Morde is primarily intended to be an "ADC replacement" played along with, not as, a support.

His W gives him several things that push this plan.

  1. The passive on W means he gets full exp for killing a minion, even if an ally is nearby. (This shows to you as "critical" experience, if you have exp float text showing.) This bonus exp also applies if your support gets Relic Shield procs.
  2. The W active requires a nearby champion (or Morde ghost) to be cast and provides move speed to follow a diver in, sustain, and decent wave clear

The first is the more important part of making him the "ADC" instead of the support. If he is supporting, the passive will end up largely wasted. The second part is the biggest single reason (but not necessarily the only) he is now weaker in a solo lane.

When I have played Morde since the rework (not much yet), I prefer a heavy CC, initiating support, such as Blitzcrank, Leona, Nautilus, Thresh, Alistar. As usual, the support will drive the flow of the lane, and you need to be ready to follow up on any catches you get. The biggest weakness I have seen is a vulnerability to poke and less ability to whittle down turrets in a siege with a few AAs here and there that a traditional ADC has. This can, of course, be worked around with other picks on your team.

Morde's E is actually longer range than ranged AAs, so you can use that to your advantage in trades to start off with some shield. Speaking of shield, it is the key to trading in lane. If you can get good shield generation, you can negate the start of the trade damage.
