Adc first items

So I played adc last game, and was told that IE into statik shiv start isn't a good item combo for Cait. Now, I'm a jungle main so I'm pretty unfamiliar with adc builds, but I would like to know for when I have to adc in the future. Should I start BT, or was IE ok? Should I go BT into IE? And any other build tips for adc would be appreciated, if you have the time. Just trying to become a better player, one little piece at a time.

(As a side note, the two adcs I can play fairly well are cait and graves, so I'm mostly only interested in these two)

Against 2+ Tanks: item 3031 item 3006 item 3046 item 3153 item 3035 item 3026 Against Tank/Bruiser: item 3072 Against All Squishies: item 3142

Only get Shiv over PD if you're behind.

The most important things to do as an ADC are CS, not die, and group to push turrets. Don't overextend bot when you can just go get mid's turret first with the mid laner.

I used to main Cait and I find that a good item build for her would be to start with the IE and then rush right into phantom because with phantom it gives you better dot since you get more crits in with the higher crit rate of the phantom dancer. The only time that static shiv would be applicable is if you're behind then you would want to build the avarice blade to help get a bit of extra gold to help catch up. After phantom I would recommend BT if you're fed or a LW if you're even or behind since it'll help you kill them faster since at this point if you're ahead then your opponents won't have too much armour so it's better to focus on survivability with a BT. If you're behind then your opponents will have armour so you need the LW to do damage to them. After that you buy the one you didn't buy before and last item will all depend on circumstance.

Infinity Edge, Phantom Dancer, Berserker's Greaves, Bloodthirster or Last Whisper, then the other one, and the last one is situational (Either GA, or Mercurial Scimitar).

Most ADCs do not build BT first, unless you're someone like Kalista (But you should build Blade of the Ruined King on her first, actually, not BT).

Most ADCs build Infinity Edge first, followed by the attack speed/crit boost (Phantom Dancer or Shivv).

I used to like getting Shivv because I built into it with Avarice Blade, but Phantom Dancer, overall, on most of the ADCs I play now (Sivir, Jinx), is better, because they both have their own versions of waveclear.
