Tips against Master Yi?

Ok, so recently i've seen a lot of Master Yi's, and I sort of know how he works and stuff, but it seems like no matter what I can't seem to beat Master Yi. Whether I'm a bursty mage, an adc, healing support, or a tank, I just can't find a way to counter him. I've been told to build thornmail, (Which I do) but it barely helps at all, and even when he doesn't build lifesteal it still doesn't seem to affect much.... Is there any tips anyone can give me on countering him?

Hi, Master Yi player here. Lemme just tell you what pisses me off the most.

  1. Superior DPS. This really only applies if the Yi in question isn't fed, but there are in fact a number of champions who can DPS so hard that they ultimately take down Yi's health long before Yi can take their health down. Example: An equally fed Raid Boss Trundle, or Full Damage Tryndamere.
  2. Anything that stops mobility. Alpha Strike is treated as a movement ability, so snares are surprisingly effective against Yi. Also, depending on what stage of the game it is and whether or not Yi is fed, Silences are equally as devastating. Stuns and Knock Ups are effective tools as well, but I like highlighting Snares and Silences because they tend to last much longer than their hard CC counterparts, and a Master Yi exposed for long amounts of time without Alpha Strike tends to result in a dead Yi.
  3. Interrupt channels for Meditate. A good Yi is going to meditate so quickly that they can just negate the damage of one of your abilities and immediately get back to fighting, so this tip isn't useful against some of the best Yis. Most of the weaker Yis however simply focus on the healing aspect of Meditate instead of the damage negate portion, and so allow themselves to get dangerously low before Meditating. If you have an ability that interrupts channels, most of the less experiences Yis out there won't be able to survive.
  4. Supports and Tanks ganging up with carries. This is basically a modified rule of point 1, if a carry is standing next to someone with CC, that's annoying. Yi can 1v1 people with ease 9 times out of 10, but oh man does he hate it when the number of fighters in a given moment exceeds 2.

Also, I highly recommend that unless your skill has a lot of range or has no cast animation, don't fire it until after you see Yi use Alpha Strike. Any Yi worth his salt will simply use Alpha Strike's invulnerability to negate your damage.

Master Yi is very susceptible to Hard CC. Therefore slows and those sorts won't do much against him. Good Master Yi's will time your hard CC cast to his q. Reason is, his q is instant, while most Hard CCs are cast timers. He dodges your hard CC and goes ahead and recks your face. So ideally, even though you have Hard CC, wait for him to cast his alpha strike, or Q, and then go ahead and fight him. Most Master Yi's will build glass cannon. If he decides to build fighter, well, lets hope you have a tank that can sustain and peel.

Ryze with just item 3027 and item 3020 .....let him alpha in and just pop ult, runic prison, Q,E,W and done he'll barely make a dent unless he has a huge lead.

Any hard CC. Roots and snares won't affect him due to his ult, and if you shut him down early he becomes useless mid/late game.

Leona Lissandra Annie are some decent choices.

  1. Play Teemo
  2. Press Q
  3. ???
  4. Profit Also, IF you happen to buy a Thornmail as Teemo, you will most likely have some magic penetration, which works with Thornmail, so good luck :D

And if you can survive his ult and Q, wait for him to jump on you with ult on before using your escapes mechanisim cause most of the time this will result in you wasting you escapes + flash and resulting in a yi still catchin up with you. Unless of course he's really far dont let him catch up on you

Thornmail works better if you have magic penetration. Most Yi's won't have a lot of magic resist, so if you have the right runes and items like item 3136 item 3020 item 3001 , you will make him kill himself a lot quicker.

Otherwise hard cc and a good focus from your team. If he's trying to teamfight, have your tank/support save their cc for when he jumps in. Make sure your team focuses him when he's stunned. He has a tiny health pool, so he should go down fast.

If he's trying to split push, you need someone that can either duel him 1v1, or play tower defense and waveclear so he can't take your towers.
