Help my top lane friend

my friends and I play 5v5 ranked almost every day. our top laner is a good friend who is bad like really bad. any tips on how to help him get better faster. we are happy if he dosent loose lane in the first five min we have our jungle help him but it just goes to waits because he still makes so many mistakes. we thought time would make him better but that seems to not be the case.

who does he play? maybe shift him to a tank, focus on farming and playing defensively. getting good takes time.

Convince him to play punisher type champions like Garen, who thrive on enemy mistakes but have some difficulty forcing plays. This, along with a bit of talk to get him to play more defensively, should help when he goes back to his current set of champions.
