Should I buy Katarina or Orianna?

Elephant888··2 votes·2,797 views

Basically what the title says. I want to find an ideal mid champ that can carry me out of silver, if i can properly play her. I think i've narrowed the choices down to these two champs, but i cant really decide which one will be more effective to carry out of Silver League. Pls help. If you guys have any more suggestions on good champs, pls comment. Ty :D.

And if I am in the wrong board section pls tell me :3.

I suggest Ahri.

Katarina... you can carry hard with her, but you will find yourself getting bored. She's extremely easy to play despite looking flashy and she's just got a toxic and boring kit imo. Smart players will shut her down as you get into higher ELO anyways. Especially if you pick her early in the draft.

Orianna is currently bad with the season 5 mana regen. Used to love her but with assassins (zed in particular) being common, it's not very safe to pick a mana hungry, immobile, farm champion in mid lane.

Ahri gives you teamfight potential, pick potential, engage/initiation, and tons of waveclear. She's everything you could want in a mid laner right now, especially since she doesn't die easily to assassins like Zed since you can just dash away when he ults you (or charm him and murder his arse).

I'd suggest Morgana mid. She has a really safe laning phase, can easily catch out opponents with her bind, easy farming, and she can deal a lot of damage during fights because of high ratios and base damages. She doesn't really have a lot of sustained damage later in the game, but she provides a lot of CC and burst damage. It can be pretty hard to stop her from farming and she's good for teamfights in small locations, like the jungle or dragon area.

Just find a champ you really really like, and main them. Even if it takes a long time to find the champ, it will be worth it.

Thnx dude, never considered morg before. How do you think she does in the uncoordinated realm that is soloq?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Honestly, pretty good for soloqueue. She has a lot of damage and utility, so she can easily set up plays for her team. It's kinda of like Amumu or Thresh; if your team sees you land your ultimate or your Q, they usually know that they can follow up for an easy kill. Zhonya's Hourglass makes it very difficult for your enemies to prevent or interrupt your ultimate and buys you time for your team to follow up, and she has great base damage and scaling so it can really hurt with some Magic Penetration and AP. She's good for ganking as well, since her can easily push the wave and roam to another lane with her Q and/or ultimate to lock down the target for her allies.

However, I believe that her strongest point is probably her consistency. She can farm very quickly and safely after she gets a few levels and some AP, sitting back far from the minion wave and using her Black Shield to walk away from most attempted ganks. Her damage is still very high, so you can often pick up an easy kill at level 6, especially if you burned your opponents Flash beforehand. Just get a couple Doran's Rings early game for mana sustain and you are pretty much set if you manage your mana appropriately.

If you want to see someone experienced playing her, I'd probably recommend InvaderXive since she is one of his main champions.

Also, please reply to my post next time so I get a notification for your response. I only checked this thread against out of curiousity and didn't know you responded to me beforehand.

So my best bet would be either morg or Ori? or maybe just any AP caster with good utility. How do they compare with carrying soloq in silver to other roles/niches such as splitpusher solo top trynd, or AD assassin like zed?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Use 'Reply' instead of 'Quote' next time. Less cluttered.

Anyways, you'd be best with a champion who you enjoy and who suits your playstyle. Morgana is my preferred and probably my most consistent mid lane champion, so I would definitely support her. She can carry quite well through protecting her team, arranging picks, early roams with her ultimate, and supplying great AoE damage.

If you are looking for a different AP caster with high utility, I'd recommend trying Lissandra. Good against assassins (Zed's popular at the moment and she can counter him pretty easily), good initiation, and high AoE damage and CC.

Honestly, I'd recommend picking a few champions you'd potentially like to main, play a few games as each one and see whether you like them.

lol, i already play zed whenever i get the chance (not often though, SO MANY BANS) and was just looking at a lissandra guide a few minutes ago.

"Adequate minds think similarly" is probably more appropriate. :P

I'd vote for Ori, if you're looking to carry yourself "Out of silver and beyond". Kat is decent in low ELO(Bronze/Silver specifically, from what I'm told.) But in the higher leagues people are much more careful to not feed her, and save their Point+Click CC to shut her down the moment she jumps.

Ori, on the other hand, has a ton of outplay potential even at a higher level of play.

To be fair, I don't play much of either one(Though I do dabble in both.) If you're gonna spend the time getting good with one of them, it might as well be the one that can carry you the highest.

The problem is that i tend to switch focus WAAAY too much when trying to main someone. I like kat, her kit seems nice and she can snowball like crazy, but she is always permabanned in my que. The problem is that i will not be able to hang on to the same champion for very extended periods of time, which is why i am considering Tryndamere solotop, pretty ez and a 'free pass' IMO.

The reason i am asking for a good carry mid laner is because i am certain i will not be getting top very often lol. I know mid is contested too, but better expand your pool, right?

Sounds like a good plan. Mid is my main role(In fact, I'm in the boat of maining a permaban - I main Akali), and having a little diversity there is always nice.

The problem with Trynd top is that Darius is currently in style, and his bleed basically makes it so that even if you get a kill on him with Trynd, it's just a kill trade since you'll probably bleed out after your ult. But into many matchups it's not a bad character to main.

I just wouldn't recommend Kat, both for the permaban that you mentioned, and the fact that high ELO knows how to shut her down much easier. But if you just want a champ to get out of silver, she's not a bad one to master.

orianna has a lot more potential. you can do great as kat, but she has the greater potential to be completely shut down, whereas orianna is less likely to be outright owned.

if i had to choose between the two i would choose ori but if it was my choice i personlay love playing karthus but to each man/woman his/her own.

Go Ori. Kat is easily shut down, but will soon get nerfs from Bronzies bitching about her being OP.

No more 3 second fear (now 1.5 with tenacity), no more double bounce E, reduced damage with E, reduced damage with W, and reduced damage with R. Such sad.

Elephant8881 votes

so far, i'm seeing lot of good press for ori :D. How do you think she compares to morg, utility and burstwise?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Orianna is probably a better pick for sustained damage and team-utility (her ultimate is great for followup on initiators or leading into AoE burst, shield + resistances, slow and MS buff, vision from ball). She can bully some champions early using her shield and passive while scaling into a strong mid-late game champion. Her ultimate is easier to use at a range, letting your team initiate, or following up an allies initiation. She requires more micromanagement, but can provide a good source of mobility, sustained damage, and protection during teamfights.

Morgana is probably a better pick for burst damage, AoE lockdown, and her E is great in protect-the-carry compositions or against teams with a lot of CC. Her sustained damage is pretty low, but her ultimate can chunk enemy teams and lock them down while her Q and W kill a target. Her ultimate can be a bit more difficult to position correctly, however it can easily lock down a grouped or confined team (such as in jungle corridors or dragon/baron pit). I believe that she is much better at arranging picks if she can land her Q, since she can easily follow up with her ultimate for lockdown.

Well, i used to have an interest in morgana, and bought her a few months before, for a trial, but discontinued her after a while. Maybe i could pick her up again along with ori and use both together? They both do fill in the same niche, as an AP AOE CC mage. Morg does have the advantage in picks, because they are pretty common in the uncoordinated land of SoloQ. How does this niche compare to other carry roles in the league, such as ADC or Solotop?

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Champions like Morgana and Orianna are good at teamfighting in the mid game and can still provide a lot of utility for their team even if they fall behind. When they get ahead, their burst can severely chunk entire teams and lockdown the enemy team for their allies to follow up. When they fall behind, they still provide utility and can focus on arranging picks or protecting their allies. They are also pretty strong mid-game and make great allies during dragon- or baron-fights.

It's really hard to tell how their niche compares to other carry roles since they go about it differently. Top lane splitpushers (like Tryndramere) carry primarily by creating pressure for the team, getting strong enough that the enemy team needs multiple champions to reliably handle them which gives their team advantages elsewhere on the map. ADCs primarily carry through their damage output, dealing massive sustained damage if left alone during fights, and push towers very quickly if undisturbed. Utility Mages typically carry through their CC and damage in teamfights.

It's not really that annoying. I just couldn't think of a reason for you to keep quoting my entire post.

The problem that i see with morg is that the high mobility 100-0 assassins will easily dodge her q, completely destroying her dmg output. She is strong lategame, but with the new 100-0 assassin meta, i dont think she is as good as ori. Do you guys have any other mid laners that could be good in the meta? Dont be limited to the options i gave in the top.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Eh, against mobile champions you can usually just play back on Morgana. If they want to engage on you they have to pass your minion wave and most assassin's gapclosers have a predictable ending location which you can use to bind them. If you are really worried about them dodging your Q, you can usually wait until they use their mobility tool to harass or trade with you, chase them down, ult them, and bind them while they are stunned.

If you want a good AoE CC mage against assassins, I'd recommend Lissandra. Her poke early game is very strong against melee champions and her ultimate can serve to shut down assassins either by ulting herself (to place herself in stasis and negate the damage) or ulting the assassin (stunning them). Her ultimate is targetted too, so they can't actually dodge it, and you have your W for followed CC.

Elephant8881 votes

the problem in my eyes with lissandra is that she doesn't do as much dmg as other tanky cc casters, like Ryze or Brand, though she does have quite a but more cc than them, she will be doing minimal amounts of dmg in a fight, mostly cc, which can be accomplished better with other mages.

EndlessSorcerer1 votes

Her ratios and base damages are pretty good, however you have to keep in mind that all of her moves are AoE and have CC, which can be very powerful. She's great of chunking teams and locking down enemies.

Orianna fits into most team comps and is overall one of the safest picks in the game. Kat is extremely high risk and high reward, but relies quite a bit on her team to frontline. Ori is a better pick
