Specifically, I was playing Swain in a game. And they had a near full AP team. (Vlad top, Lux mid, Morg Supp, even a Corki ADC) So instead of rushing Zonyas, I went into an Abysal Scepter right after ROA. Everyone on their team called me an idiot. I mean, I know Zonya's is core on Swain, but I think getting that magic resist a little bit earlier would have been more effective. Thoughsts?
I woulda done the same thing. Abyssal is nice against even just double AP; as long as Corki isn't fed and building full AD, there is no rush on Zhonyas
Were you still diving into the middle of their team? If so you were playing as if you had Zhonya's when you didn't have it, and that would be fairly stupid.
If you were playing more conservatively and only went in when you could survive it with your other survival items you can safely ignore them.
I would've went ROA then Rylais the Spirit Visage.
I like spirit visage better. Or rabadons. Abyssal scepter is a late game item because you need to be tanky enough to get the full use out of it. If your team is all AD besides you then yeah, that item isn't the greatest. But if you and Lux were to swap sides then that item would have been great as it would have benefited more than just you.

Zhonyas is nice for the active, but if you don't need it you don't need it.

And even if certain items are core, they don't always need to be rushed. ADC's, for example, can delay LW if they're against a low armor team in favor of a fourth item bloodthirster.
If you had enough gold for zhonya you should have went for zhonya
