How the fuk do you play against Veigar?

Thank god this champ's actually not popular because he's probably one of the few champions I have no idea how to play against as any role.

He can usually always insta-gib my squishies and if he's even a little ahead can insta-gib tanks as well. It's hard for me to go in on him as an initiator because his big-ass stun is like the entire width of the lane, and even if I manage to get to him, my team's probably way too scared to go in until his big-ass circle is down and by then I'm probably dead.

It's even harder for me to play against him as a carry again because his big ass stun is gigantic. And of course if you get CC'd you get gibbed.

I know people be like "he's so weak if he doesn't land the stun on the edge", but honestly if he just puts the big-ass circle over anyone, what are you supposed to do? Sit around in it and wait for his team to kill you or just walk into the back wall and die anyway?...

He also has like pretty decent waveclear and is relatively hard to gank because again, he has his big-ass circle and builds everyone's favorite item, Zhonyas Whoreglass.

Can't effectively push against him because if he lands 1 big-ass circle, someone dies. Can't really split push either, because some nigga's always going to get caught by his big-ass circle and gibbed.

Edit: I don't play mid very often. I know there's ways you can kinda shut him down in lane, but I'm asking more about how you play against him as a team once laning phase is over.

I play Veigar sometimes, and a champion that can range harass me early is my worst nightmare. Even with his passive, Veigar is very mana hungry early on. If he wants to farm his Q (And he does!), he's going to want to save his mana to cast baleful strike for last hits. Poke and harass him when he goes in for those last hits, and force him to either back off, or expend that precious mana trying to harass you back.

Basically, force him to make choices he doesn't want to make. Instead of "Q and get a last hit!", make his choices "Q and get a last hit, but take a bunch of damage for it", and "Q my opponent in the hopes that they'll back off". Neither of those two choices are good sustainable options for Veigar pre-6.

Funny you posted this. I JUST finished a game vs veiger, I was playing Zilean

Both our champs have very little counter play, so we just repeatedly killed each other in lane

I had 3 kills before 10 minutes...

There's really not much to do but try and bait out the stun and hope you're outside the circle... Such a bs champ

One of the core problems with Veigar is his inherently low counterplay. I love playing him, but when he's ahead he's completely oppressive. I find as a veiger player that I struggle most against aggressive early laners. If you can force veigar out of lane or kill him a couple of times early he has a very minimal fallback pattern and will usually just end up useless in the mid-late game. Also, banshee's veil helps a lot because his stun when used properly has a much longer range than any of his skills. Furthermore, an early mercury tread rush can catch a veigar off guard if they only put 1 point into their stun cage.

For me, the biggest point is level 6 and understanding his burst and cd's. Assuming you are playing another mage vs veigar and go chalice first, if you can get item 3028 pre-6 you will survive his full combo. At this point he has nothing and if you can survive one more q, go in hard. His q will be back up in about 3 seconds true, but his other spells will be on cd so he has no stun or other large burst. Take advantage of every missed stun and his relatively long cd's. If you do get behind, make sure you have enough mr to survive his combo or roam hard and take small jungle camps.

AD-scaling tanky champs seem to do well against him in teamfights, like Jarvan/Wukong/Vi

Then push lane in like you would against a Nasus, the speed that the turret takes down creeps reduces the amount of creeps he can farm with his Q.
