I've been wanting to improve with Yasuo, so any help is much appreciated.
What runes do you guys think are best with him?
Is maxing Q first always the best option?
Other general gameplay tips that are essential or aren't obvious when learning to play him?

Never max Q first, spec it first but you should always max E. Use your E to last hit minions whenever possible so you can maximize flow generation and keep the magic damage stacked. Try to EQ harass when you have your whirlwind ready, the knockup will give you time to escape back to safety before they can punish you for getting close to them. Once you hit 6, try to use the EQ knockup instead of the whirlwind as primary means for getting the knockup.Be very aware of ganks and don't overextend too much, and try to save your windwall for ganks. HP seals are best for midlane and don't be afraid to build a couple of tank items if you are dying too quickly in fights.
Mastery 5 with Yasuo but I don't consider myself good with him so take my advice for what you will.

Yasuo main here. Yasuo completely destroys all melee ap mids. Like fizz or ekko. Also skills shot a mids like ahri. Runes I use are all critical reds. So you don't have this weird critical Gap when you finish IE and shiv. Health seals against ap. Mr blues. And attack speed quints. The attack speed really helps your q so much. You can max either Q or E. Which ever you fancy. Also. Yasuo is very flexible with his builds. Runes. Etc. Life steal runes are also an option. Basically you fight in lane by dashing through minions. And auto q auto your enemy. Even E them if you want. Just make sure you don't hit their tower range. That kills you early. Usually people back away from you when you have your 3rd q up. So you may use that to zone them. You can also auto the enemy one time while he's in the air and you can ult him for more damage. So shiv should be the first thing you rush. If you want more utility get some attack speed from ruined king. Then finish IE if you want. Yasuo can also be built tank so you can tank and still do damage. Bloodthirsty is a good pick. Get last whisper for more pure damage. It's also cheap af. Anyway. Ask any questions if you like
