Damage Alistar?

Hey there, Master Fledgling here! A happy new year and all that :O)

So, straight to it -- Alistar got an update recently so he doesn't look like bull ... well, you know. Now that he is visually appealing to me, I want to play him more (I'm shallow -- sue me.) However, while I play him quite well as a support, I want to take him top and, let's lower our voices lest they remove his passive completely (You might say they sent his passive 'out to pasture'), jungle with him still. In both positions, he is supposed to be tanky, so I'd better start off with some armor or health ---

Oh, hello there, 70% damage reduction at level 6!!! You sexy beast you!

Nevermind. This is Alistar's prime (rib) time to shine! I can build him straight AP or AD now, if I feel like it. But, with nothing scaling from AD and some very sad AP scaling, which route do I take? ... I've seen the mad(cow)ness of AP Mid Alistar and how well THAT goes, but not a whole lot of AD.

Suggestions? Tips? Tricks? Any more Cow puns I missed that would make Phreak proud?

Thanks,

-MF

One more. Alistar is ready to (g)raze his foes!!!

All I know is, be prepared for a hard Alistar nerfs, as it would surface the more Ali is being played as an AD/AP champ.

want to leave your opponents saying "Holy cow!", then listen up!

First things first, you always want to prioritize building accordingly to your opponents. Especially because you're main role is going to be tanking, but this doesn't mean you can't tank without doing tons of DPS too! Lets get started with the lane phase, typically I like to run flash TP for my summoners. Most likely I'm starting with Flask because my mana cost are too high to kill anyone in lane anyways, so I like to prioritize getting as much farm as possible in lane. Most likely you will lose in farm because Alistars mana cost make him a really tough laner! After getting some gold I always like to pick up a sheen first and rush mobi boots second. I try to make best use of alistars amazing CC and gank potential. So most likely I will max Q to shove the wave while taking some harras, no problem though E and flask will heal me back up. After the mobi boots you want to shove lane and try to place deep wards in the enemy jungle, and try to gank mid as often as possible. Usually this results in a few kills and at about the 15 minute mark I can afford trinity force! After trifroce you have a pretty big powerspike. At this time you can abandon top lane and group with your team, or go for a solo kill in your lane. Next you want to grab two tanky items, which ever best fit the situation. Now you have triforce mobis two tank items, next you want to grab yourself a static shiv! After all these items you are truly an unstoppable force! you deal tons of damage and tank a lot! If you need armor for a tank item i suggest frozen heart for the extra CDR and MANA! gl on the rift summoner

Actually, in regards to AD Alistar, look closely at his Ultimate.

AD Alistar > AP Alistar

Yeah yeah, no AD scaling, look... those ap ratios are bad. Once you blow those spells you do nothing as AP alistar. AD Alistar is actually viable because no matter how much squishy damage you build you can tank for a certain amount of time with your ultimate. It can be enough time for you to kill carries as AD Alistar if you don't get peeled off. You can use your spells for utility as AD, your utility and damage isn't tied up together...

The bonus AD on your ult helps you scale with crit/attack speed/ ect. Your auto attacks are your damage.

You know AD Alistar top lane was actually a thing last season when they last buffed Alistar? He received a minor nerf though. And the top lane meta is now very obnoxious with Gnar/Lissandra ect...

Your power as a top lane doesn't really come from your 1v1 potential, but your ability to set up devastating ganks when your jungler comes. you can knock them into fatal positions especially if you have flash, or you can turret dive using your ultimate. Later on in the game your CC abilities are very nice...

In melee matchups you can peel enemies off you a lot with both W and Q. That can be annoying for some opponents who lack range poke. Range poke is annoying tho but if it's a squishy poke champion you can set up lethal ganks...
