I don't know how good my advice is as I haven't played Lux mid seriously since season 3, but I can say that rushing zhonyas is pretty dangerous unless you get ahead. However I was a Lux main for a long time so I still think my advice can be helpful. My advice is,
too expensive to save for, but if you skimp and get the
you will do almost no damage for a long time. I'd only prioritize
if you can get the large rod first/early, otherwise it is more important to get at least 1-2 core items, such as
and
at the very least...
This is what I would suggest if you want to survive high damage/burst mids early. If it doesn't work for you, ask a mid main, but this has worked for me in the past.
Start#1) If worried about harass, start
if you want to TRADE rather than take free poke. With this build it is worth it to TRADE if you can get them out of lane. This only works because you will have more sustain than them, so if done correctly you can in theory force them to b or at least hug turret because you have more potions. Don't forget to utilize your shield and also your passive to reduce your damage taken and increase damage done to your opponent. You'd be surprised how easy you can poke someone down. Keep in mind you wont have a lot of early damage and kill potential will be lower. If you can kill, great, but your goal is only to outsustain and push them out of lane. Do not die or this is absolutely not worth.
Alternatively, you can also go
if you want try and to DODGE skillshots. Less risky if you can utilize mspd to dodge and stay in lane.
Start #2) If your opponent has easy to dodge poke pre-6 (Zed's q's aren't too hard, for example) I would advise to just start the standard
. At first back get
if possible. This isn't ALWAYS advisable but a mid with shield + barrier + 2-3x
is hard to burst down in one combo unless you're cc'd to death/ganked. Even then you can usually flash out of a bad situation.
Anyway this is becoming a novel, so here's some advice before I go:
-
Invest in a pink and ward near the river or your jungle entrance. Hug that side if you do not know where the enemy jungler is.
-
Do not spam/waste QW. A lot of good enemy midlaners/junglers will wait (or even try and bait) for you to waste your cc before they all-in you, plus if you use them too much you will be oom all the time and may as well be dead.
-
In addition to #2, learn to lane without blue buff. It is your jungler's discretion to give it to you. He does not have to. It is OK to shield to reduce damage taken to farm if you need to go closer, but you are ranged, so try to use it to your advantage.

Ping mia's and pay attention to mia's. Can't emphasize this enough. If enemy
has been MIA for a while, there is a good chance she is waiting to gank you. If enemy mid starts acting weird (more aggressive or stops pushing lane as hard, or even stands in obvious way of an easy Q) then it's a pretty clear indicator that he's trying to bait you.
Hope that helped.
