So, LuLu mains...

...or just anyone that enjoys playing her.

I spent a lot of time playing her this week in my fashion of learning all the support champs. She's tons of fun, has a good kit and is a monster in teamfights. But I had a few questions for those of you more familiar with her.

My success rate wasn't very high with her, due to a number of reasons (most of which were my fault). My biggest problem was dying often. Her squishiness led me to feed a few times, and I often had a lot of trouble staying relevant until we could teamfight and I could really shine. I started with an aggro build, AP runes and Masteries, which often led to me popping faster than a teemo shroom. I eventually settled on MPen marks/AP Quints and the usual armor/MRes, with a 0/13/13 mastery setup (I'm only 26).

So, my general questions...

  1. How do you play in the laning phase? Her poke is great, but above said squishiness led to a lot of deaths for me. I eventually got better with poke poke run, but not flat-lining is difficult with her sometimes.
  2. Runes/Mastery suggestions? Is semi tank the general way to go with her?
  3. Any weird or creative item suggestions? After the normal FQC/ SS/ Mobis I gravitated toward Righteous Glory, Mikael's and sometimes Hourglass if there were assassins.

Any input you have is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I love playing support Lulu! I can tell you how I play her:

  1. In the laning phase, focus on poking with your auto attacks and the occasional Q. In the ideal case, you get a very safe lane for your adc while you zone the enemy. But sometimes you can't take the risk of poking. Maybe the enemy duo is really strong early game, or your adc is weak early game, or you expect a gank coming, or you just messed up. Then there is plan B. Fall back, shield and protect your adc and try to survive. Going even in lane is perfectly fine, since Lulu outscales most supports in teamfighting. By playing a lot (and dieing a lot) you learn your limits and know when it is still safe to poke.

  2. I personally use 0/9/21 masteries. The higher masteries in the utility tree fit her really well. Lulu is slow, so the movement speed from wanderer helps you keep up with your team (especially when you W them). Bandit gives you a nice gold income from all those auto attacks in lane. The rest of the utility tree is also very strong for any support. For runes I use hybrid pen marks. Since Lulu auto attacks a lot, they are more efficient. They are luxury runes however, your setup is perfectly fine.

  3. Item suggestions: item 3504 Ardent Censer. Lulu is great at protecting a single ally and turning them into an absolute monster. If you know you can protect your adc this item will help a lot. item 3110 Frozen Heart. Strong against auto attack reliant teams. Lulu loves the CDR and the armor is welcome too. item 3089 Rabadon's Deathcap. I would build this over Zhonya's. She already counters assassins and as the support I want people to focus me. item 3023 Twin Shadows. The stats are useful and this item helps you find enemy ambushes and chasing them.

Lastly, i would like to suggest one more playstyle. You say you die a bit too often and you like building Righteous Glory. Maybe Ancient Coin is a good starting item to try? You sacrifice a bit of poke damage for more sustain and a safer laning phase. You also don't have to poke if it is not safe. Later in the game you upgrade it to a Talisman. That way you don't have to buy Righteous Glory and can buy something like a Mikael's sooner.

I hope that helps, and enjoy playing Lulu!

  1. One thing that's helpful is using her E on an enemy minion and then using that position to Q an enemy champion. Usually, enemy minions don't raise alarms with enemy champions immediately (unless they're good), so you can safely Q them while retreating to the bush.

Another important thing with Lulu is that her range on Q is pretty great, and it pierces through minions. Blast them with Q from afar and they shouldn't ever be in a position to poke you back. AA pokes require you wait for opportunities, like when they go to CS and are in their AA animation for the CS. Just poke them and run back. Mind enemy support. The bush is your friend.

  1. I'd not complete FQC that quickly. Get Sightstone first, then upgrade gold income only once and/or get boots, and then buy support items that help you/your allies survive instead of FQC. Locket of the Iron Solari gives Mresist to all nearby allies as well as health regen, packs a lot of health for you, and its active provides a strong shield for all nearby allies and yourself. Read: helps you die less. :D Yay! If enemy team has lots of CC, get Mikael's Crucible.

Frost Queen's Claim isn't terrible, but it gives you AP, CDR and a Slow active. As a support, you generally want something that helps your team a bit more.

For a semi-weird item choice, consider Ardent Censer. Movement speed, Mana Regen and AP, but its passive means every time you shield your ADC, they get a 6s +15% ASPD and +50 magic damage on-hit bonus. Doesn't help YOU survive, though, so consider carefully; also consider you only have a single-target shield, so your use out of it isn't as great as Sona or Alistar.

  1. Poking is still good, but your first priority is making sure your adc can farm well and you won't get completely trucked by their lane. The e q auto auto is good, Pix will do a lot of damage at level 3 and beyond. Once you hit 6 and you have decent vision, be more aggressive. all of your cc and utility will almost auto win a fight, just make sure you focus on one target with your adc.

Be cautious when poking if they have a blitz, naut or leona as they'll happily engage on you. If you're against one of these 3, warding the lane bushes will help, otherwise should you get engaged on, cc the adc and back off, or should your adc grow a pair, all in the adc.

  1. Granted her starting mana regen got buffed her spells are still expensive, but I run armor reds, yellows, 5 mr blues 4 flat mana regen, 1 mr quint and 2 mana regen quints. Gotta spam all the time.

A general 9/0/21 page is good. At your level I'd still invest heavily into the utility tree like 5/0/21.

  1. Start spellthiefs but switch to talisman as after it's buff it's much stronger. rush ss and work towards item 3158 . I don't like mobi boots cuz as soon as you take damage you're so sloooooooow. :| Double vroom vroom (item 3069 & item 3800 )helps with getting to their team or away from their team. item 3222 , while situational, still offers a solid amount of mana regen and a decent heal, Heck, it works for ignites and exhausts so use it when someone gets hit by those. If possible, save a inventory sport for pinks, unless it gets really late into the game.

I enjoy playing lulu, though not a main. Personally I would suggest maxing W if you know you can rely on your teammate.

I really do not have that much experience with her, so I'll leave it to others to help you out. Good luck though, and have a good day.

i didn't even read what the other guys say.

  1. with lulu you want take spell thief first, as well as whatever potions you feel necessary, ability wise you want your shield first. use it to help with the leash placing it on your jungle, in lane it works a bit different...

  2. One thing i laugh at other lulu players at is the fact I have keyboard shortcuts for " Self Shield " ( T ) and "Self SpeedUp" ( G ) you wouldn't think that these lil keyboard shortcuts would help as much as they do....

Basicly when I lane it isn't about the spells, I'm always trying to get mad cash by AAing enemies, they get pissed I press T and usually absorb the damage, when I get my Q next i use it every now and then, you can now use your E Q combo however its mana costly early on.

late game consists of you running around the map warding choke points, shielding your tanks and shooting from them a safe distance away, polymorphing dangerous targets like kat/velkoz and canceling their ults once started. as well as ulting your initiator.

I personally find her to be better as a top laner or mid laner than support. The reason being is that her poke is incredibly strong early game and she's still useful lategame. She also has one of the most versatile item builds in the game (I normally build her attack speed/AD top lane, but I do build her AP in some team comps). Her kit doesn't really have much synergy as a support with an ADC (minus the shield) as oppose to a solo laner where her ultimate, shield, and movement speed buff can help secure kills for your jungler.

That being said, Lulu has kind fallen off in the North American LCS due to the tank meta and it's completely rare to see her being played either top lane or mid lane (European still use her as support in LCS even though I find her supporting qualities to be meh). That being said, she's actually one of the most versatile champions in the game with diverse item builds she can get. You'd normally would see Lulu top or mid lane if you plan on running a "protect the ADC" siege comp.
