Hi,
Nocturne is a champ that I really like, especially his ult. However when I play him, I have a lot of trouble being relevant in teamfights. What is his role in teamfights? I can't burst carries fast enough without dying and I can't tank well either. No real CC (the fear takes too much time to start). The only good thing I can do is use my ult just to rob vision and hope it's enough.
So how is he supposed to be played/built when teamfights happen?

Nocturne can be built a ton of ways; i've had success going warrior's enchantment plus Yumuus (you win almost all early trades this way), then going tank items (plus a bork if you're fed).
It can be hard to know what to do for teamfights; it's best if your team has a primary initiator, so you can dive on the AP or AD carry and take them out. I've had some success as the primary initiator if the enemy carry has low mobility. For example, i once played a game where the enemy Karthus was fed, so whenever we had 5 v 5 stand-offs i made it my purpose to dive for Karthus whenever i had vision of him. this kept him from focusing in the rest of the team while i assassinated him and the rest of my team could do their thing.
So basically, your ult is one of the best 'dives' in the game, so use it to get to one of their carries. You have to make sure your team is in position to follow you though, or else you've just died a glorious death.
If you want to stand in the middle of a teamfight you need to build him more bruiser/tank (as suggested, try BotRK and/or Hydra and/or triforce, then tanky, kinda like Jax usually builds). AS is good on him; he heals for each enemy hit by his passive aoe, and the faster you attack the faster it goes off.
If you save his ult he's really good for counter-engage -- stay back and peel whoever tries to dive your backline with your fear, then ult a squishy. You can also finish off people who are running away. You can also split push and use your ult to jump into the fight if the enemy tries to force a 5v4.
Have you tried getting a Statikk Shiv on him? And a Hydra? Those make his burst much better.
RWE combo. Q speeds up autos. Triforce or BotRK make really nice burst aids.
