How much should junglers tax?

Just wondering what people think.

If I gank a lane and we kill the enemy laner, I always help my laner push out their lane and then back. If my laner dies really early before I could do anything or makes a bad play and has to back, I will usually cover the lane and get the free exp and gold under the tower, which doesn't really hurt the lane and benefits me.

If I fail a gank and the enemy doesn't have to back, I won't take minions at all and maybe clear some camps and try again. If I get them low and force flash/make them back and my enemy mid or something is oom or needs to back, I help them push it out to the tower so they can back safely and the enemy will miss exp and gold. The wave resets and will be pushing back towards our side then.

These are really the only time I take minions; I'm not really greedy when I jungle.

If you are going to tax when laners are gone at least push it to turret and not give the enemy laners 2 waves for free.

Ideally not at all in my opinion

However there are times when you should push the wave. Or just hold the wave. When your laner is not there.

Lets say your teammate laner died or recalled. If your allied minion wave is larger than the enemies it will slowly push out on its own causing your team to lose farm. If the enemy returns to lane first he can thin the wave and freeze it near tower which is bad because that causes your teammate to overextend to lane. Generally when your minion wave is stronger shove it into the tower before leaving.

If the enemy minion wave is bigger you can thin it out so it does not crash into the tower before your laner returns. Maybe he can then freeze it. Or maybe you can just kill all of it and leave and the lane will probably reset.

If the minions are about equal and neither laner is there you can probably just shove in the 1 wave into the enemy tower

If you gank their lane and they get the kill: take 2-3 minions (3 caster, or two melees, or just one cannon)

If you gank their lane and you get the kill: leave, you don't need to tax

If you gank their lane and burn the enemy's summoners: take 2-3 minions or so

If you gank their lane and they've been raging and flaming you all game even though the enemy jungler hasn't ganked their lane once and it's apparently your fault they lost lane despite your previous six ganks where you burned a flash and they had a chance to cs and catch up but instead they chose to towerdive with 10 hp and wonder why they died: about three or four waves. Switch to trailblazer just in case and smite the waves too.

Hey there! So any time when your jungler ganks and doesnt get a kill you should expect him to tax you because he is missing out on farm and xp from his jungle camps. you dont want to waste your teamates time if you are wanting to win. One misconception though is when a jungler is helping you shove a wave out so your enemy laner is out of lane he is taking your farm. When that happens he isnt taxing you so to speak, rather he is taxing their laner.

Best advice ever: Ask your team mate. That simple.

Had a jungle yesterday, I died to a 3v1 dive mid, but the lane wasn't pushed to the tower. Enemy mid laner / top / jg all backed. Instead of ganking bot or helping top push, our jg just came to mid and pushed my lane. So I was now behind on CS, lane was now pushed under enemy tower so I returned and couldn't farm effectively and he ignored me asking him to NOT push the lane.

Lets say im the jungler, i gank top lane and enemy top laner dies. if my top laner goes back after i might last hit until he gets back or push the lane specially if we have minions backed up. so the turret either goes or enemy loses exp and gold from turret killing minions. if u tax just last hit don't use an AoE and take everything lol.

Lets say I pull a gank off enemy dies and my laners are still healthy. Do I just take a minion or 2 and go?

Very, VERY situational topic.

  • If you just got off a successful gank (kill for the laner) then the jungler's job is to help push the wave in to pressure tower (unless the laner pings and wants to freeze lane), and should usually take no more than 2-3 CS, never a cannon minion.
  • If you as the jungler got the kill, help push the wave, but don't take the last hits. The enemy laner is only slightly behind your lane when the jungler gets the kill, and taking the lane's CS will negate the small advantage they just got.
  • If you fail the gank (enemy laner survives and backs, only burned flash), don't take any CS. Back off, ward around the lane, and look for a followup gank while farming nearby camps.
  • If you REALLY fail the gank (either you or your laner died (or both)) then you are either dead and can't take CS, or you just fed the enemy lane and need to just last hit while your laner is dead. Just hold the lane if the enemy is still there, and never try to push the wave into them, or else your laner, who is now behind because of your mistake, will get stuck in a lane freeze and be vulnerable to enemy ganks.
  • If your lane is already backing or dead, again just hold the lane so that you tower doesn't get pushed in. If possible, try to freeze near your tower for your lane to have an easier time farming when they return.
  • If neither lane is their, last hit, but try not to push unless your laner is already in the lead and you want to pressure a tower.
  • If lane phase has ended, just push lanes whenever you can and there is nobody else around, because it isn't taxing anymore.

EDIT: Basically, as the jungler, a failed gank is usually my fault, and instead of taking the laners CS and setting them back, I have camps that I should farm instead. If I succeed I either got the kill and don't need the tax or I got an assist and only deserve a couple minions. Additionally, if my lane has a tendency to take a lot of my camps, I will usually be more ready to tax their lane when I gank, unless they are someone like Karthus who needs a HUGE amount of farm.
