fed, you want to try and ult them if you can, but you have to be careful since you may be heavily punished for diving so far.

Well, when I play Skarner, Usually I use my Q, W, and E abilities to clear the jungle (if that's where I choose to go) as well as usually Smite for the larger buffs, and my Ultimate (or my R ability) for ganks or if I need to target a specific enemy. I like to get items that help in tankiness, or clear speed.
